Chapter 1 - The Shadow Inside

Everybody was born with magic in this world. When a baby was born, a small magic ball appeared near them. This ball showed the kind of magic they had inside. Some babies had fire magic and their ball glowed bright red like burning flames. Others had water magic and their ball shined blue like the ocean. Some had wind magic and their ball looked white like the clouds. Earth magic balls glowed brown like the soil, and light magic shined bright yellow like the sun. But some babies had no magic ball or the ball stayed dark and empty. These people was called magicless. They are very rare but they do exist. Coker was one of those magicless boys. From young, people laughed at him. They whispered and pointed fingers behind his back. They said his older brother Reko took all the magic from their parents and left none for him. Reko had wind magic just like their father. Their father was a famous hero who could fly fast and strike with strong winds. Their mother was a water mage and she trained her magic until her water became as sharp and cold as ice. Everyone thought Reko was amazing and said he would be one of the greatest Captains someday. But Coker was small and weak. His magic ball never glowed or moved. Many times he tried to show some magic but it never worked. His classmates teased him and called him useless and lazy. Kaien was the worst bully. He had fire magic and always made fun of Coker. Kaien was not brave enough to go outside the field with the Captains. He was too scared to face real demons. Instead, he stayed behind laughing and making fun of others. There was one person who believed in Coker though. Lira, a kind girl from their class, always smiled at him and said he was special. She said sometimes power comes from where no one expects. She was quiet but always there for Coker. Sometimes she would bring him food or quietly watch when Kaien tried to bully him. Coker never knew why she cared, but it made his heart feel warm. Three days before the big examination where the students show their magic skills, the eleven Captains prepared to fight the demons outside the field. The demons were growing stronger and threatening everyone. The Captains prepared carefully. They wore their battle gear and looked serious. Their faces were full of determination and strength. Coker watched from the side, hiding behind a big rock near the Carter portal. He wanted to prove he was not useless. He wanted to show the world he was brave. So, when the Captains walked through the glowing Carter portal, Coker sneaked behind them quietly. Because he had no magic, nobody noticed him. The Carter was a swirling gate of bright colors and strange sounds. When Coker passed through, the world turned upside down and shook his body. When he opened his eyes, he was in a strange place. The sky was dark red with smoke and ash. The ground was cracked and dry. He could hear loud noises from the battle nearby. The air smelled like fire and earth. The Captains were fighting many demons. The fire Captain burned demons with big flames. The water Captain called waves that crashed like a storm. The wind Captain flew fast and knocked demons down with strong air pushes. The earth Captain caused the ground to shake and break rocks on enemies. The light Captain flashed like lightning, blinding demons. The battle was loud and scary but Coker watched carefully. His heart was pounding fast. Suddenly, the ground shook more than before. From a crack in the earth, a huge black shadow rose slowly. It was taller than any demon or Captain. It moved silently, looking down at Coker with glowing red eyes. Coker felt a cold wave inside him. His legs wanted to run but his body was frozen. He tried to shout, but no sound came out. "Get away from here!" a Captain shouted, seeing Coker. The heroes turned angry and shouted, "Why are you here? Go back to the town!" One Captain laughed and said, "He is brave. The magicless boy comes to fight with us." The others were not happy and ready to protect the boy. Coker pointed at the big shadow. "Look! That's the demon!" he shouted. But when the Captains looked, there was nothing there. The shadow was gone. It had entered Coker's own shadow. Coker felt cold and weak. His legs stopped moving and he fell down. Everything went black. When he woke up later, he was different. He had a dark power inside him. He was the last shadow vessel. A boy with a special mission to fight the Demon King. This was only the beginning of his story. The story that would change the world forever.
