Chapter 6 - A Lonely Pursuit

Begin Ivan:

Fooooooh. I hate recalling that time… the time when I lost everything. That damned gate, it took them from me in one way or another. I watched my own sister be dragged away to some unknown place, and I couldn't do a thing about it. Then when I woke up, Sid was nowhere to be found. I still don't even know if he was also pulled into the gate, but I know for a fact that he wouldn't just run away after everything that happened. That guy thought of us as his own siblings, and we thought the same. It's been three years since then, and I have yet to discover any traces of them. It's infuriating how helpless I was in that situation. However, even after waking up… It seems that the gods wanted to curse me even further. When my eyes finally opened, my head was completely covered in blood but I had no injuries to be found. Even more surprising, was the fact that I was no longer in the graveyard. Instead, I ended up somewhere around 100 yards east of it, just sitting in the middle of the forest. How I got there has yet to be discovered… But I have developed some theories based on the events that took place after I woke up.

When my eyes opened, not 10 feet from where I sat, was the skeleton of an unknown person. This skeleton wore only a cape and a helmet fashioned from old worn leather. Frighteningly, the skeleton was absolutely covered with weapons. There were sheathed swords attached at its waist. Swords were held within its rib cage. Arrows protruded from its caped back, and several knives were plundered into sides of the cape as well. Within the skeleton's hand was a broken sword that clearly had endured many battles. Strangely, around the ankle of this bag of bones was a chained cuff. Where or what it was chained to is unknown. It's appearance was certainly unnerving at first, as it clearly looked like its empty eye sockets were staring deep into my soul. I really did sit there for a while just staring at the skeleton. It's not like my slow brain could really process everything that happened within the graveyard at the moment. Instead, as a coping mechanism I believe I just tried to focus on what was in front of me during that time. Eventually I grew tired of staring at the creepy skeleton before me, and I decided it was time to stand up and make my way back to the graveyard. I had to finally face the facts, I couldn't turn away from this pain anymore. But… Upon standing up, I witnessed something that truly sent chills down my spine. As I got to my feet, almost in unison the skeleton rose off of the ground. I stared at the skeleton blankly, then my eyes got wider and wider until I realized what I had just witnessed. I was so startled that I stumbled backwards and fell to the ground. When I hit the ground, the skeleton simply sat back down into the position it was in before. It was like nothing had ever happened. I really thought I was either seeing things or possibly just going crazy from all of the other wild events I had just gone through. I shook my head, and smacked my cheeks with my hands. I just needed to wake myself up and forget about what I thought I just saw. That's right, I just thought I had seen the skeleton man stand up. It didn't actually move, it's dead! After sitting for another few minutes just looking at this boney creature, I stood up again. Aaaaand right on cue, the skeleton stood up just like before. I was still frightened. Duh? But, at least this time I was able to brace myself. I slowly took a step backwards away from the skeleton. However, as I did this the skeleton also took one small step towards me. Okay, I was really beginning to hate this situation. Had I not already been through enough!? I lost my Sister!! I watched her be torn away from me, and now there's this skeleton standing before me. I could feel my anger starting to boil. The unfairness, the tragedy… I had enough. At that moment I knew that I needed to find Sid, I needed to get back to the cemetery. But my anger was overwhelming, so I took a step forward toward the skeleton man without fear. Of course I was surprised, the skeleton immediately took one step back. Was this a game!? I had enough of all of it at that point, so I turned around and just ran. I ran as fast as I could back to the graveyard without looking back. I didn't even care if that damned monster was following me, I just needed to find Sid. If I was able to get back to him, then I knew we could find Oli together. Unfortunately, the gods were not on my side. When I got back to the graveyard, the aftermath of the gate's vortex had destroyed most of everything. The tomb stones were thrown about and broken, the various crypts had also been nearly demolished. I searched and searched for an entire day and Sid was nowhere to be found. During this time I had many memories start flowing back into my head. I remembered that strange woman's voice in my head saying something about letting our hearts roar, then being hit with a strange beam of light right in my chest. As I remembered, I put my hand to my chest where I was hit, but there were no signs of any wound despite the intense pain that overcame my body. I thought of Oli being pulled into the gate as both Sid and I literally tried to claw our way towards her among the violent winds. I just wasn't enough. I couldn't do the one thing a big brother is supposed to do… I didn't protect her and that shame has haunted me ever since. The last thing I remembered was being launched through a literal tombstone and falling into some kind of pit. I recalled falling and then smashing my head into something. That must have been where all of the blood came from, but the fact that I had no injuries on my body made absolutely no sense. Then waking up in the middle of the forest? How is that possible either? I had so many questions that went unanswered. Eventually my search for Sid ended in failure. He was nowhere to be seen. Due to his absence, my most likely thought was that he also got pulled into the gate somehow. If that truly was the case, then I would at least have some kind of side in knowing he was with Oli. However, this was not something I could be certain of. None of the events of that night went the way we expected, so I certainly can't have high expectations of the outcome.

