Chapter 4 - James Team

As Kai ran for his life, his lungs burning and legs aching from the relentless sprint, he suddenly met up with some people who were running toward his direction, their faces set with determination amid the chaos. When he saw them, he screamed, "Run!" his voice hoarse with terror, but these people did not listen. Instead, they called out for him to stop, their tones urgent and commanding, but Kai just ran past them, panic blinding him to anything but escape.

One of them, a tall dark-skinned handsome guy with a commanding presence that exuded quiet authority, just sighed deeply, rubbing his temple in frustration. "Bell, get him," he said, his voice steady but edged with exasperation.

A swoosh cut through the air, swift and almost imperceptible, as a young-looking girl—agile and fierce, with a no-nonsense glint in her eyes—rushed forward in a blur of motion. She knocked Kai out with a precise strike, the world spinning into darkness for him in an instant, and then effortlessly brought his limp body back in front of the man, dropping him unceremoniously at his feet.

The man looked at Bell and put his hands on his head, groaning in disbelief. "Bell, I said bring him here, not knock him out," he reprimanded, his tone a mix of annoyance and weary patience, the weight of leadership pressing on him in this unforgiving new world.

She retorted sharply, crossing her arms defiantly. "You said bring him here—you didn't tell me how." Her words carried a spark of rebellion, a hint of the fire that made her both an asset and a headache to the team.

The man shook his head, waving off the argument. "You should have used common sense to understand we need him to tell us what we are going up against." He paused, exhaling slowly to rein in his frustration. "You know what? Forget it. Bell, take him to the station and meet us here."

She nodded curtly, her expression shifting to one of reluctant obedience. "Yes, sir." With that, she quickly scooped Kai up and took him away, her movements efficient and unhesitating, vanishing into the distance like a shadow.

The man sighed again, muttering under his breath as he watched her go. "Now she shows respect. What did the commander give me as a team?" The words were laced with a blend of fondness and irritation, the burdens of command weighing heavier in these apocalyptic times. He straightened up, refocusing on the mission. "Team, let's hurry—I heard Rai was in this area. He might need backup."

They quickly kept running, their boots pounding against the cracked earth, the distant echoes of destruction urging them onward. As they pressed on, they realized they still had a long way to go, the path stretching endlessly before them. The team leader said, his voice carrying a note of incredulity, "How far did that kid run in such a short time?" The question hung in the air, a testament to Kai's desperate endurance.

As they kept running, the landscape growing more desolate with each step, they spotted those ant-looking creatures in the distance, their chitinous bodies glistening under the dim, fractured sky. Among them loomed one massive one with an iron head, its metallic face warped and unyielding, exuding an aura of indomitable menace.

One of the team members whistled low. "That one looks ugly," he remarked, his attempt at humor falling flat amid the tension, a feeble shield against the rising dread.

Another girl, her grip tightening on her weapon, turned to the leader. "What do we do, James?"

James, as the leader, readied himself, his jaw set with grim resolve, the scars of past battles etched into his focused expression. "We must take them down—or you know, we kinda die if we don't." His words were blunt, a stark reminder of the high stakes, cutting through any illusions of safety.

They all wore serious faces, the gravity of the moment etching lines of determination on their features, and brought out their weapons, the metallic clinks and hums filling the air with purposeful energy. James wielded a massive axe that someone his size shouldn't be able to use with such ease, its blade broad and imposing, a relic of battles won through sheer will.

Suddenly, the axe started shining, enveloped in a white brilliant light that pulsed with ethereal power, illuminating the shadows around them like a beacon of defiance. James jumped up with superhuman agility, his muscles straining as he sent a devastating strike on the head of one of those ant-like creatures, the impact resounding like thunder and splitting it in two with a sickening crack, ichor spraying in arcs.

The other team members also went out to fight, pairing off in groups of two for coordinated assaults, their movements synchronized from hard-earned experience, while James stood alone against the horde. He was alone because he was the strongest person in their team, his presence a force that turned the tide, his every swing a testament to unyielding might.

As both duos took down one ant each, their weapons flashing and strikes landing with precision born of survival, and the captain took down three single-handedly, his axe cleaving through armor like butter, they all paused to catch their breath amid the fallen foes. One of them stared in awe, wiping sweat from his brow. "Captain is just too strong—even though we all got our powers at the same time. I heard he was in the military before."

Another nodded, catching his breath as he eyed the massive axe with reverence. "That makes sense. And his axe is insane—I heard he got it from a tier two rhino." The words carried a mix of admiration and envy, highlighting the legends that were already forming in this shattered world.

James turned to them, his voice cutting through the murmurs like a blade, sharp and authoritative, the lines of exhaustion on his face deepening under the strain of battle. "Stop with the gossips and rumors," he commanded, his dark eyes flashing with impatience as he hefted his glowing axe, the weapon still humming with residual energy from the recent kills. The team fell silent, the weight of his words pulling them back to the grim reality before them, the air thick with the acrid scent of ichor and scorched earth.

"We need to face that iron-faced ant," he continued, pointing toward the colossal beast looming in the distance, its metallic visage gleaming ominously, a grotesque fusion of insectile horror and unyielding armor that sent chills down their spines. "It must be the leader. If we take it down, the ants won't be able to coordinate—their swarm will fall into chaos, giving us the edge we need."

He scanned the group, his gaze steady and reassuring despite the odds, instilling a flicker of resolve in their weary expressions. "Also, try to see if you can find Rai. He must be out fighting and protecting—somewhere in this mess, holding the line like he always does." The words carried a note of concern, a rare crack in James's stoic facade, underscoring the bond of their team in this fractured world where every ally was a lifeline.
