Chapter 3 - Chapter 2 - Central Spirit City

I woke up disoriented with a splitting headache. My body was numb, and I panicked as I struggled in vain to move. My eyelids rebelled against me and refused to open. I shuddered in the chilly breeze as I realized I was completely naked, except for my ring and necklaces. I laid in the dirt as I gradually regained control of my motor functions. I spent an eternity recollecting myself and pondering what just happened.

So let me get this straight. Two buff armored guys, who looked straight out of techno Lord of the Rings, just rudely interrupted my college football game and killed me. This must be a dream.

I didn't really care about the techno jackasses, what I really cared about was the fact that I was dead and had no idea where I was. I hadn't heard my, "Well done good and faithful servant", so I wasn't in Heaven. And there certainly was no, "Away from me, I never knew you", and I still felt the Holy Spirit's presence, so I knew I wasn't in Hell either.

What in the world is going on?

I regained the ability to open my eyes and what I saw failed to provide any answers. There was pitch black dirt as far as the eye could see, a starry night sky, and a few scattered, blackened, anemic trees. This told me that even though I had died, I was somehow still alive in some capacity.

And I was not going for it.

I grieved.

What the hell is going on? Why did this have to happen to me and why now? Why did I spend my life suffering so much? Why did things start going well for the first time in 7 years, only for it to be ruined in such an awful, atrocious, comical, and just downright disrespectful manner?

I stared into the black sky, "IS MY LIFE A JOKE TO YOU GOD?! WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?!"

My body shuddered as I curled into a ball.

I cried. I wept. I mourned. I bawled.

I let myself sink into the darkest pits of despair.

CRACK!

My pity party was spoiled by a noise nearby. I turned to face it and saw nothing.

I shook my fists, "Who the fuck is it? WHO IS IT?" I stood and shrieked out in a tearful rage, "I'll kill you! Show yourself you fucking coward! I SWEAR TO GOD, I'LL KILL YOU!"

Suddenly, a black spirit materialized right before my very eyes. Its bright green pupils illuminated the darkness, and it had a thick, awkward, contorted torso. Devil horns protruded from its skull, its legs were flowing wisps, its face was dreadful, and its cartoonishly thin arms flailed in the wind. It responded to my threat on its life by nodding, "Good."

"AHHHH!" I screamed as I immediately began a labored sprint away from its searing gaze. I stumbled over logs and swatted away tree branches as I meandered through a decrepit forest in hopes of escape. The spirit's smile widened as it maintained its pace and steadily gained on me.

As I gradually got used to moving again, I looked back and noticed I was putting a bit of distance between us. My eyes widened as I heard my roommate Micah's voice, "James!"

I turned, "Micah…"

The spirit was instantly upon me as its ghoulish hands swiftly lifted me from my feet.

"AHHHH! STOP!" I shouted as I writhed in agony.

My flesh disintegrated where its hands contacted my skin. Its touch stirred up my insides. A vile conglomerate of rage, envy, lust, sorrow, greed, pride, and every blasphemy surged within me, pressing through my skin, pinning desperately to escape. I inflated like a balloon and felt like my body was going to burst at the seams as my life force dwindled away. The spirit slowly lifted me higher and higher, looking on at me with a devilish, yet child-like grin. All I could do was suffer and die while my sins attempted to burst from my flesh as it stared at me with a toothless, joyful, almost admiring grin.

My vision faded. Why God…Why is this happening…

Suddenly, the spirit shuddered and its devilish grin shifted into a grimace of hatred. It spoke in a tone so vile, so reprehensible, that despite the excruciating pain, my body and soul were enveloped in terror, "It looks like I won't be able to make good on my promise. YET!"

It dissipated, dropping me to the ground as I trembled in fear. I writhed as the burns scorched my flesh. I heard footsteps approaching, but my mind was inundated with pain. The footfalls grew louder until boots were planted centimeters from my face. I looked up to see a bloodied man in a tattered suit of armor goofily smiling down at me. He was black like me and his bulging muscles surpassed even my own. His body was in peak human form, and we were about the same height. He was your prototypical Hall of Fame linebacker. I usually don't talk about men like this, but he had a beautiful set of shimmering crimson irises with a hint of green in their center that resembled a sun. He had a nice low-cut, and he was a good-looking dude. He wore a silver cross chain that resembled mine.

He gave me a thumbs up, "Hey there friend! Nice to meet you! I'm Milliard!"

"I'm J...jjj…jjames." I stuttered through my trembling.

His eyes went wide with wonder, "James! Such a cool name! Great to meet you!" He looked me up and down, "Do you need any assistance or are you good?"

His warm, comforting presence soothed my disease as I sat up, "Y…yeah, just give me a second."

He beamed at me with a white toothed grin, "No worries, take your time!"

Over the next few minutes, I composed myself and he helped me up. I felt reassured in his presence, "Where in the world are we?" I looked around at the nothingness surrounding us, "You know what. I don't care. Please just direct me to the nearest phone."

"These here are the Forsaken Realms." He said in a country accent as he spun around, making a wide, sweeping gesture with his arms, "I'm sure you've learned about them in World Class so there's no need for me to explain why there are no phones here." He stroked his chin hairs, "What I'm wondering is how in the world you got out here. Civilians haven't left the city for anything but trade since before I was born." He narrowed his eyes, "Also, I like your drip but it's pretty weird to be outside in the middle of nowhere butt naked." He leapt back and put up his fists, "You're not some kind of weird evil pervert, are you?!"

I face palmed. Forsaken realms? He has to be joking.

I stared at him through my fingers, "I don't know anything about forsaken realms and no, I'm not a pervert. I have no idea how I even got here so please just take me home immediately. I was at my football game and suddenly these two jackasses showed up and then I died and now I'm here and then that spirit came, and this…THIS IS JUST CRAZY!"

