Chapter 10 - The set up

Sam sat in the passenger seat of the van, her fingers tightening around her phone as she stared at the message that had shaken her to the core: "The Broker knows you're watching."

The drive to the warehouse seemed to stretch endlessly. Sam sat in the back seat, her thoughts whirling. Every second ticked by with a heavy weight, the stakes higher than ever. She looked out at the darkened streets of the city, mentally preparing herself for what was coming.

The truth was sinking in fast—this wasn't just about finding Lily anymore. This was much bigger, and she'd walked straight into the lion's den. But there was no turning back now. She had one chance to use the upcoming shipment as her ticket to bring down Carter Blake, Mr. X, and the entire syndicate. She couldn't let fear stop her.

Sam, are you absolutely sure about this?" Tony asked from the driver's seat. His voice was laced with concern, his eyes flicking up to meet hers in the rearview mirror. He was always calm under pressure, but tonight was different.

Sam took a deep breath, steadying herself. I'm sure. We have to do this. It's the only way.

Tony hesitated, his knuckles tightening around the steering wheel. "Blake is dangerous. We all know that. If we walk into this blind—"

"We're not walking blind," Sam interrupted, her voice steady. "We've scouted the location. We know his routine. This is our best shot. If we don't take it, we may never get another chance."

Silence hung heavy in the car. The other members of the team, handpicked by Tony, sat in the back with Sam, tension visible in their eyes. Kyle, the youngest of the group, shifted nervously in his seat. His foot tapped restlessly against the car floor.

"I'm ready," Kyle muttered, more to himself than anyone else.

Tony cast a quick glance at the rookie. "You better be, kid. This isn't a drill."

Sam nodded in agreement, her gaze shifting to the gun strapped to her side. "Just stick to the plan. We get in, gather what we need, and get out. No heroics."

Our priority is getting Lily out and bringing these guys down. Understood?"

The team nodded in silent agreement, their faces grim but determined. Sam could tell they were nervous—hell, she was nervous—but this was the best shot they had.

"Let's do this," she whispered under her breath as the van rolled forward, the dim city lights fading behind them as they headed toward the outskirts.

The warehouse loomed ahead, a massive, ominous structure in the industrial district. It was the perfect location for a transaction of this scale—isolated and far from prying eyes. But that isolation worked both ways. If things went wrong, there would be no backup. They were on their own.

The car came to a stop a few blocks away, hidden from view. Sam adjusted her jacket, concealing her weapon as best she could. She turned to the team. "This is it. You all know your roles. We stick together, stay focused, and we'll get through this."

Tony gave her a curt nod. "You sure Blake will be there?" Sam's lips tightened.

"He'll be there. He doesn't miss these kinds of deals. This is the exact address he gave me during our last meeting when I disguised to meet him.

The team exited the vehicle in silence, moving quickly through the shadows toward the warehouse. The air was cool and damp, a faint mist clinging to the ground. Every step felt heavy with anticipation.

The warehouse loomed ahead, a massive, shadowy structure in the middle of nowhere. Sam felt her heart begin to race as they had parked their vehicle a good distance away. From here, they could see Blake's men patrolling the area, making their way around the building at regular intervals.

Sam grabbed her earpiece, sliding it into place. "Stay sharp. We go in after the next patrol passes. I'll take make a point."

Tony motioned for them to halt. He crouched low, peering around the corner. "All clear," he whispered.

Sam took a deep breath, steadying her nerves. She had been in dangerous situations before, but something about this felt different. Blake was smarter than most of the criminals she had faced. He had resources, connections, and he wasn't afraid to use them.

She signaled for the team to follow, slipping through a side door Tony had scouted earlier. Inside, the warehouse was mostly empty, save for a few crates stacked haphazardly in the far corner. The lighting was dim, casting long shadows across the floor.

"Fan out,". We split up," Sam said, her voice low but commanding. "Two of you take the left with Tony, the rest follow me. We find Blake and get the hell out before they know what hit them." Sam whispered, motioning for Tony and Kyle to cover the left side while she and the others took the right.

The team scattered, moving with the precision of trained operatives. Sam's pulse quickened as she made her way deeper into the warehouse, her eyes scanning every corner for signs of life. She hadn't seen Lily yet, but she knew the girl was here—she *had* to be.

Then, she heard it.

Voices.

Sam stopped in her tracks, pressing her back against a shipping container as she strained to listen.

"It's all set," a deep voice said. "The shipment's ready, and Blake's meeting with Mr. X in a few hours."

Sam peeked around the corner, her heart skipping a beat when she saw Blake standing just a few feet away, surrounded by a group of his men. He was talking on his phone, his face twisted in concentration.

Sam motioned for her team to hold back, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. They couldn't afford to rush in blindly.

But as she took a step forward, ready to make her move, something felt wrong.