When I had finally given up on my search, I literally collapsed to the ground. I laid on my back, desperately trying to hold back tears. The sun had set, and night was falling. I knew I needed to get back to the old shop we called home. But with the grave yard's entrance to the catacombs being destroyed, I would have to take a much longer route back. "DAMNIT!!!" I howled in frustration. I had placed my hand over my face when I felt tears starting to flow. I was overwhelmed. I laid there for a bit, until the night grew far too silent. There were no sounds or signs of any time of life anymore. It felt as if everything had just stopped. A very, very bad feeling started to come over me. While laying there with my back on the ground, I began to feel like the ground began to move. This startled me, so I immediately sat up trying to look around me in the darkness. Out of nowhere, I swear I heard someone say something. I remember it plain as day. In the most wretched and gurgling voice I heard the words, "Our Lord." I began frantically looking around me trying to figure out where the hell it had come from. I shouted out, "Who's there!?" There was no response, but something more terrifying happened after. At this moment, I knew for sure that the ground really was moving… Because I watched as somewhere around 60 boney and skeletal fingers began reaching towards me out of the ground. I immediately jumped to my feet, I was scared shitless. "What is happening!!!?" I screamed. I watched as the fingers became hands, then arms, then entire skeletal bodies began tearing their way out of the earth. They were clawing themselves towards me. Their skulls were cracked, filthy, and looked absolutely ancient. I was horrified by what I was seeing. "Are these the same as the skeleton man!?" I thought to myself. I began frantically trying to move backwards away from them, but I felt multiple boney hands grab hold of my feet and legs. I heard the same wretched voice again saying the words, "Our lord." I yelled out in desperation, "Get off of me!" As I kicked at their hands trying to free myself. I couldn't escape their grasp, more and more skeletal hands reached out from the earth, pinning me to the ground. As their hands grabbed hold of me, I could feel a surge of power within me. The power began to well, becoming more and more fierce by the second. I was already struggling to tray and release myself from their grasp, but this feeling inside me began to explode. An ominous and destructive force was within my body. "What is happening to me!?" I shouted. The bright purple light began emitting from my body, becoming stronger and stronger. I really was going to explode. The purple light began pouring out of my mouth and eyes as I screamed towards the night sky. Then, in the blink of an eye, I saw the faint glint of a sword and heard the sounds of bones crushing. The skeletal hands that were holding me down had vanished, and I felt something grab hold of my body as this power was overtaking me. I had no way of fighting back, this overcharging power was paralyzing my movement. Whatever grabbed hold of me in the darkness had begun to pull me away through the graveyard. As I was being dragged away, I felt myself losing consciousness until I completely blacked out.

I must have awoken relatively soon after blacking out, because it was still night time. I could still see the glowing light emanating from my body. When I sat up and looked ahead of me, illuminated by the glow of my body… I could distinctly See the same features of the Skeleton Man standing in front of me. I was petrified and thought to myself, "am I going to die here?" I began pushing myself backwards on the ground, trying to gain distance from the Skeleton Man, but before I could gain any true distance a horrible broken sound began coming from the Skeletons mouth. He began to speak!!

