MHGA Chapter 219 – A Miracle of Material Science!
"So, let me get this straight—
You listened to someone's pep talk, ran over here at this hour…
and tried to ask me out on a date?"
Inside Lucy's apartment, David and Lucy were both seated on the couch.
Lucy had one hand held out in front of David, letting him massage it.
The punch she'd landed on David's nose earlier hadn't hurt him at all—
Instead, she'd sprained her own hand.
"That's right."
David nodded as he spoke, glancing nervously around the room.
Lucy pulled her hand back, pressed a palm to her forehead, and let out a long sigh.
"What were you even thinking?"
She grabbed David by the collar.
"You don't even know what kind of person I am—
And you run in here saying you like me?
There's a limit to how reckless you can be."
"What the hell is going through your head…"
Lucy stared at him, clearly exasperated.
"I'm not some little girl from Arasaka Academy.
Don't think something like this is enough to ask me out."
"You're just some punk who got horny off my looks…"
She pinched David's cheeks.
"Boys like you should just settle down early,
before you end up dead."
"But I'm serious," David said, meeting her eyes.
"I'm not chasing you because of your looks—
Okay, I mean, you are really pretty, but that's not why—
Well, maybe a little bit."
His mouth was running like it had been rented out.
"But I mean it.
So I want you to give me a chance.
If you don't want to, you can just say no."
David's expression was firm.
"I'll prove myself to you."
"Then I refuse."
Lucy leaned back on the couch and waved him off.
"Anyone can say that kind of crap.
I think I've made myself pretty clear.
Now get lost."
"…Oh."
David stood up and started heading toward the door.
As she watched him rise, Lucy's expression showed a flicker of disappointment.
But she said nothing as David opened the door.
Just before stepping out, David turned back.
"I'm not giving up.
I'll keep chasing you—
Until you say yes!"
He clenched a fist.
"I'll prove myself!"
"You said I could reject you!!"
A couch cushion flew at him from Lucy's hand—
And David caught it with one hand.
"I never said I'd give up if I got rejected," he declared.
"Just wait, Lucy!
I'll make you fall for me!"
With that, he marched out the door in dramatic flair—
Then quietly peeked back in through a crack and returned the cushion to its place before closing the door again.
"Haaaahhhhh…"
Lucy let out a long sigh and stared absentmindedly at the room.
Finally, she muttered to herself—
"'I won't give up,' huh…?
Isn't that just plain old stalking?"
"Why'd he have to set his sights on me of all people…"
She got up and walked to the window, staring out at the neon-soaked cityscape of Night City.
Her hand drifted unconsciously to the back of her neck.
"He doesn't know anything…"
Her eyes fell.
"In a place like Night City…
how can someone this stupid even exist?"
"And he had to pick the worst possible job for himself, too…"
Her hand rested gently on the glass as she looked far into the distance.
Meanwhile, David was walking through the streets of Night City.
The surrounding lights were so bright they drowned out the stars.
Only the moon remained clearly visible in the sky.
"…"
David raised his hand toward the moon and gently closed it into a fist.
"I…
I really do want the people around me to live happily in this world."
"Lucy, wait for me," he whispered.
"I'll prove it to you."
"WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING BEHIND US?!?!"
Elsewhere in Night City, a car was barreling down the road like something terrifying was chasing it.
Behind it, the air echoed with intermittent BOOMs—
Cannon fire.
And it was getting closer.
Hearing the thunderous impacts grow louder, the gang members inside were pale with fear.
And then—
THUD!
A massive impact slammed down on the roof of their car.
"Shit!! It's here!!"
A mid-ranking thug shrieked.
"Shoot! SHOOT IT DEAD!!"
Panicked, everyone in the vehicle fired straight upward, trying to kill whatever had landed on the roof.
After the burst of gunfire, everything went silent.
Just when they thought it might be over—
A massive lance—like a cannon fused to a spear—pierced straight through the roof, embedding itself in the dashboard and wrecking the car's smart system.
"I got a message from Maine,"
came the voice from above.
Standing atop the torn-open car, David shook loose the bullets embedded in his shield.
"You guys are the last ones.
Hand over what you took!"
Minutes later, Maine's crew spotted David returning—
his massive weapon still slung over his back—
driving a newly-converted convertible.
In the back seat, the targets were tied up in a nice, orderly pile.
"Ha! David!
Hell yeah, man!"
Maine gave him a thumbs-up.
"Even under pressure, you managed to bring them back…
Good thing they didn't get far.
Would've been a real pain otherwise."
"Not bad!
Hey, promising rookie!"
Rebecca clapped David on the shoulder.
"Job's done. Wanna go grab a drink?"
"…"
Lucy stood with her arms crossed, watching from afar.
Then she looked away.
"No thanks," David shook his head.
"I'm gonna go work on my aim.
My marksmanship's still kinda trash…"
"That's weird.
What the hell kind of implants do you have?"
Pilar, the team's cyberware medic, approached with curiosity and peered David over.
"Never seen a setup like yours.
And that weapon—what is it?
Some new military tech?
It's got propulsion functions too…"
"Ahaha…"
David let out a sheepish laugh.
What was he supposed to say…?
Besides the basic implants every Night City resident had,
he only had the Sandevistan.
As for the weapon…
David scratched his nose awkwardly.
A Gunlance, to put it simply—
was a miracle of materials science.
A flying brick of pure power.
David muttered in his heart:
"Good ol' classical physics…
Can't beat it."
