Chapter 23 - Ch23 Lonney

Jonathan had just arrived outside of the city in the suburbs. Jonathan followed his map and looked at the house numbers. Before finally he had arrived at the most recent address Lonny was known to stay at. Jonathan parked on the side of the road and observed the house. It was a cheap looking house, and the paint was a dull tan color.

Jonathan walked across the street and up the front step before he arrived in front of the front door. He looked through the window of the front door and saw that the light was on. Jonathan shouted, "Hello?" Then he started to bang on the door loudly. He could hear some music playing from inside the house.

Jonathan continued to knock as he looked through the window. A couple minutes later he saw a pretty brunette in tight neon green pants and a blue tank top walked over to the front door. It was Cynthia, his father's latest girlfriend.

Cynthia opened the door and looked up at Jonathan. She asked, "Can I help you?"

Jonathan said, "Yeah, is Lonny around?"

Cynthia said, "Yeah, he's out back. What do you want?"

Jonathan walked inside and said, "To look around."

Cynthia said, "Hey, what do you think you're doing? Hey!"

Jonathan said, "I'll be fast." Jonathan then walked throughout the house and checked all the rooms.

Jonathan said, "Hey, Will? You here, buddy? Will?" As he was walking back down the hallway, Lonny came into the house and pinned him against the wall.

Jonathan said, "Get off!" Then pushed Lonny off of him.

Lonny smiled and said, "Damn, you've gotten stronger."

Cynthia watched this scene unfold and asked, "Will someone please explain what the hell is going on?"

Lonny said, "Jonathan, Cynthia. Cynthia, this is Jonathan. My oldest." Cynthia looked at Lonny as she chewed her gum.

Lonny said, "Come here." Lony tried to hug Jonathan, but he was pushed away.

Jonathan said, "Get off me, man."

Lonny said, "What are you doing here?"

Jonathan said, "Will missing, you seen him?"

Lonny said, "No."

Jonathan said, "Well, I'm gonna look around." Jonathan checked the whole house but didn't find Will.

Lonny said, "See."

Jonathan walked out of the house into the back yard and checked in the trunk of the car. Lonny said, "Really? Want to check up my ass, too? I told you the same thing as I told those cops, he's not here, he never has been."

Jonathan asked, "Then why didn't you call mom back?"

Lonny said, "I don't know. I just... I assumed she just forgot where he was. You know, he was lost or something. The boy never was very good at taking care of himself."

Jonathan said, "This isn't some joke, all right? There are search parties, reporters..."

Lonny said, "Hopper's not still chief, is he?" Jonathan looked away.

Lonny said, "Tell your mother she's gotta get you out of that hellhole. Come out here to the city. People are more real here, you know?"

Jonathan said, "I have a friend that disagrees."

Lonny ignored that and continued, "Then I can see you more." Jonathan shook his head.

Lonny asked, "You think I don't want to see you?"

Jonathan said, "I know you don't."

Lonny said, "See, that's your mother talkin' right there. She even know you're here?" Jonathan shook his head.

Lonny said, "Great. So, one kid goes missing, the other one runs wild? Some real fine parenting right there. Look, all I'm saying is, maybe I'm not the asshole, all right?"

Jonathan shoved a poster into Lonny's hands before he walked away. He said, "In case you forgot what he looks like." Lonny watched Jonathan walk away with a small frown on his face.

Cynthia walked behind him and hugged him. She said, "He's kind of cute. Maybe I'll trade you in for the younger model?"

Meanwhile Hopper was sitting in the police station talking to the old man Benny was talking to yesterday. Hopper said, "Earl, do you have any idea why Benny might have killed himself?"

Earl said, "It don't make no sense, Chief."

Hopper asked, "You, uh, notice anything..." Earl nodded his head as Hopper lit a cigarette for him.

Hopper continued, "odd about him the last few weeks?"

Earl said, "No, we're fixin' to go fishing down at Etowah next Sunday. I mean, he was looking forward to it. I know that."

