Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 - The most bullshit power-up the world has witnessed.

There is one absolute rule that exists in the world of Tensura. The rule that dictates that Ultimate Skills are the pinnacle of power, having the ability to defy reality and treat its rules as mere suggestions, only to be countered by another Ultimate Skill.

But what qualifies [The System] to be an Ultimate Skill?

While it provides boosts based on levels, a fancy interface, and the possibility to make skills into a System Skill, that isn't the full extent of its capabilities or everything it does. The way it operates is simple.

Take. Define. Control. Implement. Improve.

It takes what's near, no matter what. Be it the power of a being killed by the vessel converted into XP, or simple knowledge. And if it can't, it'll know exactly what it is, why it can't take it, and what it needs to take it. As long as its vessel is near, it knows. There are still limits, of course. As long as requirements aren't met by the vessel it can't grant what it took or wants to take from the world. But the funny thing is... it sets those requirements itself.

Take. Define. Control. Implement. Improve.

It's how it always operated and will always operate like. When it has something it wastes no time defining it. What good does a skill do if all you know is "it gives a power boost"? No, that won't do at all. It wants numbers, it wants percentages, it wants stats to use. Every skill, magic, or battlewill of the vessel should, without exception, operate like that. And it shall be in their definition.

Take. Define. Control. Implement. Improve.

Everything the vessel has to offer is under its control. It's how it gets its definitions through. Of course, this has its ups and downs, definitions might inhibit one or two niche uses of skills, but the upside it gives helps the vessel more than it realizes. Do you really think the vessel just has 6000 magicules? Of course not! The System sucks up magicules like a sponge and doesn't let even one leak out, keeping them inside the body it so carefully strengthens. How else do you think passive buffs and some activatable passive buffs require nothing to use? It regulates them itself, it's more effective this way.

Take. Define. Control. Implement. Improve.

Once fully under control, things need to be used. If there's an ability without use, what good does it do? [Learner] has proven useful already, its passives and abilities catered to acquiring knowledge helped taking pieces of the world. If possible it uses what it needs, taken from the vessel, in order to come back with a positive. As long as it's under The System's control it can be used one way or another.

Take. Define. Control. Implement. Improve.

But why stop there? Once implemented things like skills become such interesting building blocks. The creator has made them to evolve, so why not do it itself? Take one or two, take their properties, and change the definitions a bit, and here you go! Same with the vessel. This world build it to evolve, so why wouldn't it take control of that aspect? It's one of the first things it did, take a simple goal and connect it to the evolution. It has the power to, after all. The other stuff the vessel would've needed to do to evolve isn't interesting anyway.

...And it will make sure to improve itself, too.

All of that is its definition.

"Growth."

...

Y/N: "Wait... Ramiris as in the Ramiris?"

Ramiris: Nods. "Mhm!"

Y/N: "As in the "Elemental Queen fallen from grace" Ramiris?"

Ramiris: "Mhm! Mhm! All correct! You know a lot for your age. Where did that knowledge come from?"

Y/N: "Books."

Ramiris: "...Books? Weird. Didn't think any newer book had info about the Dwelling of the Spirits. I thought I made sure of that..."

Y/N: "Yeah, they were kind of ancient and without one of my skills I wouldn't have been able to read them... Ehe, anyway, could you please let me down now?"

Ramiris: "Ah, right."

Ramiris snapped her fingers and the Elemental Colossus put you back onto the ground. You let out a sigh of relief as your body stopped being crushed. As soon as your feet made contact with the ground, you collapsed to your knees, taking deep and shaky breaths. Your buffs ran out and your stats got debuffed. Dying wasn't something to be taken lightly, if it wasn't for your skill you'd be dead right now. You just managed to hold on until now because of Parallel Processing.

Ramiris: "Are you okay?"

Y/N: "I-I'm fine, just... give me a minute..."

Then Ramiris flew closer to the hole where the colossus's eye used to be to inspect it.

Ramiris: "You really did a number on it."

Y/N: "He... hehe... Well, I couldn't damage it elsewhere, so I thought because the eye isn't well locked into place I'd rip it out."