"Hmm, I see…Well, I'm glad to hear you're not a pervert! Come with me!" He said as he started walking way too fast. We made it a few paces before he froze. He slowly turned to face me, "Wait a second…did you say football? How do you know that word?"

"I've literally played it my entire life. What do you mean? How have you guys not heard of football in your forsaken realms? Is this an island or something?"

He chuckled at our surroundings, "There are certainly no football games being played in the forsaken realms. That's for sure." He pointed at my calves, "I should have known though, because why else would your calves be so huge! They're almost as voluptuous as mine!" He laughed, "But this is so cool! I thought I was the only one to ever cross to the other side!" He pinched his nose, "I hope you don't give me any weird diseases or anything from your world. If I come down with a cough, I'll know who to take vengeance on…"

I narrowed my eyes, "Are you trying to say I'm dirty or something? Because if so, I'll kick your ass…" My eyes widened, "Cross to the other…" I stifled my rage, "Wait a minute…so you're the one who ruined my fucking game and got me killed! You're the reason I'm walking around naked in this dusty ass forsaken shithole right now?!"

He nervously ran his hand through his hair, "Yeah, that was kind of my bad. I hope that game wasn't important or anything..." I clenched my fists as he tiptoed over and whispered in my ear, "Don't tell my dad I told you this because it's kind of top secret, but we've been getting strange energy readings in various spots around the country. My new friend that I fought at your game was reported to have traveled through a portal into your world and I've been tracking him ever since. I finally caught him, and we hit it off on the day of your game, but things got way further out of hand than I anticipated."

I stomped, "I don't give a damn! Take me home right now, before…"

He put a finger to my lips, "Shh! It's story time…"

Milliard began recollecting his first encounter with Gray. This is an accurate and succinct retelling that I found out much later.

Gray stood in a high rise several miles away from the stadium. He looked out a window, and funneled Spirit Energy into a tool that allowed him to magnify his vision to analyze members of the crowd.

Milliard stood behind him, "You know, if you wanted some tickets to the game, I could have gotten you box seats."

Gray's eyes widened. He swiftly dropped his tool, drew his blade, extended it toward Milliard, and launched a beam of dark energy. Milliard deflected it and the impact from the collision with his blade shattered the glass in the entire building. Gray leapt out the window and darted from shadow to shadow across the night sky. Milliard activated his suit as rocket boosters slid open from his wrists, ankles, and back. He leapt out of the building and soared through the air at supersonic speeds after Gray.

CLANG!

Milliard drew his blade, and their swords crashed against each other, sending a metallic boom through the city. They battled across the night sky until they crashed down onto the 50-yard line of my football game.

"...AND THEN OUR SWORDS WENT CRASH! AND THERE WAS A BOOM! AND THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED!" Milliard said as he threw his arms up. He longingly stared into the distance, "Man, those were good times."

I blinked rapidly. This guy is even dumber than Micah!

I took a deep breath, "I have no idea what to say to that…"

He smiled, "It's alright! I regularly astound my fiancée and squad mates with my incredible storytelling skills, so you're not the only one…"

I stomped, "Except that I don't care! Where is the nearest door or portal back to my world…" My heart sank, "...I…I'm sure my family is just on the other side waiting for me to come home…"

He looked away, "I'm sure they are too. The bad news is that I have no idea how to cross back into your world again." He held up a small sphere, "My little brother made the device that transported me there and back, but it was busted in the fight with my new pal Gray. I was barely able to get it to work for myself, or otherwise I would be stuck over in your world as we speak." He gave a thumbs up, "I'm sure he can fix it though, and we'll send you back in no time! As long as my dad is okay with everything that is!" He whispered into my ear again, "Don't tell him I told you but…he has anger issues."

Relief washed over me, "Awesome, I have to get back as soon as possible. That game that you idiots interrupted was super important." I covered my face, "I'm sure they're working on rescheduling it now…and I'm missing practice…dammit…This is just a disaster!" I glanced at him, "By the way, who is this dad that you keep talking about?"

"His name is Milliard Basilas Iliaktida VI! It's where I get my charming name and even more charming personality from! You're actually about to meet him!" He paused and cuffed his eyes as he looked intently into the distance.

I turned my attention to the direction he was squinting and saw nothing. Maybe I need to find someone else because this dude is just…

He gave me a thumbs up, "Perfect! We are just about in range. Hang on tight" he said as he grabbed me like a sack of potatoes. Before I could protest, my senses were completely overwhelmed. The world turned into a blur of colors and my mind went blank as it was completely devastated. My stomach lurched like I was on a rollercoaster, and I blacked out.

Before James passed out, Milliard grabbed him by the waist and hoisted him over his shoulder like a toddler. Their bodies dematerialized into a beam of light, and they zipped into a far-off mirror stationed on the wall of a large city.

Milliard sighed as they soared through the air, "Man. It feels good to be back."

Nightfall was giving way, and the rising sun illuminated the grand city as its radiance painted the glass buildings with an orange glaze. He elegantly glided across the sky, into one reflection, and out the next. He watched the students shuffle into their academies and was filled with joy as he reminisced about his days as a young student. Kalios would love this sunrise! I can't wait to see his shining smile again! I wonder if he's strong enough to melt sand yet…He was always mad saying stuff like, "How dare you defy me!" He's so silly.

The crowds of civilians gave him a standing ovation as he zipped across the city, "It's Milliard!", "He's back!", "The GOAT has returned!", "Marry me!", "Is he carrying a pervert?", "He must have apprehended him!", "Great job you beautiful black king!"

Milliard smiled and waved as he rocketed through the city. He looked to his right and saw large, ruined districts that were drenched in darkness. He swallowed, turned away from them, and turned toward the palace. He accelerated, zipping and maneuvering faster than the eye could see until he rematerialized inside the throne room of the palace. A group of royals in fine attire sat around a U-shaped table.

