Chapter 8 - Suicide Exam: Part 1

No time to waste. I began sprinting back, away from the Errors, into the mysterious forest. 'I'm going to have to find a way to kill all 50 of them.'

Soon, I became surrounded by leaves and branches. The screeching of the Errors sounded far more distant now. Almost, no longer distinguishable. 'I should come up with a plan to take them all out. Maybe I can get a better idea if I get a look at them from above. From the trees.'

"Time technique: Creation"

A grappling gun dropped into my hand—the hook, sharp and deadly, while the handle, comfortable leather. I ran back near the hoard of Errors, not too far, nor too close. Just enough for me to get a good look at them. I aimed the grappling gun upward, and then I pressed the trigger down hard.

The hook shot out with a loud bang, cutting through the air, and then embedded itself into a wooden branch, high up in the leaves. I clicked the pulley button and soared through the air, flailing around as branches smacked into my face. "If my face isn't as flat as Voldemort by the end of this shit, then that's crazy," I muttered to myself before getting hit again.

The branch that the hook is embedded into came into view. I brace myself for impact. My chest collided with the branch as I smashed into it. I heard a snap, 'Fingers crossed I didn't just break the branch—'

I pulled myself up, my hands doing their best to find a hold on the top of the branch. My chest, face and arms throbbed in pain.

By now, I bet the Errors have already been alerted. I found some grip, then began pulling myself onto the branch.

The branch was quite large. So large enough that two people could sit on it if they did! I looked down at the group of Errors. They were fighting each other over the carcass of the Error that attacked me first. A good distraction, it was! 'Now I just need to find a way to kill the 49 other Errors.'

Thanks to the training I received beforehand, I had more energy, which meant I could easily withstand the side effects of using the creating ability, especially since my mind power was far stronger than before; however, Azura hadn't responded to me since the first day of that "training". It was quite worrying, especially since I had numerous questions that needed answers.

'First, though, I'll need to figure out how to identify their ranks. God, couldn't Draco teach me how to identify an Error's rank—Oh wait, he did tell me something about detecting Error ranks before.'

'He said it requires a lot of practice and a lot of concentration. He said it's referred to as "Distortion Sense"; it's an innate ability that all ability users have; they just have to train it to turn it on and off.' I wasn't even sure if it would work—'It allows us to detect Errors from a maximum of five kilometres. It's also used to detect "Presence". Presence is what helps define the rank of an Error.

Although I haven't ever used Distortion Sense before. So I might just have to start practising quickly if I want to deal with the mob asap. Wait… How do I learn the skill?!

Shit. I'm done for.' Draco seriously should've taught me a little more before he sent me into this pit of doom.

I mean, I could try closing my eyes and focusing on everything else, although that's cringe… Welp, I got to do it if I want to survive this shitty training.

I closed my eyes, surrounded by utter darkness.

I zeroed in on the sounds around me, the rustling of the leaves and the screeching of the Errors.

I concentrated on the sound of the Errors.

They were below me, scratching at the bark of the tree. It seemed my grappling gun made too much noise. Then all of a sudden, I heard a click within my head. Like something turned on. I burst open my eyes. Now my surroundings are covered by dark blue. The only things coloured were the RGB Error lights at the bottom of the tree.

"Good day, child, it has been a while. You've accessed 'Distortion Sense', interesting."

"This is anything but a 'Good day'. What took you so long? Were you sleeping while I was running for my life?!"

Azura ignored my remark:

"Now, if you wish to, I can explain how to define the Errors' ranks."

"Is that even a question?!" I said, aloud by accident.

"Alright. Here we go: Hollow ranks have a grey Presence, Scavengers with blue, Aberrants with orange. Wraiths with red and finally Nightmares with purple. That's all there is to it. Now, based on their Presence, you will have to plan out an attack."

I looked down on the Errors, thoroughly this time. Not missing out on any of them and their Presences.

'Twenty Aberrants, which all look like killer worms. Four Scavengers are shaped like a cross-breed of a stingray and crab. Along with Twenty-five Hollows that all look like giant blood-sucking insects (also known as Mosquitoes, I hate them). Finally, one Wraith, which is the only one that's still hiding behind the curtain of leaves and bushes, though it looks like a giant Ant.'

I guess Azura wasn't wrong about the "higher intelligence".

'I should deal with the minority first; they'll get in the way when I fight the Wraith.'

"Time technique: Creation" My grappling gun disappears as it's replaced with my deathly blade, Ignis.

I leapt down from the tree branch. Plunging. My hand gripped Ignis's handle as tightly as possible as the blade glowed fiery-red and orange.

Ignis anchored itself into the skull of a Scavenger. "One down, forty-eight more to go," I announced as blood sprayed out of the head of the Scavenger, onto my clothes and face.

The Errors spread out. I dashed to the Scanvengers and killed the remaining three Scavengers with ease. Then came the challenge of the Hollows. Even though they were extremely weak, they had been a lot in number. If I lost my concentration for even a second. I could have died from the needles protruding from the blood sacs of those giant insect-like vampires.

I ran into the group. Impaling each of them with Ignis. "Twenty-one", I said as Ignis sliced those insects in half. "Eighteen". "Nine". "Zero".

'Now it's time to slay the rest of the wretches.' I spat, sprinting around to the closest Aberrant. Facing its back.

As I hit the body of the killer-worm, the blade cut through the skin. Almost as if I was cutting butter.

I jerked Ignis out of the skin. The body immediately regenerated itself. Not leaving any sign that a blade had cut it right there.

'It seems like this is going to be a tough one. Ignis can't do the job this time. I'm going to have to think of something. And fast.'
