The capital city of Elurien gleamed like a crown under the twilight sun—noble spires rising above ash-covered streets. But in the eastern quarter, where royalty dared not step, a boy lay unconscious in the alley, flames still smoldering from the cracked cobblestones.
Kael opened his eyes.
His breath came in short, panicked gasps. Blood trickled from a gash on his temple, and his shirt was scorched as if lightning had struck him. Around him, buildings were half-collapsed, windows shattered… and people stared—from a distance, too afraid to come close.
"What… what happened?" he whispered. His voice sounded strange to his own ears.
Then—her voice echoed in his head.
> "You called me, Kael. You asked to live, and I answered."
He clutched his head as flashes of memory surged: a man cloaked in black, a blade of pure shadow, a burning sigil on his chest—and a scream. His scream. No… not his. Hers.
Suddenly, footsteps. Metal. Soldiers.
"That's him!" one barked. "He did this!"
Kael stumbled back, panic rising. His body moved on instinct. Before he could speak, his vision blurred—and the air around him shimmered. Heat. Flame.
Then it happened again.
A surge of fire erupted from his palm. The closest soldier was thrown into a wall. The others fell back, shouting. But Kael wasn't in control.
> "You're not ready," said the voice. "But they'll kill you if you hesitate again."
Kael ran.
Through smoke, through stone alleys and broken paths, until a shadow dropped in front of him—cloaked, armed, and eyes like ice.
"Kael Revenhart," the stranger said, drawing a blade that whispered as it left its sheath, "You're coming with me."
"…Who are you?"
The stranger didn't answer. He struck.