"Good morning, everyone! I'm HOOOME!" Milliard joyfully cried out as he dropped James on the ground.

The impact of hitting the glass roused James in a daze. He vomited and passed out again. A collective gasp rose from the royals, and they murmured amongst themselves, "How dare he interrupt this meeting.", "Why has the boy brought a pervert into the palace?!", "Clearly Basilas' boy has gone mad…", "And I thought his other son was dreadful…"

King Basilas rose from a distinguished seat and raced over to Milliard. He desperately embraced him, "I thank God that you are home my son! I was almost overcome with worry! What has happened to you?! Who was able to harm you in this way?!"

A flaming, pristine blade sat on the wall above the throne. Its heat grew in intensity and raged. A young man who stood near the throne stormed out of the room. The royals turned their attention to the blade and then back to the conversation at hand.

Milliard smiled as blood leaked onto the ground from every extremity, "Don't worry father! It's just a scratch! You should see the other guy!" He gestured wildly, "We had an epic battle. I caught him and we fought in the air like, WHOOSH, and we crashed down, and our swords went BANG, and then we…"

"This is a meeting of the National Council; we will have time for a full mission debrief another time." A pompous voice called out from the roundtable.

Another voice rang out, "And a more important question, who is this vile, unkempt deviant that you have brought before us on this day, boy."

Milliard stood at attention, "I extend an apology to the entirety of the council, sir! Upon my return I should have checked to see if a council meeting was occurring before entering the throne room, sir! The boy I have brought with me today is my new friend James, sir! He is enjoying a visit from the other side, sir!"

The council members swiftly flipped the table and cowered behind it.

"You brought a foreigner, HERE?", "We don't know what kinds of diseases, or strange powers he may have!", "For all we know, he could kill us all where we stand before even you could stop him, foolish boy!" "His calves are extremely repugnant as well.", "I want him executed at once!" Voices called out from behind the table.

Milliard saluted, "With all due respect, sir! I admire the dedication necessary to develop such refined calves, sir! James is a close friend, and he has given me no reason to suspect him, sir! Please allow us to be inspected and treated, sir!"

A head poked up from behind the table, "Absolutely not! For all we know that boy could be an affiliate of the interloper you were sent to track! This is an unprecedented situation, and we must act swiftly before…"

The king rose to his full height, flipping his bright red cape in the breeze, "Councilman Branch; If my son says he trusts this…vile, vile, boy, then he is worthy of our trust as well." He glanced at James and his stomach turned, "Everyone in this room can sense the reprehensible energy emanating from him. We need to research this phenomenon to ensure the safety and progress of this kingdom." He turned to Milliard, "Archigos, take the boy to Research and Development so that your brother can inspect him. After that ensure you are both treated. Post. Haste."

Milliard winked, "Sir, yes sir." He tossed James over his shoulder and instantly dematerialized.

A councilman pounded the table, "Basilas, you fool! How dare you speak out against this council! You put the entire nation's security at risk! This should have been a joint decision and if you weren't so very necessary I would…"

Basilas retook his seat, "Chairman Branch. He who controls the Kai Fos, controls this council..." He glared, "He who controls Milliard, controls this nation. Don't make me remind you of that fact again."

The council stewed in rage and shock at the king's words as soldiers raced to fix the roundtable.

Basilas smiled. Oh, my goodness, that was incredible! I can't believe I just stood up to the council! This is the best day ever! I can't wait to tell my wife and kids when I get home!

James

I grimaced in my sleep as I was tormented by nightmares. I dreamt of the best game of my early collegiate football career during my sophomore year against South East Miami State University. They were one of the top teams in the nation, and I completely went off. I was dominant from start to finish and I racked up an incredible stat line. My performance helped keep us in the game, and I remember feeling my confidence surge as the game went on. For the first time, I realized I could really play with the big dogs of college football. I realized that I belonged here.

Afterward, my position coach raved about me in front of the rest of the team, despite the fact that we lost. On the way to the buses, I ran into him, "Hey coach! I know we didn't get the outcome we were looking for today, but what you said was really encouraging."

"Of course! I didn't know you could play like that! You have a bright future." He gestured to a professional league scout walking nearby, "You played a good game man. I've heard you want to make it to the league and I'm gonna help you get to where you're trying to go. We just keep working."

I was ecstatic for the rest of the weekend as I celebrated with my parents and Micah for the first time.

Until I walked into the meeting room on Monday for film study.

I had been demoted out of the playing rotation. To make matters worse, my position coach had gone out of his way to get an offensive player to switch to defense and given him my position on the depth chart.

After the meeting I approached him, "Hey coach, I saw you moved me down on the depth chart and I was just wondering why. I thought you said I played a good ga…"

He scowled, "Look son, I moved you down because you're un-coachable! You're fucking lazy and your discipline is shit! You have a long way to go if you ever expect to accomplish a fucking thing in this fucking program! You're a fucking…"

I was utterly shocked as he continued to deliver the most savage beratement I had ever seen or experienced. His words from the locker room reverberated through my mind, "You played a good game. You played a good game. You played a good game. You played a good game. You played a good game. You played a good game. You played a good game. You played a good game. You played a good game…"

Before that moment, I thought I always had a great relationship with my defensive line coach. I had no idea where this was coming from. I'm not the type of person who gets emotional often, especially in front of other people, but when I do, the floodgates usually spill open. I was overwhelmed by surprise and despair. I burst into tears as my coach mercilessly berated me.

"… and you're just completely un-coachable. How about that! Go take that up! Fucking sit and ponder over that shit!"

Silence filled the room.

"A…alright." I sobbed.

I despondently shuffled out of the room.

Something dark was born inside me that day.

