Chapter 14 - Like A Ghost

The convoy trucks and fueling truck arrives at Kinsmen with Zep using his convoy truck to block the entrance. At the fueling depot, the group exit their vehicles, unable to find a single soul.

Kyle: Woody, I thought you said this town would be occupied.

Woody: It should. I heard on the radio that it was busy. Where is everyone?

Jake: No one abandons a fueling depot unless for a good reason.

Kyle: All right. Let's keep an eye out for hostiles....or worse...we might have to get out fast.

Woody walks over to the gas pump.

Woody: Shit! They shut down the main pump!

Jake: hmm...hey!

Jake looks down at a pipeline leading into town.

Jake: Looks like the controls lead down this pipeline. We follow the pipeline. We find the fuel controls.

Kyle: let's follow it.

Kyle turns to Caleb and Woody.

Kyle: Caleb. Woody. You guys stay here and guard the trucks with Zep while we check out the town.

Kyle, Jake, Sarah and Cassandra walk into the town of Kinsmen.

Sarah: Hello! Anyone here?! We just want some fuel!

Cassandra: When's the last time were here, Jake?

Jake: Eight years ago. Keera wanted us to live here. She thought would be safe. Her family's buried near the church.....I wanted to bury her here too, but....I guess you can't always get what you want.

The four investigate further into town, unable to find a single soul.

Kyle: Where the hell is everybody?

The group stops at one of the pipelines as a charge is spotted.

Cassandra: Everybody stop!

Sarah: What?!

Cassandra points to the bomb.

Cassandra: That.

Kyle: What the?

Cassandra: It's a bomb. Someone rigged the damn pipeline.

Kyle: hmm...what is that on that bomb?

A motion sensor starts on the bomb, preparing a countdown.

Sarah: does that thing have a motion sensor?!

Kyle: Who cares?! If it blows, we'll loose the pipeline and the fuel!

Kyle turns off the bomb.

Kyle: Huh...

Jake: What?

Kyle: that was too easy.

Sarah: No signs of violence, bandits.....or Condemned.

The group walks up to the staircase where another bomb is placed and begins to countdown.

Cassandra: there's another charge.

Jake: Someone's tryin to blow this pump up for a reason.

Kyle turns off the bomb.

Kyle: Someone's eager to blow something up.

Suddenly, a gunshot misses Kyle, hitting the wall.

Sarah: Holy shit!

Kyle: Take cover!

The group takes cover behind a wall as an old man is aiming a rifle at the group.

Kyle: Hey. Check fire, goddammit! We're not infected! We're not Blood Hogs either!

Old Man: Stay away from those goddamned charges!

Kyle: Are you the one who rigged the pipeline? What the hell are you thinking?!

Old Man: I'm thinking I don't want to turn! That's what I think!

Jake: Whoa, wait...what? What do you mean "turn"?

Old Man: what the hell do you think, you stupid silly little kid?! It's some kind of sickness! People started to fight. And Killing. Turning crazy. I'll be damned if I'm going to die just like that. I'll slit my own throat before I let that happen.

Kyle: You should come with us. We could help you.

Old Man: No! I don't want your help! Get away!

The Crazy Old Man runs away in fear as Cassandra yells to him.

Cassandra: hey! Wait! We need to know where you've laid charges!

Jake: well, that was entertaining and a bit disturbing.

Cassandra: Whatever sickness he was talking about, I hope it's not transferred through air.

Kyle: I'm pretty sure we would've known if it were transferred through air by now.

Cassandra: Just saying.

Kyle, Jake, Sarah and Cassandra attempt to track down the old man. While tracking him down, Kyle notices the ruins of Union City in the distance.

Kyle: Union City....

Jake: What's left of it...

Sarah: Can't imagine what all those people there were doing with their families when Ryder launched that machine.

Cassandra: We stopped it though.....

Kyle: You think they might have a fueling depot in case it doesn't work here?

Jake: Kyle, wasn't the whole damn city of Union City destroyed by a radioactive energy beam?

Kyle: Yes, smart-ass, but it's been five years and radiation tends to die down after quite some time....in theory.

Sarah: I think he's right. The radiation from that beam could've died down by now because it's not from a missile...some people might have gone back after the blast.

Jake: It's debatable, but let's try to find that crazy guy.

The crazy old man hides in a building, but flees once he notices Kyle, Jake, Sarah and Cassandra.

Cassandra: Hey, we're friendly! Don't run! We're good guys!

