Chapter 141: Theodore: I Want to Come Here Often

Friday morning.

Supervisor Rosen called Theodore and Bernie to give a report.

When Supervisor Rosen heard that the deceased was confirmed to be only an imitator of Annie Halleck, he stopped the report.

He opened the door and gestured to two agents at the doorway, telling them to call Agent Lombardi.

A few minutes later, Agent Lombardi appeared in the supervisor's office, his face glistening with oil.

As soon as he entered, Bernie winked and made repeated eye signals at him.

Agent Lombardi looked at Bernie, feeling very confused.

Precisely conveying information with one's eyes wasn't a subject in the FBI's selection and training curriculum.

Supervisor Rosen scrutinized Agent Lombardi, then turned to look at Bernie.

Bernie was desperately winking and was caught red-handed by Supervisor Rosen, so he quickly composed himself and lowered his head obediently.

Supervisor Rosen had no intention of letting him off. He asked, "What's wrong with your eyes?"

Bernie quickly shook his head.

Supervisor Rosen stared at him for a moment, then turned to Agent Lombardi. "You told them that the deceased was both the victim and witness in the first case you investigated after joining the FBI?"

Agent Lombardi looked at Bernie and Theodore.

Theodore was lost in thought, first wondering if there were any omissions in the communication security report, then thinking about the recent psychology journals and magazines he'd read. He then began mentally sorting through the development and research of current cutting-edge psychological theories, considering where to start.

When he came back to his senses, he blinked at Agent Lombardi in confusion.

Bernie wanted to remind him, but due to Supervisor Rosen's warning, he could only helplessly look away from Agent Lombardi.

Agent Lombardi nodded honestly.

Supervisor Rosen looked him up and down and asked, "How did you identify her?"

"The deceased you mentioned, " Supervisor Rosen looked down. "Annie Halleck! Annie Halleck is alive and well!"

Agent Lombardi was dumbfounded, looking at Theodore and Bernie in disbelief.

Theodore was once again lost in thought, completely detached from the situation, immersed in his own world. He didn't even notice what was happening in the office.

He was considering whether to submit directly to a psychology journal or to publish an article in an internal FBI publication first. He was already brainstorming the opening. The FBI had internally circulated manuals that published various cutting-edge forensic techniques, physical evidence technologies, and all sorts of other things.

Bernie spread his hands in a helpless gesture.

He'd thought of this problem during the report and had been trying to minimize Agent Lombardi's 'role.' However, Supervisor Rosen was experienced. Having been a leader for so many years, he knew perfectly well when his subordinates were trying to avoid the important and dwell on the trivial.

Supervisor Rosen didn't scold or yell.

He asked solicitously if Agent Lombardi was feeling unwell and if he needed to go to the hospital to have his eyes checked. Only after Agent Lombardi repeatedly denied it did he wave his hand and dismiss him.

Before he left, he also reminded him, "Don't mistake the person you're tracking in your case for a dead person."

Agent Lombardi left dejectedly.

Supervisor Rosen looked at the other two in the office, still not satisfied.

Theodore had already begun conceiving the structure of his article.

Supervisor Rosen's mouth twitched twice, and his gaze turned to Bernie.

Bernie continued his report.

After the report concluded, Supervisor Rosen tapped his fingers on the desk. After a moment of silence, he asked, "What about the killer? What are your thoughts on the killer?"

Bernie looked at Theodore.

Supervisor Rosen also looked at Theodore.

Theodore's article conception was interrupted. He stared at Supervisor Rosen for a moment.

He found that conceiving articles here with Supervisor Rosen was smoother than at home or in the office. In such a short time, he'd already finished conceiving the opening of the article and had time to start writing directly.

Supervisor Rosen felt Theodore's gaze was strange.

He raised his voice slightly and repeated the question.

Theodore fully came back to his senses.

He organized his thoughts. "The killer entered the room after the victim's last two clients, Cooper and Dennis, left. The killer broke the lamp in the room, smashed a wine bottle, and shattered the window to throw the victim out. The crime scene appeared very messy."

"The killer didn't use a condom when assaulting the victim. The killer's criminal act wasn't premeditated but rather impulsive, and it's highly likely he left fingerprints at the scene."

Supervisor Rosen asked him, "Do you believe the killer is among the seventeen fingerprints sent by the Third Precinct?"

Theodore nodded and continued his analysis. "Based on the scene situation and subsequent investigation results, I have the following conclusions about the killer."

Bernie quickly pulled out his notebook, ready to record.

This movement caught Supervisor Rosen's attention.

Theodore said, "The killer is a white male. Riverside Hotel primarily accommodates white guests. Other people of color entering and exiting would easily attract the attention of hotel staff."

"The killer's age is between twenty-five and thirty-five, with a medium or strong build. Being able to control the victim alone, commit the assault, and then throw the victim out the window requires a certain level of physical strength. Robert Miller's type clearly couldn't accomplish this."

"The killer may have grown up in a single-parent family, living with his mother, or he may live alone."

"The killer holds prejudice against women and often makes discriminatory or even insulting remarks in daily life."

"The killer is single, or was previously married but is now divorced."

"The killer isn't good at handling interpersonal relationships, especially with the opposite sex."

"The killer can't control his emotions and often lashes out at those around him over inexplicable things at work or in life."

Supervisor Rosen looked at Bernie again.

Bernie had finished recording, put his notebook in his pocket, and his expression was normal.

Supervisor Rosen felt puzzled, suspecting that perhaps he was the only one in the room who hadn't understood.

He thought carefully for a few seconds but still couldn't understand how Theodore had arrived at these conclusions. The first few items with explanations were understandable, but the latter ones became completely absurd, sounding as if they were randomly made up.

Theodore actually had even more content that sounded like random fabrications that he hadn't spoken. Those were judgments made entirely based on experience. He believed that this was a formal profiling release and should be rigorous, so he'd held back that purely empirical analysis.

After a brief silence, Supervisor Rosen asked about the direction of their next investigation.

Theodore had already produced the criminal profile. The next step was to narrow down the range of suspects and compare them one by one.

He thought for a moment and decided to start with the Riverside Hotel staff, while also waiting for the results of the fingerprint comparison from the FBI Laboratory.

He hoped the FBI Laboratory could produce results quickly, preferably by the time he went to the laboratory later.

Supervisor Rosen didn't provide any guidance or interference with their investigation. After listening to the report, he dismissed them.

Stepping out of the supervisor's office, Theodore looked back with considerable regret.

He reminded Bernie, "We should come here often to report on our work from now on."

Bernie didn't know what he was thinking, but reporting frequently to Supervisor Rosen was always fine, so he nodded in agreement.
