Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: A Trip to Europe

David, Mia, and Sarah had planned the European trip for weeks. It was supposed to be a getaway—something to help Sarah heal from her breakup with Michael. David and Mia thought that a change of scenery might lift her spirits. The excitement of traveling abroad and the promise of new adventures had even managed to put a smile back on Sarah's face. But no one could have anticipated the tragedy that was about to unfold.

The three of them landed in Paris, their first stop on the trip. The city's charm seemed to work its magic right away. The streets were lined with cafés, and the Eiffel Tower stood proudly in the distance. Mia, ever the lively one, pulled Sarah along as they wandered through the bustling streets.

"Come on, Sarah, you can't stay sad in a place like this," Mia teased, giving her a playful nudge. "Paris is for falling in love again—even if it's just with the croissants!"

Sarah smiled, shaking her head. "I'm not sure croissants can heal a broken heart, Mia. But I'll give it a try."

David laughed, his arm slung casually around Mia's shoulders. "You know what they say—when in Paris, do as the Parisians do. And that means eating until you can't think about anything else."

The lighthearted banter continued as they explored the city, visited the Louvre, and even took a boat ride on the Seine. For a moment, Sarah felt a flicker of happiness returning, thanks to her friends.

But everything changed when they arrived in the Swiss Alps. It was the third leg of their trip, and they had planned a day of hiking in the mountains. The air was crisp, the views breathtaking, and the world felt open and full of possibilities.

"This place is unreal!" Mia exclaimed, gazing out over the snow-capped peaks. "I feel like I'm in a postcard."

"Yeah, it's stunning," Sarah agreed, feeling a sense of calm she hadn't experienced in months.

David smiled at them both, glad to see Sarah finally letting go, even if just for a moment. "Come on, let's get to the top before sunset. We'll take the best pictures."

The trail wasn't easy, but Mia led the way, her enthusiasm carrying them forward. They laughed, snapped photos, and marveled at the beauty around them. But as they reached a narrow, rocky path, things took a turn for the worse.

Mia was walking ahead, her usual energy propelling her forward. "I'll race you both to the top!" she called over her shoulder, her voice light with excitement.

David shouted after her, "Be careful, Mia! It's slippery up there!"

But before he could finish, Mia's foot slipped on the loose rocks. It happened so fast—one second, she was there, and the next, she was tumbling down the side of the mountain.

"MIA!" Sarah screamed, frozen in place as she watched in horror.

David bolted forward, his heart pounding in his chest. He reached the edge, but it was too late. Mia had fallen too far.

"No, no, no!" David's voice cracked, his hands gripping the rocky edge, desperate to find her. But she was gone.

Sarah ran to his side, her breath shaky. "David, what do we do? Oh my God, what do we do?"

David could not speak. His entire world had just shattered.

They called for help, but deep down, they both knew there was nothing anyone could do. Mia was gone, and with her, the lightness that had filled their days.

In the days that followed, the trip became a blur of grief. They had traveled to heal Sarah's heart, but now they were left trying to piece together their own. David was a shell of the person he had been. He barely spoke, his eyes hollow, his hands shaking whenever he thought of Mia's laugh, her energy, the way she had brightened every room.

Sarah, too, was numb. She had thought losing Michael was the worst pain she could feel, but nothing compared to this. Mia had been her best friend, her confidante, and now she was gone, leaving a hole that felt impossible to fill.

One night, Sarah sat beside David in their hotel room. The silence was thick, and neither of them knew what to say.

"She loved you, you know," Sarah said quietly, breaking the silence. "She always said how lucky she felt to have you."

David did not respond for a long time. When he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse. "I should've been able to save her. I should've been faster."

"You can't think like that," Sarah whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "It wasn't your fault, David."

But nothing she said could ease the weight of his guilt. And nothing could bring Mia back.

As they prepared to leave Europe, the trip that was supposed to be a healing journey had instead become a reminder of how fragile life could be. David and Sarah returned home changed, forever marked by the loss of someone they both loved.

But through the grief, a silent understanding formed between them. They would carry Mia's memory with them always, and in time, they would learn how to live with the loss. But for now, they could only hold on to each other and try to find a way through the darkness.

The trip had changed everything.
