Chapter 3 - Nobara Kugisaki

Nobara Kugisaki isn't human

When she was young, Nobara was raised in a small mine, superstitious village, as a bright and curious young girl, it was no place for Nobara to grow up in.

"How did Jesus turn water into wine? It doesn't make sense, something can't just turn into something else."

WHACK!!

The nun's palm reached Nobara's face on her first day at a local Catholic middle school.

"It's not your place to understand God's ways. The human mind can never understand reality."

The other students laughed as tears welled up in her eyes and fell to the ground like stars falling to the Earth. The young girl runs out of the classroom to her house.

"Mama! The teacher hit me just because I asked a question."

Nobara seeks comfort in her mother's arms and is rejected.

"You disrespectful girl! I don't care what your teacher did. She probably did it because you disrespected her, but even if she was wrong, you have a responsibility to go to school whether it's good or bad."

The water falling on the ground grows stronger as Nobara is rejected by the one who's supposed to care for her.

Nobara becomes cold and detached after this, she avoids her family and the people in her village whenever possible.

When Nobara Kugisaki is 13 years old, she meets Saori, a girl staying in the village with her aunt on summer break from her college in Tokyo. Saori was everything Nobara wanted to be, mature, smart and beautiful, so Nobara befriends her despite being warned to stay away from the foreign girl.

"Why do I never see you in church?" Nobara questions with a curious look on her face.

"Well, I don't really believe in God." Saori replies. Tears well up in Nobara's eyes.

"You have to! If you don't, you'll go to Hell!"

Nobara exclaims. Saori hugs the young girl and strokes her hair.

"It's okay. If God really is good, He wouldn't send me to Hell just for not believeing in Him."

Nobara calms down slightly.

"Why don't you believe in God?"

Saori thinks for a moment before answering. "I don't believe in miracles. Everything is what it is, and can't magically become something else."

Nobara flinches briefly, remembering what happened when she said the same to a nun. Then, Nobara is silent.

One day, an altercation occurs, and a number of people in the village begin brutally beating Saori. She grabs people and tries to pull them off.

"Stop it! Stop it!"

A man backhanded her.

"You need to stay away from that girl. She's evil, humans have to obey God's orders."

Saori is near death when Nobara Kugisaki screams. She loses control and activates her Cursed Technique, Resonance. The technique immediately kills everyone in the mob. A strange creature becomes visible and evaporates. Nobara's body is unprepared for the exertion and she passes out.

Two years later.

Nobara wakes up in a hospital room, she sees a handsome man with messy white hair and a blindfold.

"You're finally awake."

The man says.

"Who are you?"

Nobara spits out.

"Gojo Satoru, I'm a Jujutsu sorcerer."

"Sorcerer?"

When Gojo explains the concept to Nobara, she's surprisingly calm.

"I see… so my 'Cursed Technique'… it puts pieces of my soul in who I'm fighting and hurts them…"

"Yep! Those people in your village were being controlled by a curse."

Nobara doesn't even think before replying.

"I want to be a sorcerer and hunt down those curses."

Gojo thinks for a moment before saying.

"Being a sorcerer is a hard job. A lot die, and the ones that live lose their humanity."

"I never want to be a human again. I'll use that technique until there's nothing left of my soul."

Months later

Megumi Fushiguro enters the school, a sorcerer he was told he'd be working with, Nobara Kugisaki, is waiting.

"You're late, Fushiguro."

"Let's just find that finger…"

Author's note:

I changed how Nobara's technique works, but in practice it's the same except for a few edge cases, the reason I changed it is because Nobara will encounter one of those edge cases soon.

Also, fun fact: I only watched JJK for the first time because I liked the Gojo edits on TikTok and a friend really wanted me to, so I was kind of half-paying attention and on my phone for the first part of season 1, when it was Nobara's backstory, I wasn't really paying attention, and when I saw the doll head, I thought Saori was brutally murdered. That's partially what inspired my version of her backstory.
