Chapter 2 - 2. Avery (8 year old)

Today was my birthday. I rushed downstairs, hoping my mom would be there to pick me up into her arms like the birthdays before. I opened the door handle just to see my presents standing on a table with a note on it. I couldn't help it but I found it disappointing. I walked to the table and looked at the note. "I'm out today and tonight, honey. I'm busy at work." I knew it wasn't true. She never worked on Fridays; she was always there for me, but not today. I looked at my presents, but suddenly I didn't feel like it anymore. I tried to make things cozy. I got some chips from the cupboard and lay down on our couch, watching my favorite movie. It always cheered me up. The doorbell rang, and I looked up. I stumbled to the door and opened it. I was shocked when I saw him. He was dressed in black pants, a white shirt, and a black jacket. "What are you doing here?" I asked. He couldn't possibly know where I lived.

"You didn't know that I was coming?" He asked as he looked up and down over me. "No."

"Well, I'm your neighbor, and your mom invited me," he said. He wasn't my neighbor, was he? "Are you going to let me in or not?" he said. I opened the door wider for him, and he walked in. He takes his shoes off and walks in. He plopped down in the spot where I'd just been sitting. "What are you watching?" he asked. "I was sitting there," I said. "You can join me if you want." He smirked and looked back at the television. I sat beside him, but with a good distance between us. He picked up my hand and looked at me. "Do you want to be my friend?" he asked. "Okay," I stammered. "Are you coming to school too?" I asked. "Yes," he replied. That's how I recognized his name. He was on my class list. "Would you like to sit with me, or otherwise I'll be alone?" I asked. "I'll be with you the whole time," he said. I turned on the movie. I laughed, and he looked at me with admiration. I looked at him, and we stared at each other for a few seconds before I looked away. I held the pillow in front of my head because I was turning red, but he tried to take it away. He smiled at me, and I gave a big one back. I got up to get food and climbed into the stair cupboard to get food. I picked up some brownies and gave him some and popped some in my mouth, too. "Catch," he said as he threw a little piece of brownie. I opened my mouth, and he went directly into my mouth. I laughed and threw one back. It went into his mouth. "One point," he yelled, and I threw another hard on his face, but he managed to get it into his mouth. "You know I'm pretty good at this." I threw another one this time he missed it, and it fell right onto his face. I laughed, and he was red. We played the whole time till he noticed the presents on the table. "You still haven't opened your presents. Do you want to open it now?" "Yesss, " I scream from excitement. "I picked out a large green present and ripped off the paper. It was a skippy ball. We opened very much until there was one left. I opened a black tapered present. It was small. There was a necklace inside with a heart. It was gold. He picks it up and places it around my neck. I flinched when his fingers touched my neck. "Done," he said, and I walked to the bathroom to look at it. It was beautiful. I looked towards the door, and he leaned against it. His eyes shone even brighter than before. "It's beautiful, isn't it?"

"Everything's beautiful on you," he said, and it made butterflies in my stomach. I heard the doorbell ring, and I stormed past him. I opened the door to find my mother standing there. She had mascara under her eyes like she's been crying. "Hi, Mamma," I said excitedly. She looks at me and gives me a big hug. "What's wrong?" I asked "Nothing sweetheart" I ran back to Isaac just to bump into him again. "Second time darling" he smirked and I pushed him aside. I lay on the couch. "See you've found each other. Have you opened your presents already? Have you seen Isaac present already?" Isaacs present? Was that necklace from him? He stood in the hallway looking at the paintings on the wall but I saw his face turn bright red. When he finally turned around the colour had faded. "Thank you," I say as I hug him. I felt him stiffen as I held him. "You're welcome," he said. I couldn't place what he smelled like but it was good. I pulled away and looked at him. He was looking at the window behind me. My mamma walked into the room. "Do you guys want to get some food?" she asks us "Yes please" I smile at her. We got some food and I sat beside Isaac. He ate slowly and I hurried him up because I wanted to get ice cream. He only smiled. We got ice cream. I got strawberry and mango. He got chocolate and lemon." Can I taste yours" I asked him. He nodded and I licked his ice cream. He stared at me, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Stop looking at me," I said. "I'm trying, okay?" I began eating my own. "Do you want some of mine?" he shook his head. After we got home, he went straight home. I went upstairs to my room. I grabbed my hairbrush and was about to comb my hair when I saw a pair of green eyes right outside my window. Oh no! His room is next to mine. When he realized I saw him, he quickly blushed and left. I packed my bags because tomorrow was the first day of school and I wasn't alone.