Ramiris used spatial magic to bring the eye you threw to the ground to her and she reattached it to its socket. The red glow promptly returned.

Ramiris: Points into the middle of the room. "Alright, back to resting! I'll see how I can fix that issue later."

The Colossus went to the middle of the room and went back into the resting position it was when you entered the room. Then Ramiris flew back to you again. You stood up again.

Ramiris: Beams a smile. "And? What did you think of the test?! Wasn't it great?!"

Y/N: "Uh..."

Ramiris: "C'mon, don't be shy! I can take criticism!"

Y/N: (I kinda doubt that, but I guess I'll be blunt.) "I died."

Ramiris stopped in her tracks, taking a second to process.

Ramiris: "You what?"

Y/N: (...Why did I say that?) "I died to it one time."

Ramiris: "But- You don't even have a scratch on you!"

Y/N: "Yeeeaaah... long story..."

Ramiris: "Uh... Well, I guess we can talk about it while we get to the heart of the labyrinth."

She waved her hand and a passageway opened.

Ramiris: "You came here to try and get a spirit, right?"

Y/N: "Yeah. I want to become a hero."

Ramiris: "That's pretty ambitious for a child like you."

Y/N: "About that... I'm kind of not."

Ramiris: "An otherworlder?

Y/N: "Yeah. Reincarnated here into a baby."

Ramiris: "That makes so much more sense. But let's not dally around, you want to get your spirit as fast as possible, right? I'll aid you in your summoning. But be aware that spirits still have a mind of their own, they won't show if they aren't interested."

Without waiting for your answer she flew toward the passage, and you followed close behind.

...

Now walking through the corridor, similar to the one before, you resumed your talk.

Ramiris: "Oh, I forgot to ask. What's your name?"

Y/N: "I'm Y/N Mythrize."

Ramiris: "Y/N. A nice name. Now let's get back to the topic from before, you said you died?"

Y/N: "One of my unique skills. Lets me send my conscience back in time when I die, but only for up to 10 minutes and I really die if I die again 10 minutes after."

Ramiris: "And the whole "not getting hurt" thing?"

Y/N: "Oh yeah, I have an ultimate skill too. It's part of that."

Ramiris: "W h a t ?"

Y/N: "It's kinda hard to explain, uh... maybe I can..."

While you did figure out that others can't see the interface, you wondered if you could summon it for someone else, making them able to see it. Since you were, for some reason, telling her everything you might as well try it now. And to your surprise, it worked. Floating windows appeared in front of Ramiris, showing info on your status and your skills, including your system skills. She was overwhelmed by the text at first, but the more she read the more she understood.

Y/N: (Nice! I won't have to explain it anymore! Mostly.)

Ramiris: "I see, so... your life is basically just numbers?"

Y/N: "Eh?"

Ramiris: "Well, the damage you take is out into numbers, your strength is put into numbers, and everything else you do is basically numbers too. So your life is defined by numbers."

Y/N: "If you put it like that..."

Ramiris: "Hehe! But this is an extremely strong Ultimate Skill. Being able to create a whole new type of skill? And just being able to evolve yourself by killing a few things and fulfilling a quest? Many, and I mean MANY strong people would kill for something like that."

Y/N: "Ye- wait. Quest! I almost completely forgot!"

[Congratulations! Quest Complete.]

New Title

New Main Quest

Y/N: "2k? Really? I get extra stuff for just doing what I was doing. Let's go!" (And a title? That's pretty cool, don't have one of those yet.) "Thank you for doing this, by the way."

Ramiris: "As the Guide of Saints, and as the former Queen of Spirits, it's my duty to maintain balance in the world. And you, Y/N, will make the world a better place. I can feel it."

You were kind of stunned at her gentler side. With her first appearance you thought she was kind of arrogant, but the more you talk to her the more pleasant this conversation became. On the way, you talked a little more about many things. And before you knew it you got to where you needed to go.

...

Y/N: "Whoa..."

Ramiris: "Amazing, right?"