I woke up dazed and angry as my naked body was pressed against hard, frigid iron. I shoved down the remnants of my dream and blinked rapidly as I took in my surroundings. I was in some kind of laboratory, and I was held down by metallic restraints in a steel chair. There were more than fifty straps across my body, and I couldn't move a muscle if I tried. Do they think I'm superman or something?

On the other side of a glass wall, Milliard was waving his arms dramatically at a super skinny guy. He was so skinny that he would have no shot on the football field and would certainly have to stick to a sport like golf or chess. He was plain looking and seemed like the type of person who would easily get overlooked unless he had a very strong personality. He was completely ignoring Milliard's animated protests until one of Milliard's arms hit something on the console and I heard his voice, "Akri come on! He doesn't deserve to be treated like this…" He saw me react, "Oh hey James! Can you hear me?"

"Yeah, and I would like to know what the hell is going on here!"

Milliard began speaking with hand signals and cartoonish gestures like we didn't both speak the same language, "This is my b-r-o-t-h-e-r Akri, A-k-r-i. He is going to run some tests on you, t-e-s-t-s…".

"Why are you talking like that?! We were literally just speaking English before we got here!"

"Oh right!" He paused, "B-u-t s-t-i-l-l Akri says that you're d-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s and that we have to run some tests on you, d-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s, t-e-s-t-s. I-d-o-n-'t b-e-l-i-e-v-e h-i-m, b-u-t -I- h-a-v-e n-o c-h-o-i-c-e…"

Akri scowled, "Shut your mouth oaf! That is quite enough! I can speak for myself, thank you!" He scowled at me, "Look here boy, as the idiot they claim I am related to was explaining, we are here to run some tests to make sure you are not a threat to us. You have some kind of strange spiritual phenomenon occurring within you and these tests will divulge its meaning."

"Y'all are gonna stop calling me boy like that!" I snapped. I cleared my throat, "But alright, that's fine. I was never going to resist though. Do we have to do it with all of these restraints and stuff? This is a bit excessive…"

"The tests will not be painful, and you will be asleep for most of them. There is one that could cause your body to react, and I don't want you to hurt yourself without anyone in the room to assist you."

"Alright fine, I'm getting tired of sleeping, but wake me up when it's over."

Before I could generate my next thought, a wave of energy washed over me, and I lost consciousness.

Akri rolled his eyes, "He's insufferable. Now that the tests have begun, you can leave too oaf. I'll inform you once the process is completed..."

He flailed as Milliard pulled him close, "Nah! I think I'll stay and watch over him! Besides, this gives me a chance to chat it up with my favorite little brother! Am I right?!"

Akri shoved him away, "You are incalculably false. I have no regard for you, so get out now before…"

Milliard slapped his knee as he burst into laughter, "HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! Good one Akri! You almost had me that time!" He turned to face James, "But for real, I just want to make sure everything goes well with his testing. I can tell from the distress in his Spirit Energy that he's been through a lot recently. I want to be there for him as much as I can."

Akri discreetly pressed a button underneath the computer console, "I will ensure that the testing goes smoothly. I believe your fiancé has discovered your return and was seeking you for wedding planning activities."

Milliard face palmed, "Now I'm definitely gonna take my time! All that stuff is her domain. It's mind numbing and pointless! There's no action in that at all!" He pulled Akri close, "But anyway, we don't get to hang out enough little bro! Tell me, how has your love life been recently? I heard Cara is single…"

Akri got up and walked away as a mirror on the wall shifted to face them. A young woman's face appeared in the reflection. She spoke in a sweet, gentle tone, "Hello? Milliard? Are you there?"

Milliard waved, "Hey sweet thing! I just got back to the kingdom. I have a few things to finish up and then I'll…"

"I'm so glad you're back baby! But we are so behind. There's so much work to do if we want the wedding done after graduation in a few months…"

"Oh really, well I..."

"Actually, I need you to come back home right now so we can get back to it. It'll be fun! We can pick the flowers and the cake, and the playlist is super important too…"

"Well, you see. I was injured in battle, and I still need to…"

"YOU'RE GOING TO BE MORE INJURED IF YOU DON'T GET TO THE PALACE RIGHT NOW! I KNOW YOU'RE PROBABLY JUST GOOFING AROUND OR TRAINING! YOU'RE ALREADY SO STRONG THAT NOBODY COULD EVER BEAT YOU, BUT YOU STILL SPEND ALL DAY LIFTING WEIGHTS AND NO TIME WITH ME! GET OVER HERE THIS INSTANT OR I'LL…"

Milliard raced out of the room, "COMING MY LOVE!"

Akri smirked as the door slammed behind him. That's what you get MILLIARD. Soon, everyone will see you for what you really are.

He swiftly typed a sequence on his console and a secondary screen appeared in the glass separating the two rooms. The screen held James' vitals, and various gauges.

"No specialist ability. But what could one expect from someone as dull as he is."

A 3D model of James rose from the screen and Akri examined it. Interesting, his calf size appears to be extremely disproportionate to his body. So much so that it could be detrimental to his health…It also appears that his soul is very unstable, almost as if it is waging war against itself… He shrugged. Oh well, I could attempt to remedy this for him but as of now I have absolutely no reason to. I should check one more thing...

He channeled his Spirit energy into the console and a new display appeared. He typed a password into the panel and a new set of information appeared. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THIS?! He snickered. Yes, this will suit our plans very nicely.

He typed another sequence, and a large syringe descended from the ceiling. It pierced James in the gut and began extracting a dark, viscous substance. Akri stared in awe. INCREDIBLE! Its potency is off of the charts! This is a class of its own! It completely outclasses brother's sample, and I was certain his was one of a kind!

The amorphous substance quickly filled the syringe and swirled inside of it.

What is this?

CRASH!

The substance broke free from the syringe and expanded, shattering the glass barrier between the two rooms. A pair of green eyes appeared in the black goo as Akri ducked below the console.