Too quiet.

Too easy.

And then it hit her.

The trap snapped shut.

Suddenly, a door at the back of the warehouse swung open, and out stepped Carter Blake, his presence filling the room with a menacing aura. He walked confidently, a smirk plastered on his face.

"Well, well, well," Blake drawled, his voice echoing in the vast space. "If it isn't Sam. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Sam's blood ran cold. He knew. Her cover was blown, and there was no turning back.

"Oh my God" Sam muttered under her breath, raising her weapon as her team did the same.

They were trapped.

Blake stepped forward, a smug grin spreading across his face as he casually strolled toward Sam. He looked more confident than ever, like he knew exactly how things were going to play out.

You never should have come here with these hungry-looking kids, Sam," Blake sneered, his eyes locking onto hers. "Did you really think you could outsmart me?" ms Lena Kline"

He let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "I knew you weren't who you said you were when you showed up at my mansion. I was stupid to fall for your little act. As soon as I realized, I made sure you wouldn't get far."

Blake's grin widened. "You were lucky to get away last time. How'd you like the sniper's shot grazing your arm? That was just a taste. Next time, you won't be so fortunate."

Sam's blood ran cold. He knew. Her cover was blown, and there was no turning back.

"Blake," she said, forcing calm into her voice, "I'm here for the shipment. Nothing more."

Blake laughed, the sound grating in the eerie silence. "The shipment? Is that what you think this is about? Oh, Sam, you really have no idea what you've gotten yourself into."

Sam's mind raced as she tried to figure out a way out of this. The odds were stacked against them, but she wasn't going down without a fight. She kept her weapon trained on Blake, her jaw clenched in determination.

"You're not walking away from this, Blake," Sam shot back. "We've got everything we need to take you down."

Blake chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. "Oh really? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like *you're* the one out of options," he said, his tone dripping with arrogance. He took a step closer, his eyes narrowing. "Remember what I told you? If you aren't who you say you are, I'll deal with you. And trust me, it won't be pretty."

Sam could feel the tension in the air, her team looking to her for direction. They were surrounded, outgunned, and outnumbered, but Sam wasn't about to give up now. She took a step forward, her eyes narrowing as she stared Blake down.

"Let Lily go, and maybe I'll consider not blowing your head off," Sam said, her voice cold and steady.

Blake's grin only widened. "Lily? Oh, sweetheart, you're a little too late for that. She's long gone. And as for blowing my head off…" He gestured to the men surrounding them, all with weapons trained on Sam and her team. "You might want to rethink that plan."

Sam's heart sank at his words, but she refused to let it show on her face. She had to stay strong, stay focused. There was still a chance—there had to be.

Before she could respond, Blake's men emerged from the shadows, surrounding her team. Guns were drawn, pointed at her and the others. Sam's heart pounded in her chest as she assessed the situation. They were outnumbered and outgunned.

"Tony!" she hissed under her breath, but it was too late. They were trapped.

Blake stepped closer, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "You should have stayed out of this, Sam. But now… well, now you've made things personal."

"Alright," Blake said, clapping his hands together as if the conversation was over. "I think we've had enough fun for one night. Let's wrap this up, boys."

Sam clenched her fists, anger surging through her veins. "This isn't about me, Blake. It's about the lives you're destroying, the people you're trafficking. I'm here to stop you."

Blake chuckled, shaking his head. "Oh, Sam. You're in way over your head. This operation is bigger than you could ever imagine. You think taking me down will stop it? You're just scratching the surface."

Sam's mind raced, searching for a way out. Her eyes flicked to the crates behind Blake. If she could create a distraction, maybe they could make a break for it.

Tony, now!" she shouted, lunging for her gun.

Tony reacted instantly, knocking over one of the crates and sending its contents spilling across the floor. Blake's men were momentarily distracted, and Sam took her chance. She fired a shot, taking down one of the thugs closest to her.

Chaos erupted.

Gunfire filled the air as Blake's men opened fire. Sam ducked behind a stack of crates, her heart racing. She returned fire, taking down another man, but they were still outnumbered. The team scrambled for cover, but it was clear—they were cornered.

Blake stood back, watching the scene unfold with a satisfied smirk. "You're predictable, Sam," he said, raising his voice over the gunfire. "Always the hero, always trying to save the day."

Sam gritted her teeth, ignoring the sting of a bullet grazing her arm. She wouldn't let him win. She couldn't.

But as the gunfire continued and her team was pinned down, reality set in. There was no way out. They were trapped, with Blake and his men

closing in.

Blake took a step forward, his smirk widening. "You should have stayed out of this, Sam," he said, his voice dripping with mockery. "Now, you and these hungry-looking kids of yours are going to pay the price."

Sam's heart sank. They were surrounded, and Blake had the upper hand. The plan had failed, and there was no clear way out.