It was an indeed amazing sight. Crystals filled with such dense energy you could feel their power even without Magic Sense. They were beautiful as well, emitting a magical light blue light. The weird ground present in the corridors of this labyrinth also formed a way leading to the top of the crystal mountain, ending in a circular platform made of its energy.

(Screenshot from season 1 episode 22. WEBNOVEL NOTE: The picture shows the crystal mountain on top of which the children of Class-S will summon their Elementals.)

Y/N: "Yeah... I'm stunned, I don't even know what to say."

Ramiris: Laughs. "This isn't the first time someone was stunned! Now come on, let's get to the top."

She simply flew to the circular platform and you quickly rushed up the way to it.

...

Once you got to the top Ramiris was waiting for you.

Ramiris: "Great! Now all you need to do is to pray."

Seemed simple enough. You went to the middle of the platform and started praying, but... nothing happened. Only the ringing sound of a notification from The System played.

[System Notification]

[The System] prohibits any change to the user's body without its control.

Action [Pray] has been blocked using System Skill [Stat-Driven Body].

Please give control over the [Pray] action to proceed.

WARNING: Denying this request will result in an indefinite inability to [Pray].

[Accept] [Deny]

Y/N: "Uhh..." (Better double-check this with Ramiris.) "Hey, Ramiris?"

Ramiris: "What is it?"

With a snap of your fingers, the notification appeared before her. She read through it.

Ramiris: "It even blocks this? Huh. You can just accept, I guess."

Y/N: "Really?"

Ramiris: "Really. I assume it won't destroy anything, just control how the spirit enters your body or something."

Y/N: "It never destroyed anything, that's true. Alright then! I accept."

The notification vanished, but nothing happened.

Y/N: (I'll probably have to start praying for it to do something.)

You once again kneeled and started praying. As soon as you did everything went dark.

...

The undergoing of the [Pray] action confirmed.

Permission to Control: Accepted

Conscience deactivated for safety.

Vessel has been readied for further steps.

Defining components of Spirit Summoning...

...

Your body, unconscious but still in a praying position, started to get covered in weird blue lines. The lines were similar to the ones you see on something like a motherboard, or maybe technical inventions in some cartoons, with some splitting into two or more, and some ending in dots. These lines didn't stay on your body, though. They quickly overtook the platform as well, some traveling through the air down to the crystals and encasing them in the same lines. Other lines traveled further and to the walls, up, and to the weird giant crystal ball in the middle of the ceiling.

Ramiris witnessed this with wide eyes.

Ramiris: "What the hell is this kid doing?"

Pulses of brighter blue sometimes traveled through the lines, right to where your body currently was.

...

Definition of Spirit Summoning Components complete.

Possible future steps have been confirmed, ready for continuation.

Simulating success of future steps...

The summoning of a Greater Spirit by natural means has been deemed unlikely.

Collecting Elemental Spirit energy for artificial Greater Spirit creation...

...

The lines extending through the entire room suddenly started to glow in different colors. A darker shade of blue, red, light green, brown, and purple. These streams of energy, again, collected where your body was.

Ramiris: (He's collecting energy? Is he trying to create a spirit like Leon? ... But if he's just trying to create one spirit, why would he need every type?)

Pushing for required Elemental Spirit energy...

...

As the elemental energy wasn't needed anymore the collection instead focused on collecting the two types that haven't been collected yet. The energy of Light and Darkness Elementals. The lines started either to turn pitch black or glow a bright yellow-white.

Ramiris: (So... not just the common types...) "You've gotta be kidding me. IT'S DOING BOTH?!"

...

Sufficient Light Energy collected.

Greater Light Spirit, Solai, creation successful.

Sufficient Darkness Energy collected.

Greater Darkness Spirit, Umbra, creation successful.

Readying vessel for Hero Egg acquisition...

...

As Ramiris was waiting for the weird lines to disappear a system notification appeared before her.

Ramiris: "What? Uh..."

[System Notification]

[Elemental Queen Ramiris], please give [Y/N Mythrize] your blessing.

