MHGA Chapter 214 – Enraged Kirin
"Is Kirin really such a gluttonous species?"
Laios narrowed his eyes at the Kirin in the distance.
"I don't recall anything like that in the base records."
"Kirin aren't supposed to be heavy eaters."
Kairo Retsu hung halfway out the car window.
"There are even legends that Kirin can live off dew alone… If Kirin actually ate like this every day, someone would've noticed by now."
"Could it be some kind of abnormality?"
Naofumi Iwatani asked, concerned.
"Should we still continue?"
"We're already here. No way we're backing off now."
Kairo stared at the Kirin.
"But something's definitely off about this…
Even that incident where it attacked the power plant unprovoked was strange."
As Kairo kept talking while driving, Laios suddenly raised a theory.
"Guildmaster, something just occurred to me…"
He leaned forward.
"Could Kirin be starving because it ended up in this world?"
"Compared to the world it came from… this place is kind of… well…"
He glanced around at the bleak Badlands.
"Barren."
"Good point."
Kairo scratched his chin.
"So you're saying—"
"The Kirin was living peacefully in its lush, resource-rich homeland,
then suddenly got dumped in Night City, a place where not even birds take a dump…"
"Let's not even talk about nutritional value—there's not even a proper forest here…"
Kairo scratched his head.
"And going by what Kazuma said, when Kirin first appeared, the people of Night City just pulled out their guns and shot it without hesitation…"
"If that were me? Yeah no, I'd lose my temper too."
Kairo wore an expression of reluctant sympathy.
"Already starving, then some punks show up and start shooting you in the face—
Who wouldn't snap?"
Tanjiro listened to the whole scenario and visualized it in his mind.
He looked genuinely pained.
"Kirin… that's so pitiful."
"So do we really need to fight it?"
Naofumi asked.
"Can't we try reasoning with it?"
"…And how would we do that?"
Kairo looked straight at him.
"You think Kirin can understand what you're thinking?"
"That's not a hungry horse.
That's an Elder Dragon."
He pointed toward the clouds above.
"You see those thunderclouds?
They're all forming because of Kirin.
If someone angers it, lightning could drop from the sky at any moment."
"Even if we wanted to send Kirin back to its original habitat—
We'd first have to overpower it."
Kairo took his hand off the wheel for a moment, then stomped on the gas.
"Let's stick with our original plan.
We're here to gather intel."
He addressed the four Hunters in the vehicle:
"Grab your weapons. This one's gonna be rough."
By now, the vehicle had already entered Kirin's line of sight.
The Hunters had begun to feel tingling pain on their skin—
They were now within the range of Kirin's high-voltage field.
And Kirin, having heard the vehicle's engine, had stopped eating and turned its head in their direction.
"Guildmaster, it's seen us.
Are we still going in?"
Laios gave a warning while continuing to observe through binoculars.
But then he noticed—
Kirin had lowered its stance.
It was winding up to attack.
A veteran observer of beast behavior, Laios instantly knew what was coming.
"GUILDMASTER!!!
Kirin's about to strike!!"
"Hold tight! Unbuckle!
We're going in hard!!"
Kairo cursed and shifted gears—
Slamming the gas pedal to the floor.
The engine roared violently.
The car accelerated even faster.
But even then—
Kairo could feel the electric pricks across his skin growing stronger.
"Kairo-san! Turn left!!"
Tanjiro shouted and pushed Kairo's hand on the steering wheel to the left.
The sharp turn nearly flung the entire vehicle off course.
But Naofumi quickly deployed a Spirit Shield to stabilize their path.
And just as the car swerved—
A barrage of lightning bolts crashed down onto the road they'd just passed, utterly annihilating it.
"What the hell?!
We didn't even attack it!
Why's it going after us already?!"
Naofumi smashed open the half-jammed sunroof with a punch and stuck his upper body out.
His right hand slapped against the car roof, extending the Four Holy Shields onto the vehicle.
With his other hand, he pulled a folded Heavy Bowgun from his pack and mounted it on the car roof.
"Kairo! What now?!"
"No choice—we're doing this live!"
Kairo's hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, putting his driving skills to the test.
"Naofumi! Fire at will! I'll drive! Hit it with everything we've got!"
"Tanjiro! Focus on Kirin's movements!
Try to remember everything!
Maybe we can replicate its behavior back at base!"
"Laios—this is our second time seeing an Elder Dragon!
Don't disappoint me now!"
"Understood!!"
As soon as everyone received their roles—
The Kirin leapt from the hillside in one bound.
It charged the Hunters directly.
As it charged—
The thunderclouds above began to churn violently.
In the next instant, a massive bolt of lightning slammed into Kirin's back.
The beast's body crackled with immense electricity.
"WHAT THE HELL!?
What kind of grudge are we talking here?!
We just started and it's already gone full supercharged rage mode?!"
Kairo saw the whole thing through the rearview mirror and cursed loudly.
"Electric Thunder Pony my ass! This is cheating!!"
"OPEN FIRE!"
Naofumi locked on and pulled the trigger—
His Heavy Bowgun loaded with Wyvernheart Rounds—
Unleashing a barrage of shots toward the charging Kirin.
But all they saw—
Was a shower of sparks erupting as the rounds slammed against Kirin's hide.
