Chapter 1 - The Young Orphan

Chapter 1

In a remote town, far from any major city, a boy grew up whose life had never been kind to him. Edward – that was his name – lived in a Christian orphanage. His parents had died in an accident, and what remained was a cold home full of unfamiliar faces called brothers and sisters.

Edward was different. Something dark seethed within him, something he himself didn't understand – a mix of anger, loneliness, and the feeling that the world was against him. The other children avoided him, especially after rumors about his lies spread. He claimed to have famous parents. No one believed him – on the contrary, they mocked him, insulted him, wrote his name on the walls.

Eventually, he lost his patience. What began as a threat ended in violence. A boy who had exposed him was cruelly punished – so much so that the priest had to intervene. But instead of remorse, Edward only showed a smile. When the priest hit him, he just laughed: "Is that all you can do? I'm disappointed."

Edward was sent to his room. But that night, a plan formed in his mind – a dark, silent resolve. "They punished me. Now it's my turn."

He observed the priest – followed him unnoticed to his dwelling and there discovered what others had never seen or wanted to see: The man who adorned himself with divine morality was an abuser, a molester, a monster in the guise of religion. Edward no longer saw himself as a victim – but as a judge.

Two nights later, when the house was empty, Edward broke in. But things took a different turn. Instead of the priest, a nun entered. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And Edward, long since having crossed the threshold of conscience, was not deterred.

The priest, who came home later, found only blood – and Edward was already waiting. What followed was a brutal, wordless descent into revenge. When the man finally lay in the forest, injured, unable to flee, Edward looked down at him – a child who was no longer a child.

The next day, the orphanage was silent. No one suspected anything – or did they? A nun, who had observed the events from the shadows, remained silent. She knew of the priest's guilt. Perhaps she felt satisfaction. Perhaps guilt.

When the police arrived, Edward was ready. Unsure if he was suspected, he played his role perfectly. Only later, when a nun entered his room, did he know: She had seen him. And yet she said nothing.

"I'm grateful to you," she said softly. "What you did was wrong – but... you ended what no one dared to."

Her name was Risa Warenheit. From that day on, she stood by his side – as a guardian, perhaps also as an accomplice.

Shortly after, the orphanage was closed. Too many dark secrets, too many open wounds. Risa took Edward's hand.

"A new beginning," she said.

"If you accept me as I am," Edward replied, "then I'll come with you."

On the train that carried them away, she asked him, "How did you know what you had to do – so precisely, so calculated?"

Edward smiled fleetingly. "I tested it on animals."

Risa was silent, shocked – but she didn't let go of his hand.

Here's the English translation of the text:

Now, as young Edward and the nun Risa sat on the train, both wondered: "What's next? Which orphanage would take them in... especially with the rumors that would now follow them due to recent events!" They traveled by train past Düsseldorf to Berlin. "Can you speak Polish?" Edward asked hopefully, wondering if she could, so they could leave Germany. "No, I'm terribly sorry, I can't." Risa was sad that she couldn't help Edward. "You know, I'll try for you, or at least try." She said it with confidence. Unfortunately, she said it aloud, and Edward stared at her in disbelief. "You're welcome to try that!" he said with mixed feelings, hoping she could be his angel in disguise. She was shocked when he replied. "Did I say that out loud?!" Risa was embarrassed. Edward smiled briefly; even though it was quick, it was the first time he had smiled. It felt strange, and he thought: "What was that feeling inside me?" Edward was so lost in thought that Risa said his name several times: "Edward, Edward, are you there? I asked you something." Risa was curious. Edward flinched: "No, sorry, I was thinking too much and thought... you know what, never mind, what did you want?"

Risa sighed: "Ahh, Edward, what am I going to do with you?" She shook her head.

"I said we'll arrive in 10 minutes." Risa looked at Edward with a penetrating gaze. He felt uncomfortable and looked away. "Yes, I know." A quick but terse answer, so quiet she barely heard it.

After 10 minutes, they arrived at Berlin train station. They went outside and looked for a way to find an orphanage. Both passed a police station, and Risa spoke to a police officer who showed them the way to several orphanages.

Risa was welcomed everywhere, but Edward was rejected several times. It was due to his rude and mean attitude. He sighed: "Of course, that was obvious." After some time, Risa came back and smiled at Edward. Edward was confused; he couldn't understand why she came back to him, she had an orphanage and still came back to him. "Explain to me, Risa, why did you come back to me? They want you more than me..." Risa gave him a warm look. "I told you we would travel together and find an orphanage together." This was unexpected for him; no one had ever done that for him. What was this feeling he felt inside? Edward couldn't understand it. He touched his chest, and his emotions grew slightly warmer. "THANK YOU!" he said so quickly that Risa had difficulty understanding it. But she didn't want to dwell on it. They searched for another orphanage and found a place that had seen better days. There was a nun, but no priest. Edward's eyes sparkled, knowing that no priest meant no one would stop him from his experiments. "I hope they take us!" Edward went inside. "Hello, is anyone here?" The nun approached him. "Yes, I'm here, the head of this place. How can I help you, young man?" The nun looked at him with a warm smile and a welcoming demeanor.

Risa was skeptical about this place but accepted it. If Edward liked this orphanage, she would stay too.

After careful consideration, the nun was skeptical after reading the news and everything about them. Edward's face began to darken, his eyes became hollow and murderous; he wanted to stand up, but Risa placed her hand on his shoulder and shook her head. "She didn't do anything wrong, Edward," Risa whispered to Edward. He sat back down and crossed his arms. Risa took over and spoke with the nun, who finally accepted them, even if she didn't quite like it.

Edward got his own room on the 1st floor. He opened a window and looked out at nighttime Berlin. "What a sight, all I see are buildings. What did I expect?" He said with sarcasm.

Risa was directly below him. She opened her bags and stored her things in her new room; her persuasive skills were so good that even the nun couldn't refuse. They were relieved to have finally found a place.