 "Y-oo-or-ou u… Mm ma m…Muuu-ss..ssst-t..ttt… Ca-Ca…Con…nnn..tttr-tr..ol..lll…Th th th-theee…em..mm"

I was so scared, but what in the world was this guy saying!? Control them? I mustered a very miniscule amount of courage, and tried to respond to him. "W-what do you mean control them? Are you talking about this purple light!? I don't know what this is! Why are you doing this to me!?" The skeleton remained silent for a short period of time and we just stared at each other in the darkness. When he finally responded, he said "N..No..No….th-th-th..the B..Bo-Bone..ssss. Th..the..they-yy..Ff..Fo..Follo-ww…Y..yy..yooou…Th-the..they..yy..B-b..bel..ooong-gg…t..t-to..oo..Y-y-yoo…ouu." When the Skeleton man finished, he slowly backed away, and disappeared into the darkness. What in the world is happening? And was he the one who saved me from the graveyard? I was so confused, but what he said really shocked me. Did he say that the bones follow me… and belong to me? I wasn't sure what he meant at that time, and I wondered if I would ever meet this Skeleton Man again… All I knew was that I never wanted to go into another graveyard again. In fact, because of that night I never once took another step into the catacombs we used to rome so freely. I couldn't take the chance that the thousands of skeletons below the city would somehow come after me…

Very soon after the Skeleton Man had disappeared, dawn had broken across the skyline.

After that night of terror, I slowly made my way back to the abandoned apothecary shop we had called home. While on the way, I had the distinct feeling I may have been being followed. But every time I would turn around, there would be absolutely nothing and no one in sight. At some point I just began running. I ran all the way back to our home, and collapsed into the door completely out of breath. As I tried to gather myself, I began to look around the empty shop. It filled me with feelings of despair, longing, and anger. I was alone. But as I had been looking around while trying to hold back the tears welling up, I caught a glance of myself in a mirror. I nearly screamed because of the shock. I did not look like myself anymore… my hair!? It was white!! How was this possible??? I used to have such rich black hair and now it was pale as a ghost. I was crushed. I used to love the way I looked, and Oli always told me how jealous she was of my hair. But now I just looked, well…. Kind of scary. While still trying to get over my white hair, I decided to lay back on the old tattered cot I used as my bed. While lying there I glanced around the room, looking at the assortment of cushions Oli used to use as a bed and the old makeshift hammock Sid with use for his. The emptiness and lack of life in this place was tormenting. I spent the next couple of days just lazing around the dusty old shop. I would spend the day trying not to think about all of the horrible things that had happened. When night would fall and I would finally fall asleep, I would experience the most horrid nightmares. The moment Oli would be taken into the gate would replay in my mind, and I would regularly find myself gasping for air as I awoke after dreaming about the skeletons grabbing hold of me. Soon the torment of these dreams and my own lack of action became too much. I was incredibly frustrated with myself. My anger was beginning to take over and I would find myself clenching my own fists so hard that my palms would begin to bleed. At one point while drowning in my own self deprecating thoughts, I became so angry that I punched the stone wall of the shop as hard as I could. Now, I knew I was a big kid and that my strength was far superior to that of any average 10 year old. However, when I punched the wall I had created a web of cracks spreading throughout the stone. Unfortunately when I struck the wall, I also felt almost all of the bones in my hand breaking. The pain was unbearable in the moment and I could clearly see a few of my fingers were literally bent out of shape. I didn't really know what to do, so I began frantically looking for something I could use to splint my fingers or just to wrap my hand. But before I could even do it, I literally felt the bones in my hand begin to rearrange themselves. It was painful. I could see the bones of my fingers moving beneath my skin. In a matter of seconds, my hand felt like it was healed. "What in the world just happened??" I had thought to myself. So many strange things have been happening to me these days… I really wished it would end.

