Chapter 20 - Six Feet of Silence

I walk up to the commanding knight, concealing my hair, slouched looking somber, crestfallen.

"And who are you? Do you know the deceased?" he asks, wiping his forehead with a handkerchief.

"Um, no, I've come to give my statement," quivering, tears forming, I clench onto my clothing.

"What? What do you mean by a witness statement?" he looks at me doubtfully.

I see Leon and James arriving from their investigation. They look horrified, pale complexion, perplexed at what they had seen. I point at Leon and tell him my story. Leon, seeing me talk to his commanding knight, rushes over, and explains everything.

"Do we even have to get her statement?" the commanding knight shrugs.

"I'm not following, what do you mean sir?" Leon asks, confused.

"I mean, we can clearly see the horror," the commanding knight says, not wanting to do any report.

What a great day to have a lard as a commanding knight.

"With all due respect sir, we have one survivor," Leon states firmly.

Shit.

Sweat forms on my forehead,

"Thank goodness! Someone survived!", voice shaking, "please let me see them!" I plead with tears.

Leon looks at me pitifully and the commanding knight sighs. He tells Leon to take me away as my crying is causing him a headache. Leon gently confronts me, patting my back, escorting me to the infirmary of the survivor.

I'm glad that sloth hasn't changed.

I tell Orphnaeus to wait near the stable outside the infirmary. Leon and I step inside the room, waiting for a healer to finish casting a healing spell.

"This should stabilize them for now, but the infections from the wounds…" the healer pauses, and shakes their head.

I glance over to Leon, he places his hands on hip and hangs his head.

"Right…" Leon looks over to me, "this might be your last chance to say goodbye," he says, almost in tears.

I fall to my knees, and clench onto my hood crying. Looking at the floorboard, I place my hands on the floor, trying my utmost best to hold my laughter. From Leon's point of view, I look like I've been dealt the worst hand in life.

"We'll give you some privacy," they step out of the room and close the door.

As soon as I hear them walk away after closing the door, I slowly rise to my feet. I take off my hood, slick my hair back, and walk over to the person lying on the bed.

How annoying, I sigh, wiping away my tears.

I pull the blanket to see who it is. Half of his body is gone. Both of his legs, his left arm, and the flesh on half of his face. All gone.

"Tsk," I click my tongue.

It's the beer bellied man who knew I was up to no good. I glance over and spot a metal chair in the room. I walk over to the chair and drag it across the floor. The friction of the chairs legs against the floor makes it screech.

Hearing the awful, high pitched noise, the man slowly begins to awake, groaning with his eyes closed. I sit next to his bed, and unsheath my dagger.

"Wakey wakey," I say in a low sweet malicious tone, tapping the blade of my dagger on his cheek.

He opens his eyes slowly, seeing me eye to eye. I see can the panic rise. His eyes widen, tears form, unable to speak he tries to shake his head. Tries to plead for his life.

Leaning back on the chair, I chuckle at his face. How fearful he looks.

"You don't look so tough now, do you?" I whisper.

A mere worm I can squash with my feet.

Watching him struggle makes me feel a sense of thrill. I want to see more. I wave my dagger around like I'm conducting an orchestra. Slowly I bring my dagger to his body, without touching him, I trace from head to his belly.

All he can hear is me humming a prayer as I was playing with his life. I tuck him in with the bedsheet, and get close to his ear and whisper,

"See you never."

I raise my dagger and with a force I plunge down toward his chest.

"Boo!"

I chuckle, stopping myself from killing him. His tension rises, he's gasping. Unable to breath, he chokes in his own saliva. He lets out a final gasp and goes still. I sheath my dagger away, and hold his hand.

"Help! Help! Please Help!" I scream.

I break into my award winning sob routine once more.

"Someone!" I yell again from the bottom of my stomach.

Leon slams the door open,

"What happened?"he's rushing toward me.

"He's not breathing, please save him please! I beg of you," I cry like never before.

Leon looks over to the man, sees he's dead, and makes me let go of him. Leon hugs me and tells me the man is gone.

"There was only a sliver of chance he would have survived. I'm sorry, it's time to say goodbye."

I continue to cry until my eyelids are red and inflamed. I sit in the corner of the room pretending to look dazed as I stare out of the window. The aids walk in to wrap the man in white cloth to bury him. Leon still with me,

"He must've meant a lot to you. But it's time to let him rest in peace now."

I nod, and get up slowly holding onto Leon's hand.

We walk to a cemetery, and watch him be lowered six feet underground. I stand watching his grave be filled with dirt.

Exactly like a worm.

I stand alone as everyone leaves. Just me and his grave now. I squat down and laugh.

"If only you knew your place, insect."

I stand tall and look to the sky. A sense of relief washes over me. I turn around and hum my way back to Orphnaeus waiting for me at the stable.

"It's time to leave, but before we get out of this town, we still have one more stop," I climb his back.

I take out my map, and write Potion Raven. The orb didn't appear. I click my tongue and decide to go there, led only by memory.