BOOM!

Dark energy spiraled into a tempest as it erupted and destroyed the lab.

Milliard returned to the laboratory, "Phew! Am I glad that's finally over! I'll never understand why women care so much about decorations and venues." He saw that James was not in the examination room, "Uhh, where's James?"

Akri was slumped in a chair, staring despondently at his empty desk.

Suddenly, a sinister presence struck Milliard's heart with fear. What the hell? I can't remember the last time I was afraid. He quickly examined the pristine laboratory. What is this dark aura? It's even stronger than that Green-Eyed Spirit's… He glanced at Akri and noticed a bead of sweat falling from his brow. Akri is nearly as strong as I am and he's completely self-assured. I have never once seen him sweat.

Milliard placed a hand on his blade handle, "Where is James! I won't ask again!"

Akri couldn't meet his eye, "James…is…"

Milliard felt the malevolent aura shift inside a door across the room. His senses were on fire and his skin felt like it was being pierced by needles. The brothers trembled as the area was enveloped in an unearthly malice. My life is actually…in danger…. Fear gripped Milliard's heart. I…I can't move…

He took a deep breath as he steeled his resolve. If I don't act now, I…I'm dead! He took up a battle stance and prepared for the fight of his life. If I give my life protecting my kingdom then so be it! I'll unleash everything I have!

Milliard was enveloped in a blazing crimson energy, "LIGHT CRAFT, ESOTERIC ART…"

"…changing." Akri said.

Time seemed to stop as the bathroom door crept open. Milliard vanished, reappearing with a blade cocked, aimed at James' neck. In a fraction of a second, Milliard felt the aura dissipate. He sighed in relief as he lowered his blade. He let his momentum carry him and he crashed into James.

"OUCH! What the hell is wrong with you! Get off me! I don't sway that way, and I don't like being touched by dudes when I'm naked!" James protested as he pushed Milliard off him.

Milliard wiped the sweat from his brow as the crimson aura vanished, "I'm glad to see that you are alright James."

"Of course, I am, it was just a routine checkup! Why are you acting like this? We just met!"

Milliard spoke sternly, "I assume all went well with the testing, Akri?"

Akri waved his hand dismissively, "Yes, yes, everything was fine. Other than his nakedness, unruly haircut, and stupidity, he carries no diseases that will be harmful to our people. No specialist abilities to report either."

James pointed at him, "You had better watch your mouth before I…"

Milliard perked up and clapped James on the back, "Aww don't be disappointed James! I don't have any specialist abilities either! We can be boring bros together!"

James glared at him as he picked himself up off the floor, "Specialist? What are you talking…"

"What about the strange phenomenon with his soul that father mentioned?" Milliard asked.

"His soul appears to be unstable but there is nothing that can be done about it at this time. Maybe the principal can weigh in on this when he returns from his pointless expedition."

Milliard smiled, "Aww, don't be like that! I'm sure he'll find something this time!" He faced the doorway, "Alright thanks Akri, you're the best! Come on James, let's get you to the hospital so we can be ready once the council finishes!"

"Is anyone going to answer my damn questions?!" James raged. He grabbed a pair of shorts, "Just let me get dressed and we can…"

"THERE'S NO TIME!" Milliard picked him up, threw him over his shoulder and sprinted out of the laboratory.

The moment Milliard's foot crossed the doorway, a wave of green energy washed over the lab. As it passed over each object, its damaged state was revealed. Akri's face was swollen and badly bruised. He sat in fury, pain, and dismay, alone in his flaming, demolished laboratory.

James pounded Milliard's back as he darted through hallways, "Put me down! How in the world are you even this strong? I weigh like 300 pounds!"

"You're too slow, and you ask too many questions! We will have plenty of time to talk once we get to the hospital!" Milliard said as he beamed them through a mirror. James passed out.

They zipped through the hospital doors in a beam of light and skidded to a halt in the lobby. James regained consciousness and vomited violently.

A receptionist gasped, "Oh my goodness, Milliard! What happened to you?! I have never seen you this beat up!" She funneled Spirit Energy into a small device, "We have a code gold! Archigos, plus one injured pervert!"

Two soldiers burst through a set of double doors as they grabbed James and Milliard.

He gave them a thumbs up, "Hey friends! It's great to see you…"

SLAM!

The soldiers tossed them onto a pair of hospital beds, lifted them off the ground, and zoomed through the double doors.

James

I woke up and I was being swarmed by nurses in a hospital. Thankfully, I was fully clothed for once. They were treating the dark wounds on my arms where that spirit grabbed me. I hadn't noticed, but the skin in those spots was completely burned and withered. In all the commotion I had been numb to the sensation, but once I saw the wounds, they throbbed with searing pain. Milliard was in a bed next to mine and the nurses were treating similar wounds on the right side of his body. I was about to air my grievances with that bastard when my stomach was overwhelmed by nausea. I vomited everywhere, again.

The nurses stared at me in disgust, "Ugh, the pervert is awake.", "I was hoping he was gone for good…", "I'm glad Milliard captured him, but why do we have to treat him…"

Milliard wiped his brow, "James! I'm glad you're with us buddy! I thought we might have lost you for good there!"

I glared, "What the hell are you talking about?!" I turned to the nurses, "And I am not a pervert! Why do people keep…" I sighed, "You know what, never mind, I don't even care anymore. Are you finally going to give me some answers, Milliard?"

He gave me a damn thumbs up, "Sure! We have plenty of time while we get treated. I'm an open book!"

"Finally. Now first, where in the world are we? What country are we currently in?"

"You are in a hospital in the capital of the Union of Tribal Nations. Central Spirit City, or CSS for short."

"Ok, I guess…but what continent is this? Asia? Africa? Europe?"