Hopper asked, "He got any enemies you might know about? I mean people who might not want him around?"

Earl sighed before he said, "Exes didn't like him much. That's for sure, but... nah."

Hopper asked, "When's the last time you saw him?"

Earl said, "Yesterday. Lunch, same as always."

Hopper asked, "Just you and the boys?"

Earl said, "Yep. Me and Henry and..." Earl sighed sadly.

Earl said, "Well, there was this, uh, this kid. No kid dod this.

Hoper asked, "Kid? What are you talking about?"

Earl said, "Yeah. At lunch, uh, there was this boy that, uh... I mean, he was trying to steal food out of Benny's kitchen. Can you imagine that?"

Hopper asked, "This kid... what'd he look like?"

Earl raised his hand and said, "Well, he was about yea high. You know, tiny like. I didn't get a good look at him though. He was back in the kitchen." Callahan walked over and showed Earl a poster of Will.

Callahan asked, "He look like this?" Earl grabbed the poster and took a closer look.

Earl said, "Oh, no, that's... That's Lonny's missing kid. No, this was a different kid. This one had really short hair. I mean, it was buzzed nearly to the scalp."

Hopper said, "Yeah, well, let's... You know let's forget about the haircut. I mean, if this kid had a buzz cut... could it be Lonny's kid?"

Earl looked at the poster again and said, "Well, I... I didn't get a good look at him. About the right height, though. I mean, could've been. Yeah, that's... Could've been." Hopper sighed before he shook Earl hand and walked away.

John and April searched around for a few hours, and it was now 3:00 pm. John said, "April, let's head out, we have been searching for a couple hours. Also, I have a package coming to the house."

April said, "Okay. What's the package?"

John said, "A secret."

April pouted and started to walk ahead of John. John sped up and joined her, April hmphed as she turned her head away from him. John said, "It's a surprise for you."

April asked excitedly, "Really? For me? What is it?"

John said, "It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you? Now, would it?" April nodded her head and held John's hand as they walked back to his car through the woods. They arrived at his car a few minutes later and got in before he drove them back to his house.

Pulling into his driveway, John got out of his car. April followed soon after and said, "John, what are all of these boxes."

John said, "This is your surprise."

April said, "Wow, what could be in so many boxes?"

John said, "Why not open one and find out." April nodded and walked to one of the boxes and opened it slowly. She was surprised to see a tire inside; the tire had a chrome rim.

April turned to look at John and asked, "Why is there a car tire in there?"

John said mysteriously, "I wonder?" April walked each of the boxes one by one and opened them. She found car parts inside of each box.

April suddenly realized something and looked over at John. John smiled at her; April squealed before she ran over to John and jumped on him. John caught her in a big hug and April kissed John on the cheek.

April said, "Thank you, John." John smiled as he set April down on the ground.

John asked, "You want to help me put it together?"

April said, "I don't know how to."

John smiled and said, "That's fine, I'll just have you do some simple things. All right?"

April said, "Okay." John first walked over to each box and found which box had which part. After he organized all the parts in a neat line. John then walked into his garage and grabbed 4 jack stands. John and April set them up in a rectangle and then John walked over to the frame of the car. John picked it up and walked over before he set it down on the jack stands.

John then began to bolt the engine compartment and other parts of the chassis onto the frame. John had April tighten all of the bolts with a rachet and she seemed to be enjoying herself. John asked, "Are you having fun?"

April said happily, "Yeah, this is so cool." John nodded before he continued to put different components onto the car, step by step.

After 2 hours, the build process had progressed quickly. All of the electrical work had been finished, and all the wires were in the right places. All of the outer panels were on and all that was left was to put the doors on, the wheels and the convertible roof.

April was bouncing up and down as she looked at the beautiful pink Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. April watched as John put on the doors and the convertible roof. John stopped when all that was left was the tires. John walked over to April and asked, "Will you do the honors?"