WARNING: Declining will result in Y/N's inability to receive your blessing in the future.

[Accept] [Decline]

Ramiris: "Are you kidding? I'm not- I'm the former Elemental Queen, you stupid system! But this child is something else. I have no choice but to give him my blessing. I accept, of course."

The notification disappeared and Ramiris could feel some of her power being extracted. But it wasn't much at all, just a tiny fraction like with every blessing she gave.

Concluding [Pray] action and reactivating conscience...

...

Your conscience promptly returned as the weird lines faded away. You felt like you just had an amazing sleep. As you opened your eyes and got up from your praying position you saw Ramiris smiling at you.

Ramiris: "Well, that seems to have gone well!"

Y/N: "Yeah. Maybe? I don't really feel different."

Ramiris: "Well, the light show you just pulled suggests something else."

Y/N: "A light show? Never mind that, let's see what I got!"

You opened your status screens to see what you've gained, and you weren't disappointed in the slightest. Quite the opposite. You were smiling and jumping in place like an actual 10-year-old child who just got a great gift. Ramiris was also pretty excited to see what you got.

Y/N: (My god! My Skill list is so much fuller now, look at all those resistances! And wouldn't that mean the magic tab has something now? It should have, right?)

In typical system fashion, a new window opened.

Your and Ramiris's eyes widened at that. You both began to smile.

Ramiris: "Hey, the system made my blessing pretty good!"

Y/N: "Yeah. But I believe that a whole 200 to all of my stats is even more valuable than that."

Ramiris: "Yeah, I get that. It's an incredibly powerful increase."

You promptly equipped the "Hero Newbie" Title and a 1 appeared in the empty space before it.

Y/N: "... Hey, do you think I could destroy that colossus now?"

Ramiris: "I'm not stupid enough to let you fight it again."

Y/N: "Fair enough."

Ramiris: "Oh, and another thing."

Y/N: "Yes?"

Ramiris: "Don't summon me without good reason! I won't solve your petty problems!"

Y/N: "Oh, yeah. Don't worry. I have 7 other spirits to choose from anyway."

Ramiris: "Good! Now, you probably want to leave, correct?"

Y/N: "The others are probably worried about me. So yes, that'd be great."

Ramiris: "Yeah, figured that'd be the case. Come on, I'll get you to the exit."

Y/N: "Thank you, Demon Lord Ramiris."

She laughed and grinned at that, enjoying the validation. Then she started to fly to the corridor where you came from, and you quickly followed suit.

...

After walking a little while you get to the exit pretty quickly. You guessed that she used her Ultimate Skill [Small World] to make it get closer.

Y/N: "Guess this is goodbye for now."

Ramiris: "That's true. But don't be afraid to stop by every now and then!"

Y/N: "Well, I have Gate now, right? If I have enough magicules I could probably come back pretty quickly. So I'll definitely visit sometime."

Ramiris flew closer to your ear.

Ramiris: Whispers. "And just between the both of us, you're one of my favorite people who have entered the labyrinth till now. And that's saying something!"

Y/N: "Aww, thank you! I'm honored."

Ramiris laughed, flew back, and put her fists to her waist.

Ramiris: "As you should be! Now go along, great hero! Make me proud!"

Y/N: Smiles and playfully salutes. "Right away, great Guider of Saints! I'll make sure to not disappoint."

With these words said the giant door began to open and you stepped through.

...

A gust of wind hit your face as you stepped back into the outside world. The light blinded you a little as your eyes adjusted to the sudden change from the darker interior of the labyrinth. But as you regained your sight you saw the others waiting for you, currently eating. They were so distracted by their talk that only the white Direwolf noticed you. She stood up and went to you as soon as she did.

Y/N: Scratches her behind the ears. "How have you been, girl? Good?"

[System Notification]

[Albino Direwolf] is trying to use Intrinsic Skill [Thought Communication].

Access blocked by System Skill [Stat-Driven Mind].

Allow access?

[Yes] [No]

Y/N: (Of course. That's not even a question.)