Milliard glanced at the nurses, "I don't know what you mean. We all live on one giant landmass, except for the Flame and Ocean Tribes of course." He winked.

I rolled my eyes, "Alright fine, I really don't care about any of that anyway. What did your brother say about the device that can send me home?"

"Yeah, about that…He said the device is done for. It could take him years to design another one. But don't worry, now you get to hang out with me and I'm sure you'll make a lot of other great friends…"

I stood as my heart sank, "YEARS?!"

Everyone around us stopped to spectate. After an awkward pause, I sat back down, and they resumed working. They murmured spitefully, "How dare he speak to the Archigos like that…", "He must be from the slums…", "Anyone else would know to show some respect…", "I hate him even more than I already did…"

I cleared my throat and whispered, "Years, Milliard. What the hell do you mean years? I have a playoff game NEXT WEEK!".

"Relax, relax. You didn't let me finish bro!" He said smoothly, "Before I forget, Akri also said something about the condition of your spirit being unstable, but I have no idea what he was going on about. Anyway, the principal of the academy should know how to help you though. He's our nation's top scholar and he pretty much knows everything. It'll probably take him like five minutes to figure out how to send you home..."

"Awesome! When can I see him?"

Milliard chuckled nervously, "That's…the thing…He's kind of on a dangerous excursion in the northeastern jungles to find a long-lost tribe and we have no idea whether or not he will make it back alive!"

My heart plunged even further.

Milliard rolled his eyes, "I wanted to go with him, but my dad said no. Otherwise, I'm sure we probably would have been back by now. He was exploring near the Wind Tribe, and I visit there every day. I wonder if three truckloads of roses will be enough this time…"

"I don't care. When is he supposed to be back?"

"Before he left, he said…" Milliard spoke in a stuffy, educated voice, "…If I am not back by the end of the school year, consider me long dead. If my remains are found, donate my body to SCIENCE!" He cleared his throat, "So…yeah, I would assume if he isn't back by like, May…He's probably dead..."

My heart thudded as it hit the bottom of my gut. My mind spiraled as I was hit by the gravity of the situation. So let me get this straight. I am stuck in some alternate dimension with virtually no hopes of escape. My dreams, gone. My career, gone. My family, gone. My friends, gone…

He gave me a, fucking, thumbs up, "Hey, stop that. Everything is gonna be alright. It will just be a few months, and you'll get to experience a new place and meet some great people. Then you'll be on your way back and you can get on with your life. No bad vibes around here!"

I sobbed as I was overcome with fervent, passionate fury. Darkness flashed in my eyes and black energy swirled around me, "Yeah, whatever! You're not the one who had everything they worked for their entire lives unjustly whisked away! AGAIN! I gave up everything for a chance to play professionally, have a family, and leave a legacy that would make my father proud! Now it's gone…YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I HAVE SACRIFICED!"

Milliard stood and crimson energy spiraled around him, "You know what James? You're right. And what I am about to tell you will probably make you even more furious. I haven't sacrificed a single thing. I don't know what you have been through, but I haven't been through anything at all. I was adopted by the king of the entire world. I've had everything I could have ever wanted and more. I've only eaten the finest diets. I've had personalized training built to maximize my strengths and eradicate my weaknesses. I received the finest education from the best academy in the world. I worked hard and I have become the strongest warrior this world has ever known. I AM THE LIGHT ARCHIGOS! I HAVE NEVER ONCE TASTED DEFEAT!"

FWOOSH!

The swirling energy became a tempest, "…And despite all of that, it would all be worthless if I was not where God wanted me to be. If I was not accomplishing the purpose He has set for my life, it would all have been a waste of time. We are called to serve wherever we find ourselves according to God's will. I don't know how you got here, or why we ran into each other out there, but I know that it has only happened because God allowed it." He clutched his silver cross necklace, "I saw those chains you're wearing. I hope that they mean something to you and are more than just a fashion statement."

A dark aura erupted around me that raged against his, "WHAT'S YOUR POINT, YOUR HIGHNESS! YOU DON'T HAVE A FUCKING CLUE ABOUT MY LIFE!"

His energy expanded and raged, blowing papers off desks as it decimated the hospital room, "The point is that if God allowed this to happen to you, you should take advantage of it. Every setback is an opportunity! Use this one to be a positive influence on others that you may have never met otherwise. Use it as an opportunity to broaden your horizons, so that you can be better equipped to serve the people God has placed in your life. Use it as a chance to get some of those positive experiences I feel in your soul that you desperately crave." He gestured to the nurses cowering behind the counters, "All of these people in this hospital have seen you, and what are they supposed to think of your behavior? You've shown yourself to be nothing but an entitled, whiny brat! Your feelings are valid, but this is not how believers are supposed to act! If those chains mean anything to you, pick yourself up and be who Christ made you to be! Reflect God and reflect greatness! And remember that you are always someone else's light. Your radiance can either help them grow towards who they are supposed to be, or your poor example will lead them further from it".

His words sliced me to my core, and I was flooded with conviction. He's right. I was deluged in guilt and shame. I'm so, so angry. But Milliard isn't the person I'm angry with. I felt terrible for displacing my emotions onto him. I was indignant because in almost every category of my life things had been reduced to shit as a result of events that had nothing to do with me, were not my fault, and there was not a damn thing I could do about it. My pity party is wholly justified in my eyes, and I am completely ok with it. I sighed. Despite that, the truth of his words remains. Wallowing and arguing with the only person who gives a damn about me here isn't going to get me any closer to fixing things.

I looked up and did my best to smile through the tears, "You know what, almost everything you said about yourself are the things I hate the most…" I extended a hand, "And yet, I really like you, Milliard. Thank you."

His swirling energy dissipated as he took mine, "I really like you too James. I'm sorry I had to get all serious there for a second. I can't stand seeing people in despair. It's my life's mission to spread as much joy and hope as I can until I'm gone." He punched me on the shoulder and smiled, "Can't save em' all though!"