After these few days of reflection and struggle, I inevitably made up my mind. I needed to find Oli and my best chance of that was to find Sid. With the two of us, I knew that we could figure this out together. He was the only other person in this world that I knew I could always count on aside from Oli. So that's exactly what I did. I gathered whatever small belongings I had, and I set off into the world to find my friends. I was sure that if they were in my position, they would do the same for me.

I spent the next four years traveling around Bane, and then eventually made my way to another kingdom where I spent another two years at a certain place. This period of time took much longer than I ever could have expected. Years passed before I even knew it, but in this time I knew that I grew closer and closer to finding my sister and my best friend. During these travels I learned many things about the world and experienced various different and unforgettable things.

To start with, my first four years of travel could be considered a time of self discovery. There were various things about myself that I was unsure of. I lacked confidence in myself and I felt that whatever the power was inside of me, if I was unable to control it… it would consume me. On many occasions it felt like I was being followed. Whether it was my own paranoia or truthful in nature, I could never escape the feeling that I was being watched. Additionally, it felt as though I was plagued by nightmares. They would mostly relate to the night that Oli was pulled into the gate, but honestly… The worst always involved the skeletons that tried to attack me at the graveyard. I would regularly awake drenched in sweat, with heavy and erratic breathing. Sometimes I would wake up and I would swear that I saw the red handprint of some skeletal being left on my arm. Due to these horrific nightmares I would experience, I slowly but surely became a victim to insomnia. Then eventually, I just gave up on sleeping all together. At first I felt completely exhausted and mentally drained. But after some time it felt like sleep was no longer an option for me even if I tried. Instead, I would spend my nights in deep thought and concentration. This helped me greatly and I felt like my body was able to rest in these quiet moments of presence. The only side effect from not sleeping at this point… Was the anger. I would slip into wrathful moments of rage whenever I thought about my helplessness when Oli was taken from me. I would find myself punching into trees and even knocking them down entirely. I was growing stronger through my anger. However, I could not let this volatile feeling take over my common sense. The time I spent in concentration during the nights also helped me subside and control my ever growing temper, as this was the best I could do thus far.

At a certain point in my journey… As I traveled around the kingdom of Bane searching for answers about Sid and Oli's possible whereabouts, I discovered some very troubling news. While on the eastern coast of Bane, I had begun frequenting a street market in a small town called Landgen. It was a quaint fishing town that lived off of its trading with the Kingdom of Doria, not even a day's boat ride across from the Dorian strait that borders the eastern coast of Bane. The fishing in this area was certainly prosperous, and because of this they held a market along their Main Roadway every other day. The townsfolk called it the Angwyn market. Supposedly it was named after a certain god who had created the Dorian strait ages ago and brought forth the bounty of fish in the area. Whether this is truth or legend it was beyond me. However, this market allowed me many opportunities to speak with the locals about different ongoings within the world. The information was incredibly important. Additionally, and I can't complain, it gave me a great opportunity to try many fish that had been brought back to the town. I luckily still had some coin left over from the various thefts myself and my friends had enacted in the kingdom of Bane. I made sure to bring it with me in cases of emergency. It just so happened that on a day at the fish market, I saw a certain food that I deemed an emergency in order to try it. I swear, it was the most delicious aroma I have ever had wafted into my nose. There was a large line leading up towards a stall that read, "Pie of the gods." The stall was run by a single man with dark features wearing a knit cap. I'm still unsure of what the name of the stand really meant, but by happenstance when waiting in line to try one of the pies I heard someone speaking about something called "the gates." Considering the event that happened at the arch of Bane, this sincerely peaked my interest. I attempted to lean forward in order to hear more of the conversation and realized the two townsfolk were reading something off of a piece of parchment. The top of the parchment read the words "WORLD NOTICE." Upon closer inspection, it actually seemed that everyone in this like was also holding this same parchment and reading it. I had to get my hands on one of those parchments. Eventually I made it to the stand and was able to procure myself a pie. The man selling the Pies was tall and seemed to be very muscular. I also noticed at his hip was some kind of angled, carved piece of wood. When I initially asked for 1 pie, the man looked at me with some kind of strange familiarity and gave me a faint smile. He said to me, "hello there kiddo. Welcome to my stand, you are lucky to be here as I only come through these parts every now and then. You're a mighty big fellow tho, how old are you?" I responded and told him, "Well actually just turned 11 not too long ago. But yes I suppose I'm quite big for my age. If you don't mind, could I ask what is in these pies you're selling? They smell absolutely delicious." "Ahhhh, you have a keen sense of smell, young one! These are my famous boar pies. I usually hunt them out in the forests that border this town. However, these boars are only active at certain times of the year. So usually I only stop by this town to sell my pies every now and then." The man finished with a nod and a big smile. "Boar pies at a fish market? Now that's really interesting. I've been eating a lot of fish ever since I got to this town, so this will be quite the special treat! Ah, by the way. I noticed that many people are reading something off of parchment paper. Do you happen to know what that is?" I asked earnestly. "Indeed I do, kiddo. That's what we call a newsletter. Been lots of em' these days. Here, you can have this one." The stall owner said as he handed me a piece of parchment. "Thank you sir!" I responded gleefully. "Ahh also, here. This one's on the house. Take this pie and enjoy yourself. Also, take care in what you read from the newsletter. Be sure to take it all in aye?" The man said with a wink. "Wow! You're so generous sir! Can I possibly ask the name of my benefactor?" "Heh, I'm no one special kiddo. I'll tell ya my name the next time we meet. Deal?" "Haha if you say so Sir. Thanks again!" I shouted as I headed off with my pie and parchment. What a kind and strange man. I wandered off to a short cobblestone wall and sat myself there for a while. Man, that Boar pie was incredible. No wonder the stalls name was "Pie of the gods." Its flavor was truly divine. After finishing my meal, I brought out the newsletter I had stuffed into my coat pocket. What I read truly changed my view on the world. I had know idea the world was in such a state:

————————————————————————————————————————

I felt incredibly uneasy. Did we… cause all of this? The three of us were the only people at the arch of Bane. The thought that us kids had just unleashed the world's greatest calamities began to fill me with dread. I felt my breathing starting to become erratic, I think I was starting to panic. This overwhelming feeling of guilt was bringing back the horrible memories of that night. Then there it was… the purple light that would often begin glowing whenever I entered a state of emotional instability. It began to emanate from my body, even as I sat on the cobblestone wall in broad daylight. Why does this keep happening! The light continued to grow and was overwhelming my body. The ground then started to shake and move beneath me, just like when the skeletons came after me in the graveyard. I yelled out, "NOO!! Not again!" Suddenly, I felt something unexpected. Out of nowhere, I felt the hand of someone on my shoulder. I looked to my left and there he was again. It was the Skeleton man, someone I thought I would never see again. "J-j-juuussst, Bre-e-eeathe. We-w-wee mus-ss-t… fi-ii-nnn-nd, Nigh-ight-tt–i-in-nnn-g-aa-le." With his hand on my shoulder, for some reason I began to feel more relaxed. But why? I was horrified the first time I met this skeleton, but now… Now it felt like he was protecting me. Nervously and possibly against my better judgment, I put my trust in this intimidating creature. I listened to him and I began to breathe deep and controlled breaths in and out. The purple hued light began to fade from my body. When the light finally dispersed, the Skeleton man took his boney fingers off of my shoulder. I looked at him, still very confused by this situation and asked, "wh-who are you? Why are you helping me?"