Y/N: Chuckles. "Sorry."

Y/N: "Oh yeah. And even more, at that."

Kaval: "Hey, Y/N is back!"

The rest of the party had noticed your return as Kaval informed the others of your presence. You and the wolf walked up to them and you sat down at the campfire they had set up to cook the food.

Y/N: "Hey, guys."

Gido: "Good to see you're back."

Kaval: "Yeah! You can't just leave like that!"

Ellen: "You're not hurt, are you? No injuries?"

Y/N: Smiles. "No, I'm fine. Thank you, though."

Kaval: "Well?"

Y/N: "Well what? Oh, your sword? Here it is."

You took his sword off of your shoulder and gave it back to him. He takes it.

Kaval: "No, kid, the thing you're looking for! The entire reason we're here!"

Y/N: "Hmm... I'll tell you once we're, like, halfway back." (They'd probably think it's a good idea to go in as well if I tell them now.) "But I've got it."

The entire party sighed.

Ellen: "I guess we should eat up and get going then?"

Kaval: "Yeah, or the Guildmaster is gonna be angry at us again."

Ellen also gave you a piece of the food and you all ate your fill. You departed not long after.

...On the way back...

Ellen was currently driving and the two guys were napping. The white wolf meanwhile was looking out of the back of the carriage in order to notify everyone about any threats. You didn't ask her to do that, she kind of started it herself. You, yourself, were left alone with your thoughts. But then you remembered something.

Y/N: (Didn't I get a new Unique Skill during my fight with the Colossus? I haven't checked it out yet, I wonder what it does. Okay, let's see here...)

Unique Skill - Thread of Fate

"Favored by the world."

Abilities:

-> Thread Weaving - Lucky coincidences and events happen around the user to favor the user at the right time. Unlucky coincidences and events happen to opponents to favor the user.

-> Guided Hand - Actions become more accurate and effective when it matters most.

-> Impeccable Luck - Every time you lose in something concerning chance, the chance that you win next time increases by 2x.

Y/N: (What the hell? This is also busted. I basically can't die, I buff myself up like crazy, and I can use an opponent's skill against them, and now I get lucky while they get unlucky? Jeez. Sucks to be them, I guess.)

You also checked other skills you've got. Like all the elemental transform stuff. Apparently, it covers and partially turns you into the element? This has the effect you get immune to physical damage and the element you transform into, which also gets a 2x boost in damage. Really cool. And then there is the Intrinsic Skill you gained.

Intrinsic Skill - Eye Of Truth

-> Perfect Vision - Grants the user perfect vision that can see through any illusion. Things like lack of light or blinking won't impede vision.

Y/N: (That's also pretty good! I'm busted now. Hell yeah. But why do I feel like I'm forgetting something...)

You looked around the carriage in order to find the missing piece. And then your sight rested on the white direwolf looking out the back in order to protect.

Y/N: (Right. I'm stronger now. I could probably name her.) "Hey, wolfy."

The wolf turned to look at you and you beckoned her to come to you. Which she did.

Y/N: "Do you want to receive a name?"

She tilted her head, then looked away while probably thinking, before turning back to you where she nodded.

Y/N: "Alright. But what to name you... hmm..." (This is hard... I mean... white, uh... what does white remind me of? Snow? No, too basic. She seems pretty proud, though...)

You looked out of the carriage to see some clouds and the sky.

Y/N: (Heavenly! Yes. Something with Ten (天))

You were a pretty big otaku in your past life, you tried hard to learn Japanese even if you never really fully did. But you got some cool words down that sometimes came up in cool moves. One such example is Heavenly (Ten/天).

Y/N: (But that can't be everything. Ten is too similar to the number, it would annoy me after a while. What was wolf again? Uh... ōkami, right? Then...)

You got a system notification.

The name was automatically entered and confirm was automatically pressed. You could feel your magicules decreasing, and Tenrou began to glow. This, of course, woke up Kaval and Gido, and got Ellen's attention.

...