"That's probably the last thing I thought I would hear come out of your mouth. Mr. 'I've never once tasted defeat.'" I laughed. "But anyway, it looks like I'll probably be staying here for a while so I guess I might as well get to know about this crazy place." I raised an eyebrow, "One thing that I have been utterly confused about since I got here is how Christianity exists in this world too. Like do you guys know Jesus and go to church and all of that?"

He saluted the sky for some reason, "Of course! It wouldn't be Christianity if it wasn't for my dawg big JC! But I don't really know how to answer that question because it was surprising for me to see you wearing those chains as well. I'll have to do some research on the similarities between our worlds once I get past the next set of traps Akri sets for whenever I try to visit his office, but Christianity is the standard here. Every tribe is run by an Archigos whose job is to maintain the nation's Chrisitan values, though some do that better than others…" He looked distressed, "I'd say this is another question that we can both ask the principal when he returns because thinking about it makes my head hurt."

What the hell is going on between him and his brother?

"Alright, I guess. Hopefully you guys do the whole Christian thing better than we do it on my side. But I guess it's rude that I haven't asked anything about you yet. Do you have any siblings that don't try to kill you?"

"Absolutely! I have two siblings, my brother Akri who you just met, and my other brother Epios who is generally much more agreeable!" A smile crept onto his face, "You might have seen him in the throne room as you choked on your own vomit!" He slapped his knee as he doubled over in laughter, "Damn that was hilarious! I mean who does that? I thought your intestines were coming up next…" I narrowed my eyes at him, and he cleared his throat, "But anyway, they are my pride and joy. I would gladly give my own life for their sakes.''

"Ha. Ha. Ha. I'm so amused. I didn't see your other brother in the throne room, but I hope he's less of a dick than Akri. He seemed like a very pleasant individual." I mocked as I channeled my inner Benjamin.

For the first time Milliard slumped into his seat a little bit, "He has been acting as though he resents me for some reason recently. I don't know if it is…teenage angst as they call it, or if I have done something to truly upset him. It seems like no matter what I do I can't get through to him."

"I'm sorry about that. I can unfortunately relate. The good news is that I'm pretty sure it's just angst because my seventeen-year-old brother is the same way. I'm sure it will pass. I'm happy if I get a greeting from my brother once per week!" I laughed.

"That comforts me. Hopefully he can grow out of it so we can joke and laugh like we used to. Epios is much more expressive and assertive than Akri is. A bit too much at times…but he will one day grow into a fine warrior and a man who is respected by all."

"I look forward to meeting him. Speaking of which, what exactly is it that you 'warriors' fight. If there is anything dangerous going on here, you need to let me know so I can steer clear."

He flexed and started excitedly monologuing in a superhero voice for some reason, "YOU AMUSE ME, JAMES! THAT IS NOT THE WARRIOR SPIRIT! COMBAT IS A PRIVILEGE THAT ALLOWS US TO SHOW OFF THE SKILL WE HAVE SPENT OUR LIVES CULTIVATING! IT IS ALSO A GREAT EMOTIONAL OUTLET, AND IT BRINGS OUR NATION TOGETHER! I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEXT FALL'S TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS! I MAY HAVE BEEN BANNED FROM COMPETING DUE TO DISCRIMINATION, BUT I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH MY COMRADES AND THE NEXT GENERATION TAKE CENTER STAGE! IT WILL BE RIVETING TO SEE WHO WILL EARN THE RIGHT TO BECOME THE NEXT ARCHIGOS!"

"That's our Archigos!", "He's always inspiring the next generation!", "He's so hot when he shouts like that…" The nurses cheered.

I sighed. Why do people keep yelling at me even though I'm right in front of them?

"That's cool and all but you never answered my question. As a fellow black man, you should know why I'm asking this! Are there any dangerous things that I need to be aware of? I'm not trying to die again!"

He stopped flexing, "Oh, right. There are a multitude of dangerous things in this world. Spirits can appear and attack anytime based on a variety of factors. In most cases they manifest as an embodiment of the predominant negative emotion residing within the people who live in a certain area. Here we deal with a lot of lust, apathy, greed and gluttony spirits, but our security system is so advanced they generally are killed instantly upon conception inside the walls. If a Pride Spirit forms, I have to come take it down and they can be quite the handful. The spirits outside can't get in because of the technology in the walls though." He spoke far too casually for me, "There are also terrorists, underworld gangs, cults, and raging feminist assassins, in some of the other tribes, but you don't really need to worry about them. They're all too scared of me to show their faces here. I could explain more, but I'm sure you'll learn all that you need to on your first day of class tomorrow."

"Class? What exactly do you mean by class?"

He started flexing and shouting again, "CLASS MEANS CLASS AT THE PRESTIGIOUS PRISM ACADEMY! MY FUTURE ALMA MATTER! YOU HAVE TOO MANY QUESTIONS SO I'M GOING TO ASK MY FATHER IF WE CAN GET YOU ENROLLED ON THE DOUBLE!"

I narrowed my eyes, "I have a lot of questions because I just got here moron. And I ain't going to no school. I was just finishing up my twenty years of school in my world and you want me to start over? Hell no! I was a month away from getting a PHD! Do you how long that takes…"

"FEAR NOT! I'M SURE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO RESUME YOUR EDUCATION AT YOUR CURRENT LEVEL ONCE YOU TAKE A FEW REMEDIAL COURSES ON THE SIDE TO CATCH YOU UP ON THE IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF OUR WORLD!"

"Why do you get so excited about school and fighting? Where I'm from, those are two things to be avoided like the plague."

"EDUCATION AND COMBAT ARE THE PILLARS OF OUR SOCIETY! THEY ARE CRITICAL TO ANY YOUTH'S UPBRINGING!"