April nodded and said, "Yeah." April walked over to the car and began to put the tires on with John's help. When she finished tightening all the tires, she stepped back and looked at the beautiful car in front of her. April was shaking with excitement causing a certain part of her body to bounce up and down. It was now 6:30 pm, and the sun was starting to set. Plunging Hawkins into the darkness.

April said, "It's so beautiful!"

John walked behind her and hugged her, John said, "How about we get the beauty off those jacks and go on a joy ride?" April nodded her head. John walked over and took the car of the jacks one by one.

When it was down, April started to walk towards the passenger side of the car. John asked, "What do you think you're doing?"

April looked over at John with confusion. She said, "Getting in the car. We are going on a joy ride, right?"

John asked, "Who's car is this?"

April asked, "Mine, right?"

John said, "Right, so why are you getting in the passenger side? You are driving."

April said, "What? I don't know how to drive."

John said, "Calm down and get in, I'll teach you." April nodded nervously and got into the driver side. John got into the passenger side and said, "Alright, so what do you know about driving?"

April answered, "I don't know? I know what the pedals do and the turning signals, but that's it."

John said, "That's more than enough to start on the road. Let's get going. Put the car in reverse and back out of the driveway slowly." April nodded her head and shifted into reverse before she backed out of the driveway. She looked both ways and saw that there was no one. So, she pulled out into the road, and they were off.

At the Wheeler residence, Nancy was in her room laying on her bed. Nancy was on the phone with Barb. Barb said, "Why do I have to come?"

Nancy said, "Because I don't want to go by myself."

Barb said, "But--"

Nancy interrupted, "Barb. It's not rocket science. You just do what I did for you, remember? That time I covered for you?"

Barb sighed and said, "Fine, but if we get caught, I'm pushing all blame to you."

Nancy said, "Okay, I accept. So, you're coming, right?"

Barb said, "Yeah."

Suddenly, Karen shouted from downstairs, "Nancy! Dinner!"

Nancy moved away from the phone and shouted, "Coming!"

Nancy said into the phone, "Look, I gotta go. I'll see you in an hour." Then Nancy walked out of her room and walked down the stairs. She walked into the dining room and saw everyone sitting at the table, waiting for her. Nancy walked a little faster over to her chair and sat down. She noticed that Dustin and Lucas were also sitting with her family at the table.

Everyone was eating in silence and the only sound in the dining room was of forks and knives hitting the plates. Karen looked over at everyone and saw that the boys were playing with their food, not eating it. Karen asked, "Is there something wrong with the meatloaf?"

Dustin said, "Oh, no, I had two bologna sandwiches for lunch. I don't know why."

Lucas chuckled and said, "Me, too."

Nancy said, "It's delicious, Mommy."

Karen said, "Thank you, Sweetie."

Nancy said, "So, there's this... special assembly thing tonight... for Will at the school field. Barb's driving."

Karen said, "Why am I just hearing this now?"

Nancy explained, "I thought you knew."

Karen said, "I told you I don't want you out after dark until Will is found."

Nancy said, "I know, I know, but it'd be super weird if I'm not there. I mean, everyone is going."

Karen sighed and thought for a couple seconds. She said, "Just... be back by 10:00 pm." Nancy nodded her head.

Karen looked at the boys and said, "Why don't you bring them along with you as well, Nancy?"

Mike, Dustin and Lucas said, "No!" "Mm-mm" The boys shook their heads exaggeratedly.

Karen said, "Don't you think you should be there? For Will?" The boys remained quiet, but suddenly El came down the stairs. Mike spit up the milk he was sipping, and his eyes widened. Karen saw this and was about to turn around when Dustin smacked the table with his hands grabbing her attention.

Dustin said, "Sorry. Spasm." Holly leaned down into her chair and was starting to tear up.

Karen said, "It's okay, Holly. It's just a loud noise."

Nancy looked at Dustin and said sarcastically, "Nice." Dustin looked down.
