Chapter 11 - Encounter

They weren't in the same stony hallways anymore. It was a large square room; while dark, a small light enabled them to see.

Seeing Ros, their Support, barely able to fight the Corrupted, Alex got up and took his position as the attacker.

Ros quickly stepped back as Alex rose forward, sword in hand.

What stood in front of Alex were multiple beasts—two snakes, large in size, moving quickly as they hissed loudly.

Then, there were about three other corrupted wolves. They held little resemblance to the ones Alex faced before.

These ones were especially wide, and their eyes glowed red. Drool leaked from their mouths, basically looking to kill.

Alex thought of using Form One, but this might have been only the beginning. He couldn't waste it since he was only able to use it once per day.

"Let's go!" Alex said loudly.

Ros raised his staff, which Alex hadn't seen him carry before. The staff had a peculiar look. There was a large crystal at the end, and its handle was fit enough for Ros to carry.

He summoned shards of ice as Alex charged toward the wolves to hold them back.

The shards made loud noises as they crashed into the wall, ground, and some reached closer to the wolves.

They scattered quickly, multiplying as soon as one was fired.

They were aimed to perfectly match Alex's fight. He reached up to one of the wolves as the shards of ice kept coming.

The wolf let out a roar before raising its large paw, attempting to slice Alex with its nails curved enough to cut somebody in half.

Alex instantly stepped out of the way, ducking to dodge the attack aimed for his torso.

He raised his sword and quickly sliced its large arm that hung over him. Hot blood sprayed across his cheek like a burning slap.

Alex closed his eyes as the wolf's blood dripped on his face, then quickly moved his head left and right to clear it, enabling him to see again.

He caught the wolf off guard as it was still obviously hurt by the attack. Quickly, Alex rose back to his feet and jumped at it.

He clutched his sword tightly before sticking it deep into its head, completely killing it.

Before he had the chance to take a breath, more of them jumped at him as they saw him kill one of their brethren.

The shards of ice stopped, as spikes of stone rose from the ground, large enough to blow a hole in a person's stomach.

With no hesitation, Alex jumped upwards as both wolves came at him from different directions.

He used a wind spell to propel himself forward, then used it again to land properly on his feet.

The wolves dodged the spikes of earth as the snakes basically climbed on them, hissing the entire time.

However, more spikes came out of the same places that tried to kill the beasts first.

It even shocked Alex, as one of the snakes had its head blown off, and one of the wolves stumbled downwards as it tried to dodge.

All that was left was one of the wolves and a snake.

He had to act quickly before the snake reached him.

Alex furrowed his brows and faced the wolf again.

This time, he let fire engulf his sword—to make them feel even greater pain, and to help him do this quicker.

Ros kept trying to use the same spell, as shards of ice and spikes of earth kept rising from the ground.

Alex charged as his sword was on fire.

The wolf was directly in front of him. This time he raised his sword to quickly end its life before the other one got back on its feet.

The wolf stepped back quickly as it jumped to a nearby spike, catching Alex off guard.

It jumped even quicker to a different spike, and as each time it jumped to a different one, more spikes came out.

The wolf got quicker with its moves before Alex finally couldn't follow it anymore.

Having no idea where it would come from, the spikes increasing, and the slightly dark room, Alex gritted his teeth as he clutched his sword tightly.

Then finally, the wolf jumped at him. He barely noticed it.

Flames erupted as his blade carved the air—straight into the wolf's path.

A large slash of flame erupted from his sword, slashing directly at the wolf charging toward him, cutting it in half.

Alex took a quick look at it and noticed its injured leg. His eyes widened in realization.

"A distraction!" Ros shouted from afar.

Alex quickly turned, but he was too late. The other wolf that kept jumping around the spikes finally charged downwards at him.

He was completely distracted and fell for their trap.

The wolf roared as it got closer. Its large, curved nails cut him. Alex felt his back burning from the slash, as his cape and clothes were both slashed too.

Thanks to reinforcing his body with mana, it didn't slice deep enough to make it a fatal injury. But the pain was still there.

He shouted in agony as he felt his whole body trembling.

The Corrupted Viper, waiting for the best opportunity, finally came out and hissed at him. He was on the ground and completely defenseless.

Ros, who was in the distance, caught sight of him and tried to reinforce him by using another earth spell.

Before Ros had the chance to do that, the viper already reached Alex, biting him hard on the leg. Alex felt the poisonous venom leak into his body as he couldn't even stretch a muscle anymore.

An icy burn spread from the bite, pain lacing through his veins like fire in his blood.

The beast kept its teeth on Alex's leg before three arrows—one normal and two made out of a wind spell—were fired directly into its head, killing it completely.

It didn't stop the poison from leaking into his body, though.

Then, the wolf was about to charge at Alex once more, before he gritted his teeth through the pain and quickly raised his sword to stab it.

The wolf stumbled as it saw Alex raising his sword again, as it jumped without thinking he'd be able to do even that.

He engulfed his sword in flames once more before releasing another slash of fire, screaming in pain as he did it.

The slash of blaze moved instantly toward the wolf's head, cutting it off from its large mouth—but not through its whole body as this slash wasn't as strong as the one Alex had used earlier.

It left a disturbing sight in front of him, but more disturbingly was the state of his body.

His body kept burning in pain; the venomous poison was quickly spreading throughout his blood. His legs trembled as he fell down, unable to hold his ground.

He heard the sound of steps coming directly toward him.

It was Ros and Lara, Alex saw as he lay on the ground, on the brink of death.

Lara instantly got on her knees as she prepared for a high-level healing spell. She was chanting something, but Alex couldn't hear properly. He could barely even see her.

Ros did the same, which slightly surprised Alex, but he remembered Ros was a support, so he had to know healing to some level.

Alex let out a slight smile as he noticed both of them were healing him, feeling reassured even when his whole body was trembling in pain and agony.

He felt his consciousness fading, perhaps due to the poison, but he had to accept it.

If this was how he died, he would have no complaints at all.