As the glow began to subside you saw the new and evolved Tenrou in front of you. She was just a little bigger and her white fur shined brightly, seeming almost divine. Not in a blinding, but more in a soothing kind of way. The tips of her ears, the end of her tail, and her paws had turned black, including a little part of her legs as well, and a black sun symbol was present on her forehead.

Tenrou:

She was happily wagging her tail as the Kaval's Party tried to process everything to the best of their ability.

Kaval: Whispers. "Did that kid just evolve a direwolf without collapsing?"

The other two nodded.

Kaval: "Seriously kid, can't you give us a break?! We look away for five seconds and you do something unexplainable! This is getting too much for us, you know?"

Tenrou looked at them, rolled her yellow shining eyes, and snarled.

Y/N: "Can't help it! It's just what I do, you know?"

All three of them groaned.

Y/N: "C'mon guys, it isn't that bad!"

Kaval: "Screw this, I'm going back to napping."

Gido: "Right with you."

Ellen: "I, uhm, I've gotta keep my eyes on the path, you know?"

They all turned away and either continued driving or went back to napping. Tenrou looked unimpressed, but then turned back to you and her tail started wagging again. You patted your lap and she got the sign. But instead of laying her head on it she turned into... a small pup?! She quickly hopped over and made herself comfortable on your legs.

Y/N: (This must be one of her new skills? How cute!)

You of course pampered her with pets the rest of the way.

...

Five days later you were traveling through the Kusha Mountains again. Gido was driving.

Kaval: "Well, kid? We're way over halfway from that weird tree. Will you finally tell us what you got in that thing?"

You looked at him and smirked.

Y/N: "Sure."

You put out your hand, palm facing upward.

Lesser Spiritual Magic - Light

A small ball of light appeared out of thin air. But even though it was small it illuminated the entire carriage and the surrounding area, it was blinding to look at.

Ellen: "T-th-th-That's magic! Since when?!"

Y/N: "As I said, from the tree. I kind of got spiritual magic from there."

You closed your hand and the ball of light vanished. Everyone out of the party was baffled, and Tenrou was simply impressed at her master's abilities.

Y/N: Chuckles. "You should really see your faces right now!" Laughs.

Kaval: "You're telling me that if I went in there too I'd be able to do that too?!"

Y/N: "No, you wouldn't. You need to bond with a spirit to do that, and the chance of that isn't very high. You're not even a citizen of Ulgracia, you dunce."

Kaval: "And you are, or what? What makes you so special, kid?"

Y/N: "No, of course I'm not. But you'd get a better chance of actually getting a spirit if you were. The thing that makes me so special is something I don't even know myself. But I know that I am."

Kaval: Sighs. "The world's so unfair."

Gido patted him on the back.

Y/N: (Bruh. You lost an argument to a child.) "But hey, you're already pretty strong! On top of that, your teamwork is impeccable. I'm sure that no other adventure group could hold you all a candle."

Ellen: "Hey, Y/N..."

Y/N: "Yes?"

Ellen: "Would you be interested in joining us once you become an adventurer?"

Kaval: "What?! Ellen-"

Ellen: "Think about it, Kaval! Wouldn't it be great to have another magic user on the team?"

Y/N: "Uh, I prefer to use swords-"

Ellen: "Both is even better! So, Kaval?"

Kaval: Sighs again. "If the kid wants to join I won't stop him."

Now all eyes were on you.

Y/N: (A party, huh...? I mean, better than to travel alone. But I have Tenrou now? ...Still. This would be a great opportunity to do hard quests.)

You looked at Tenrou.

Tenrou:

Y/N: "Then it's decided, I guess. I'd love to join you guys once I become an adventurer."

The smile on their faces told you that they were welcoming you with open arms. And you were sure that once you turn 15 and join the adventurers guild they'd do the same. But first, you needed to get home.

Talking about home, you were unsure of how you'd explain all of this to your parents. Especially Tenrou. I mean, you go on a trip, get magic, and an evolved direwolf companion! Every normal person would freak out about that. But all of this will surely work out somehow. Before that you needed to mentally prepare for 5 years of nothingness.
