Chapter 10 - 10.The shadow's secret

The ancient whisper, "It remembers," echoed in Valerius Ren's mind, a chilling counterpoint to the faint, dark hum of the Shadow Orb in his grasp. The power surging through him was undeniable, a raw, primal energy that resonated with the deepest parts of his former self. This was no mere rock; it was a fragment of his past, a piece of the Abyssal Heart, and it carried a consciousness, however faint, tied to a realm beyond mortal comprehension.

Outside the cave, the sounds of battle intensified. Lord Alaric's shouts, the clang of steel, and the snarling of the Spirit Wolf filled the air. Ren couldn't afford to linger. He needed to secure the Orb and ensure its true nature remained hidden.

He quickly assessed the situation. The Spirit Wolf, while a challenge for his father and the guards, was not an insurmountable threat. He could leave them to it. His priority was the Orb. Its dark glow was almost imperceptible in the cave's gloom, but he knew its presence could eventually be detected by more sensitive cultivators.

With a thought, Kaelen channeled a minuscule amount of qi, infused with the Orb's nascent shadow energy, into his hand. He pressed his palm against the Orb, not to absorb it, but to cloak it. The swirling patterns on the stone seemed to ripple, and the faint dark light dimmed, becoming utterly invisible to the naked eye, even his own. It was a basic application of the Shadow Orb's power, a simple illusion of concealment.

Satisfied, he tucked the now-invisible Orb into a hidden pocket sewn into the lining of his robes, a precaution he had taken years ago for just such an unexpected discovery. He then turned, moving silently back towards the cave entrance.

As he emerged, the Spirit Wolf lay sprawled on the ground, twitching. Lord Alaric, his face streaked with sweat and grime, stood over it, his sword plunged into its flank. The two guards were nursing minor wounds, their breathing ragged.

"Ren! Are you alright?" Alaric exclaimed, his eyes wide with relief as he saw his son. "What were you doing in there? It was dangerous!"

Ren walked calmly towards the fallen beast. "I heard the commotion, Father. I wanted to see." He knelt beside the wolf, feigning curiosity. "It's a large one."

"Indeed," Alaric said, wiping blood from his sword. "A Low-Tier Spirit Beast. Its core will fetch a good price. And you, my boy, were remarkably brave, if foolish, to venture in there." He ruffled Ren's hair, a rare gesture of paternal pride.

"I found something else, Father," Ren said, reaching into his pocket and subtly deactivating the Orb's concealment. He pulled out the now faintly glowing, spherical stone. "It was in the back of the cave, where the wolf was nesting. It feels... warm."

Alaric's eyes widened as he took the Orb. Its faint, dark luminescence was unusual, unlike any common ore or spirit stone he had ever seen. He felt a subtle, almost imperceptible pull of energy from it, a strange, ancient sensation that he couldn't quite place.

"What is this?" Alaric murmured, turning the Orb over in his hands. "It's not a spirit stone... but it certainly holds some kind of energy. Perhaps a unique ore? This could be valuable, Ren! A discovery for the Valerius family!" His voice held a renewed excitement, the kind that had been absent for years.

Ren merely smiled innocently. "I thought it was unusual, Father."

The journey back to the manor was filled with speculation about the 'unique ore.' Lord Alaric believed it might be a sign of a hidden spiritual vein, a potential boon for the family. He ordered the cave to be sealed and guarded, and sent a messenger to the family's most trusted, albeit aging, alchemist to examine the stone.

Ren allowed them their theories. The alchemist, he knew, would be able to detect the spiritual energy within the Orb, but its true nature, its connection to the Abyssal Heart and the Upper Realm, would remain a profound mystery to him. This was perfect. The Orb would be 'secured' within the manor, close to him, while its true purpose remained hidden.

That night, in the privacy of his hidden chamber, Ren retrieved the Shadow Orb. He held it, feeling the familiar hum of its power, and the faint, unsettling whisper of its ancient consciousness.

"It remembers," he repeated the words, his voice a low murmur in the darkness. "What do you remember, little Orb? Do you remember the Abyssal Heart? Do you remember me? Or do you remember something else entirely?"

He focused his spiritual perception on the Orb, delving deeper than before. The Orb pulsed, and images, fragmented and fleeting, flickered through his mind: vast, swirling darkness, ancient runes, a sense of immense pressure, and then... a glimpse of a towering, shadowy figure, not quite himself, but undeniably linked. It was a figure wreathed in power, standing before a colossal, pulsating heart of pure void energy.

The vision vanished as quickly as it came, leaving Ren with a cold certainty. The Shadow Orb was more than just a treasure; it was a fragment of a greater whole, a piece of the Abyssal Heart itself, imbued with a sliver of its ancient will. And that will, however faint, seemed to possess a memory of the Realm, and perhaps, of the Demonic Sovereign who had plundered it.

This changed everything. His reincarnation was not just a desperate escape; it was somehow intertwined with these treasures. Was the Void Heart the only thing that had brought him here, or had the Abyssal Heart itself played a role, scattering its essence across realms, perhaps even guiding him to these fragments? The thought sent a jolt of both fear and profound curiosity through him. If the Orb remembered, could it guide him to other lost treasures? Could it reveal secrets about his own past, about the true nature of the Abyssal Heart, that even he, the Demonic Sovereign, had not fully comprehended?

The path to vengeance was no longer a simple linear climb. It was a winding, shadowed road, filled with ancient echoes and forgotten powers. And at its heart, the Shadow Orb pulsed, a silent, enigmatic guide, hinting at a destiny far grander, and far more perilous, than mere revenge. What other forgotten truths lay buried, waiting for the Demonic Sovereign to unearth them? And what would happen when those truths finally came to light?