The Skeleton man's hollow eyes looked towards me for a long moment and then he responded, "R-r-rra-av-v-en. M-ma-m-my n-nn-na-ame, i-ii-is-ss R-ra-a-ven." He then turned around and began to run away from the town. I yelled after him, "Wait!! Wait, Raven!" He stopped for a short moment and looked back at me, but then continued on running away from the town at a great speed until he was no longer in sight. From that moment on, as strange as it may sound, I knew that Raven was my friend. He was not the monster I had first thought of him as, and that was my mistake. I had wondered where he had gone since the first time I met him, but now it seems that he was following me all this time. In fact, it could be very well possible that the feeling I was experiencing of being watched, was actually just Raven looking after me. His motives for helping me were unknown, but this was now the second time that he had appeared when I was in trouble. I couldn't overlook this benevolence towards me. Now that I really saw him for what he is, I thought long and hard about the things he had said to me before. I recalled Raven saying that the bones belonged to me, and that I had to control them. Clearly whatever this power was inside of me, I had absolutely no control over it. I was still unsure if the skeletons were also related somehow. I needed answers and guidance in this matter. I no longer had Sid or Oli by my side as the voices of reason. Up until this point, I had felt that I was truly alone. But now it seems I have made an unexpected friend. Raven said I needed to find someone named Nightingale. I really had no idea who this was, but maybe this could be a clue to what is happening to me. My main goal was to find Sid and Oli, but unless I could take hold of whatever this power is, there was no way I would be able to keep going. If I lost control again and those skeletons came… I'm not entirely sure what may happen to me or anyone near me. I also had to take into account that Raven may not always be there to help me when I need it. I had to be able to rely on myself when the time came. I resolved myself from that moment. I would find this Nightingale person and use whatever this power was to help me find Sid and Oli. Perhaps even along the way, I just might be able to find out more information on the 8 gates. I set off that day, leaving the town of Landgen behind. No one could have foresaw what kind of fate awaited me.

For a few months I continued to travel around Bane with absolutely no luck in finding any type of information about a Man named Nightingale. I thought that if I could meet Raven again then I might be able to get more information. Unfortunately, I had not seen or felt the presence of Raven since my time in Landgen. Eventually I decided it was time for me to leave the land of Bane. My plan was to hitch a ride on a ship heading to the kingdom of Cashmere. I knew this was a risk, mainly because Cashmere is an enormous kingdom and additionally contains the area called Giant Wilderness. I've heard a lot of stories about the Giant Wilderness throughout my childhood, but the one thing that stuck with me was the number of untamable beasts residing in its expansive forests. If I was to make it to Cashmere, I would definitely need to avoid this area for the time being. I don't think I would be nearly strong enough to put up a fight if I was to encounter the Monsters that live there. I ended up making it to a Marina of ships located at the northwest coast of Bane. This place was called Berkenvain, a merchant town used as a trading post between different kingdoms. I visited the docks and attempted to converse with some of the seamen who were stationed around the ships. Most of these guys looked pretty rough around the edges so I wasn't sure what kind of response I'd receive. I approached two men wearing rather dirty clothes. They smelled very pungent, possibly of fish and seaweed? The first man had salt and peppered dark hair with a goatee. The other man wore a cloth tied atop his head and he had a nasty scar across his nose. "Uhem, sorry to bother you sirs, I was hoping I might be able to inquire about some information on traveling across the Sea to Cashmere?" I asked the men politely. The man with the cloth on his head looked at me with a very unimpressed look. "Oi, screw off kid. If ya ain't got money then ya ain't gonna be sailing anywhere." The man said with a very rude tone. This irritated me quite a bit and definitely flared my temper. I just ignored the man with the cloth on his head and looked to the other with the salt and peppered hair. "You. I'll give you some coin if you tell me where I can hitch a ride on a ship." I said as I flicked a coin in his direction. The Salt and pepper man caught it and smiled cheekily. "Righto kid. That's the way it ought to be. Head to that ship over there." He said as he pointed towards a large boat with massive maroon sails. "That boat leaves on the morrow to the southern point of Cashmere. If ya can pay 10 silvers they'll transport ya the whole way. The captain of that ship is at the Inn takin vouchers. Better hurry." I nodded towards him and then met eyes with the cloth headed man. He was glaring at me pretty harshly. I once again just ignored him and headed toward the Inn that was maybe a block away from the docks. Unfortunately, before I even made it around the corner of the street to the building I felt something touch the back of my head….Then everything went dark.
