Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 Kael Past

The bear regained consciousness, hurried forward, took Ivan off Kael's back, and found a chair for Ivan to sit on.

The four of them sat around a dining table, drinking the soup the bear had cooked. Tonight's only meal was this fish soup but fortunately, there was plenty of it.

Kael ate with appetite. It was the first time since time‑travel that he had eaten a hot meal.

When they were in God Valley, they didn't even have the strength to fish or make a fire so they could only harvest wild fruit as provisions.

However, the three Behro (Berro) didn't touch their chopsticks for a long time. They contented themselves by watching Kael theatrically devour big bites of fish.

After finishing a large bowl of dark fish soup, Kael smacked his lips, looked at the three of them, and praised:

"Why aren't you eating? It really tastes so good!"

Berro asked hesitantly,

"Brother Kael, do you remember what happened today? There was some electrical current in your body. Is that your Devil Fruit ability?"

Ginny nodded vigorously, held her hands out, and pointed,

"Yes, yes it even made your eyes flush red. It was so frightening!"

Ivan didn't say anything. His large, copper‑bell-like eyes gazed at Kael with curiosity. Clearly, he was also wondering what had happened to Kael.

Kael wasn't ready to explain everything to the three of them, and whispered:

"Because I remembered something. Didn't you hear what the man told me before we left?"

At that time, Berro was the next most conscious after Kael. Berro said:

"Do you remember? That person said your surname was Figarland. Does that name mean anything to you?"

"Of course it reminds me of so much…"

As Kael spoke of this, he suddenly paused. He looked into the bear's eyes and quietly said:

"Bear, if I were a descendant of the Celestial Dragons, would you hate me?"

"Nani!?" (x2)

The moment the words left his mouth, Ginny and Ivan jumped from their chairs, staring at Kael in disbelief.

Compared to their reactions, Berro was much calmer. He bowed his head and said nothing. No one knew what he was thinking.

Kael didn't speak he simply stared silently at the bear.

An eerie silence filled the church hall, and finally Ginny could bear it no longer. She forced a smile and started to laugh:

"Are you joking? Brother Kael, how could you possibly be a descendant of the Celestial Dragons? We escaped from God Valley together!"

Ginny didn't want to accept this truth from deep in her heart but looking at Kael's serious expression, she realized it was most likely true.

Kael glanced at Ginny and softly said:

"How could I joke about something like that? I truly am a Celestial Dragon. Otherwise, why would the leader of the God Knights, Shanks, rescue a slave from Charlotte Linlin?"

"Is this Shanks... your father...?"

"My uncle."

Ginny's eyes filled with tears. She ran to Kael's side and held his hands tightly, as if afraid of losing him.

She murmured in disbelief:

"No, that must be a coincidence. Yes, if that were true, why would they allow you to live in God Valley?"

Kael raised his hand and gently stroked Ginny's dull pink hair, then in an extremely calm tone began to explain his previous experiences.

He had merged the remaining soul of his original body with the memories of that body thus re‑experiencing its pain.

He was born in the Holy Land, Mariejois, as the son of St. Figarland Gulando, the eldest son of the Figarland family.

Gulando's younger brother, Shanks, became the leader of the God Knights. The God Knights are the elite force protecting the Celestial Dragons. Each generation's leader is inherited by a member of the Figarland family.

Of course, such an important role isn't given to a family merely by name.

The reason it's always held by a Figarland is their extraordinary talent.

Their abilities rival not Celestial Dragons, but the best specialists outside.

We can see this in Shanks. His performance in God Valley was truly outstanding. He confronted Charlotte Linlin, Newgate, and finally Rocks and showed no sign of weakening.

This generation of the Figarland family gave life to two brothers: Shanks and Gulando.

The elder brother Gulando was actually very talented, but he was weaker compared to the younger brother Shanks. He lost to Sharks in every contest and eventually lost the leadership of the God Knights.

This became a permanent thorn in Gulando's heart.

However, his strength seemed more intellectual scientifically speaking, Shanks was ten miles ahead.

There are many talented races in this world, and Gulando focused on this. He chose the Fur Tribe and the Lunaria Tribe at last.

He aimed to incorporate those two gene lines through experimental means to become stronger!

But he feared death more than anything. As an adult whose body was nearly fully developed, using genetic modification would have only limited effect.

Just when he began to despair, a child named Kael was born.

The Figarland family placed great importance on their grandchildren's physical ability, and had special equipment to measure it. Kael's stats were strong in every dimension indeed, stronger than the family's first leader.

Gulando, that cold-blooded man, became fixated on his own nephew.

Kael's body was almost perfect for Gulando and there was blood relation!

In this world, there are many ways to change bodies, such as the Op-Op Fruit. Gulando, as a Celestial Dragon, certainly knew this.

He intended to apply his theories and genetic modification experiments to Kael. He wanted a body akin to a god's!

So Gulando collaborated with Vegapunk to conduct inhumane genetic experiments on young Kael.

However strong Kael's physical ability might be, he was still a child. Prolonged experiments caused his body to collapse and the experiment to fail.

When Gulando saw Kael whom he thought to be "dead" on the operating table he felt not the slightest sorrow in his heart, only madness and violence.

"Waste! WASTE!!!"

Mentally deranged, Gulando actually hated Kael. He hated him for ruining his dream.

He then ordered his men to throw Kael's "body" onto a slave ship and transport it along with the ship to God Valley…
