Kon stood in front of Luffy with a straw hat perched on his head with Goku on top of it.
Luffy pointed at Kon's hat, his eyes narrowing. "Huh? No, you can't have the One Piece. It's gonna be mine! And hey, why're you wearing a straw hat? You copying me?!"
Kon crossed his arms, tilting his head. "Why would I copy you? You're weird."
'This guy's got a straw hat too? Is he hiding some arrow mark too like me?' he thought, frowning. 'Mine's cooler, though.'
Luffy puffed out his cheeks. "No, you're weird!" The two glared at each other, sparks practically flying between them.
Zoro, still tied up, rolled his eyes. Coby, the nervous boy beside Luffy, adjusted his glasses, looking exasperated. The remaining Marines, clutching their rifles, shouted in unison, "You both are weird!!"
Kon and Luffy ignored them, their voices overlapping. "The One Piece is mine!" they declared, pointing at each other.
Coby stepped forward, raising his hands. "Um, Luffy, since you were planning to recruit him as your crewmate, why don't you both share the treasure when you find the One Piece?"
Kon and Luffy paused, their glares softening as they thought it over.
'Sharing sounds okay. Mom said sharing is caring and not to be too greedy,' Kon thought, scratching his chin.
'But I want the good stuff.' "I want all the sweets in the treasure," he said, crossing his arms.
Luffy nodded, his grin returning. "I want all the meat in the treasure."
They locked eyes, then said in unison, "Deal!"
Zoro, Coby, and the Marines stared, dumbfounded. 'Sweets and meat?' Zoro thought, shaking his head. 'They're after the greatest treasure in the world, and they're fighting over food?'
Coby blinked, adjusting his glasses again. 'These guys are nuts,' he thought. A Marine muttered, "They want sweets and meat from the most coveted treasure in the world?"
Kon's eyes lit up as a new thought hit him. "Wait, why do you get to be the captain?" he asked Luffy, pointing. 'If I'm captain, I'll be able to make more friends and travel wherever I want,' he thought, imagining himself leading a crew across the seas.
Luffy puffed out his chest. "Because I'm gonna be the Pirate King. Only the captain can be the Pirate King."
"But I wanna be the captain too!" Kon said, frowning. "I'll make tons of friends if I'm in charge."
'Captain Kon sounds awesome too,' he thought, grinning at the idea.
Coby, desperate to stop the argument, raised a hand. "The older one can be the captain," he suggested.
Luffy grinned. "I'm 17."
Kon's grin turned smug. "I'm 19."
'Got him!' he thought, leaning forward. "You should call me big brother, little brother."
Luffy's jaw dropped. "No way, I don't accept this!"
'I'm not calling him that!' he thought, crossing his arms.
Zoro, fed up, cut in. "Play rock, paper, scissors. Winner's the captain. And free me for the love of God!"
Kon and Luffy nodded, facing each other. Luffy raised a fist. "I'm gonna put rock. If you pick paper, you can be captain."
Kon blinked, confused but nodding.
'Sounds easy enough," he thought, raising his hand.
He chose paper, while Luffy threw scissors, his grin wide. The Marines, Coby, and Zoro watched, stunned, as Luffy laughed. "I lied! Welcome to my pirate crew. Call me captain. You're the vice-captain."
The Marines, Coby and Zoro thought shocked, 'He believed him just like that?!'
Kon's face fell, his shoulders slumping.
'He tricked me!' he thought, pouting. 'I wanted to be captain.' Goku patted his head, chattering softly to console him.
Luffy's eyes landed on Goku, widening. "Woah, a monkey with four arms and guns?! Cool!"
Kon perked up, grinning. "That's right, he's Goku, my best friend."
'Goku's the best,' he thought, ruffling the monkey's fur.
Luffy tilted his head. "He any good with those guns? He can be a crewmate too. Shanka crew also had a monkey on their crew. But he only had two arms, was a lot skinny and did not have guns. This one is much better."
Goku's eyes gleamed, and he unholstered both pistols, pointing them at Zoro's ropes—still loosely hanging from his wrists.
With a quick double shot, the bullets sliced through the remaining ropes, freeing Zoro completely. Zoro jumped back, panicking. "You stupid monkey, what're you doing?! I could have died!!"
Goku grinned, blowing air on his guns like a cowboy, then holstered them with a flourish.
'Show-off,' Kon thought, laughing. Luffy's eyes sparkled. "He's our sniper now! Now we have a Captain, Vice captain, Swordsman and Sniper. Just a few more people and then we will go find the One Piece."
Kon nodded, still a bit sulky about losing the captain spot. "That's good."
'Sniper's cool, but I'd be a better captain,' he thought, kicking the dirt.
Luffy clapped his hands. "Let's find a cook soon so we can have meat and sweets!" Kon's face lit up at that, his sadness forgotten.
'Sweets every day? This crew's gonna be awesome!' he thought, imagining piles of rice balls.
Luffy tilted his head. "By the way, what's your name?"
Kon paused, his hand on his straw hat.
'He's my captain now,' he thought.
'Old Man Iroh said only give my full name to people I trust. Luffy's weird, but he's got a good vibe and is my captain.'
"My name's Kon D. Ryūkami. It's nice to meet you Captain Monkey D. Luffy." he said, grinning.