Sarah: Where is he going?

Jake: Maybe all the people are hiding from his crazy ass.

Kyle, Jake, Sarah and Cassandra reach the entrance leading to the sewer system of Kinsmen, where they hear an inhuman shuttering noise.

Sarah: Anyone besides me hear that noise? I mean from the water drain.

Kyle: Stay alert.....could be survivors.

The four locate the dead body of the crazy old man along with radioactive fluid smears.

Sarah: Oh my god. It's that crazy bastard, but what killed him?

Kyle: It sure as hell was not a sickness.....

Sarah: What's radioactive fluid doing on him?

Kyle: Okay, it's too small of a system down here to stay together. Jake, Cassandra, go left. Sarah, you stick with me.

Jake and Cassandra check the upper side of the sewer system while Kyle and Sarah check the lower grounds, locating an apparent human survivor. Kyle cautiously approaches the survivor.

Kyle: Ma'am. Are you okay? Who did this? What happened here?

The human survivor turns her head, revealing to be a Krens human.

Kyle: What the hell?!

Cassandra: She's a fucking Krens! It spreads to humans!

Jake: Shoot it! It's not human!

The Krens human attacks, but is quickly gunned down by Kyle and Sarah, alerting a pack of Krens humans hiding in the sewer system.

Cassandra: Shit! She wasn't alone!

Sarah: They're everywhere!

Kyle, Jake, Sarah and Cassandra regroup and fight off the Krens survivors, eventually finishing them off.

Sarah: I don't understand! How the hell can humans turn into Krens?! It only effects Condemned.

Kyle: Yeah, well, looks like the radioactive fluid's getting strong enough to affect humans too.

Kyle talks into his radio.

Kyle: Woody, you there? We got a problem. We got human Krens.

Woody speaks from Kyle's radio.

Woody: You fuckin shittin me, son?

Kyle: I really wish I was. We gotta get the hell outta here.

Woody: We gotta get that pump online first to fill the rig up first. I know we're in the shit, but without that fuel, we won't make it as far to tin buck two.

Kyle: Fuck...Don't worry. We'll take care of it.

Kyle, Jake, Sarah and Cassandra make to the center of Kinsmen.

Jake: Krens humans. Huh.....no wonder that old bastard wanted to blow up the place. Can't say I blame him.

Cassandra: Is this it? Is this humanity's extinction? Is that how we're all going to end up? Like them?

Kyle: No, we're not. Let's just follow this pump line and get the rig fueled.

Jake: my stupid ass idea to come here! Fuck! All because I-I'm sorry, Kyle.

Kyle:It's not your fault, Jake. None of us knew what we'd find, but now we know the whole human race can go extinct like this if we don't do something.

Kyle, Jake, Sarah and Cassandra approach Kinsmen city hall, before more Krens humans are heard.

Cassandra: We got more Krens!

Kyle: Oh, great.

Sarah looks up to notice a Kinsmen survivor waving his hand.

Sarh: Hey! Up there! A survivor!

Kingsmen Survivor: There's a machine gun down there! It's fully loaded!

Kyle notices a Valkyrie Machine gun and grabs it while Cassandra grabs the bullet loader. With supporting fire from Jake and Sarah, Kyle opens fire onto the attacking pack of Krens humans, while Cassandra loads bullets into the machine gun, gunning down the entire horde of Krens humans.

Kyle: That was fun.

The Kinsmen survivor kicks down a ladder to the survivors.

Kingsmen Survivor: Quick! Get in here!

In Charleston, Shawn, James, Marcus, Margaret, Maya and Jenny head through a busted gate when suddenly, a Condemned blows a horn and series of explosions occur from mortars that hit the mountain slide on their left.

James: What the fuck is he--?

Jenny: Oh, shit! Look out!

Shawn: Everyone move!

That service station at the bottom of the street!

Margaret: Go! Go!

The five sprint inside just in time to avoid the incoming landslide, narrowly making it into the service station.

Maya: Thank God none of us where A.O.W armor. It would've slowed us down. No offense, Marcus and Margaret.

Marcus: Well, at least we're not dead.

Shawn: Okay, Marcus, you want to explain why you suggested this place?

Marcus: Back during our A.O.W patrol, we came a map of where we can find a boat.....and some survivors....ran by Native Americans....they gotta be towards that rig there....they were stocked with weapons, supplies, men....just the type of firepower we need for this fight....we find them....we'll have a chance to give Kyle some real backup.