"Why do you people keep calling me a youth and boy? You and your brother can't be that much older than me?"

"I AM 24 YEARS OLD, JAMES. HOW OLD ARE YOU?!"

"He's in the prime of life…", "That's marrying age if you ask me", "I wonder if I can face swap with his fiancé…" The nurses said.

"Could you cut it with the screaming already! And besides, we're the same age, so quit speaking to me like some kid!"

"WOW! IT IS APPALLING THAT WE ARE THE SAME AGE GIVEN HOW WEAK YOU ARE! YOU CAN'T EVEN HOLD YOUR LUNCH DURING A SIMPLE MIRROR DASH! YOUR MUSCLES, CHARACTER AND CONSTITUTION ARE INCREDIBLY UNDERDEVELOPED!"

"What the hell do you mean weak?! If we are talking strength, I am the strongest on my team by far! I bench pressed 500 pounds as a junior. I'm the strongest player in the country! And if we are talking character, I'm the most moral person on my team! I run a weekly Bible study for my teammates. I mentor and train a lot of them as well. I have an incredible moral compass…"

"CHILDSPLAY! THESE ARE FEATS THAT I ACCOMPLISHED IN MY YOUTH! HERE'S MY LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS!"

Our conversation raged until our treatment was completed and we left the hospital.

"There's just no way that you did all that stuff! You became the nation's top warrior when you were 12? You bench pressed 500 pounds when you were 15? These are preposterous claims!" I shouted.

"It's all true. I give all the credit to God for the way I was raised. That's what allowed me to accomplish those things." I was sick of seeing his damn thumbs up, "But don't get me wrong, your accomplishments would be outstanding in this world too. I was just joking around. Most so-called high achievers are only impressive on the surface. I can tell that it runs deeper with you."

His praise surprisingly meant a lot to me, "Thanks. But if I'm just a whiny entitled brat, why do you think you see so much good in me?" I sighed, "I haven't accomplished anything of note..."

He put a hand on my shoulder, "I can tell you've been through a lot. Whether the circumstances were as bad as you think, or if the trials were more mental than they were severe, they are real to you, and I can tell they have had a significant effect on your wellbeing. I would love to hear about your experiences and support you in any way I can."

"I appreciate that, but the tragic story of my life is a tale for another day. We would certainly run out of daylight."

He laughed, "That's probably true. But come along now. It's time to beam to the palace."

I stepped away, "Hell no! We aint doing that again! I would like to keep the few intestines that I have left inside of my body please and thank you! And besides, now that we're alone you owe me answers to the questions you didn't want to answer in front of the nurses. Like who was that guy that you were fighting? For someone who is supposed to be the 'ultimate warrior' he certainly put a number on you."

Milliard burst into laughter, "Not even close! Like I said, you should have seen what he looked like afterwards!" He stared into the sunset, "I really didn't get serious until the end, and he certainly had to push past his limits to try and even keep up. I was just having fun sparring against a competitor who was at least in the same solar system as me. It's been years since I felt the rush of a real battle." He smiled, "I could tell that he had a kind spirit as well. Hopefully he will grow into a great Archigos one day."

"I can relate to wanting a challenge in your craft. I run circles around my teammates at practice every day. I don't know about the kind spirited part though. He looked evil as hell to me. Who exactly was he?"

He gestured toward the shadows behind a nearby building, "For the sake of national security, you cannot speak these words to any other. There are certain things we just don't discuss here. You never know who could be watching." He covered his mouth, "I believe he is a part of a terrorist group who has recently become emboldened by our nation's lack of solidarity. He has been caught making numerous trips between worlds over the past several months. I was a part of the one-man strike team tasked at investigating their operation and capturing him for questioning. My plans were thwarted at the last moment by a spirit that resembled the one who assaulted you."

Milliard told me the story of the end of their battle. This is the most accurate retelling I could derive from his gibberish and baby talk.

Gray broke through a stalemate in the battle as he decimated Milliard with two decisive slashes that shattered Milliard's chest armor. Milliard wavered and relief surged within Gray.

Suddenly, Milliard lowered himself into a battle stance and smiled. "Playtime's over. Light Craft, Progress Art 1, Righteous Ire!" His body took on an immaculate, golden glow and he rocketed toward Gray at unparalleled speeds.

SLICE! SLICE! SLICE! SLICE! SLICE! SLICE! SLICE!

He masterfully executed a rapid cacophony of 20 consecutive slashes. Each strike tore through Gray's armor and left him mutilated. Milliard readied the 21st, final, lethal blow when he felt a sinister presence.

CRASH!

Before he could react, he was smacked by an unseen force and sent through the stands. He looked up and saw the Green-Eyed Spirit. It stood defensively between Gray and Milliard.

Milliard noticed his Spirit Energy had been sapped, and he felt a burning sensation along the right side of his body. His flesh had deteriorated and was blackening as infection spread. I've never seen a spirit like that before. Its Spirit Energy is off the charts, and I can't move my right arm anymore. I've wasted too much energy messing around, and I can't get home if I burn out the rest on an Esoteric Art. He glanced at the spirit. And that thing looks like bad news; my best bet is to scare it away.

Milliard gave the spirit a thumbs up, "You're a quick one. I can't remember the last time I was genuinely caught off guard." He stood tall and smiled, "…but I could do this all day." He pointed at Gray's limp, disfigured body, "Let's see how tough you are, I hope you'll be a little stronger than that guy who needs life support over there." He shrugged, "Who knows, maybe you'll even force me to break out the Prism Blade for the first time."

The spirit spoke in a sinister, distorted tone, "Shut your mouth filth! I should deliver you to the grave for what you have done to my brother, but father has granted the privilege of taking your life to another for now. Consider yourself honored." He pointed a long, mangled finger, "Let it be known that if you ever cross my path again, I will snuff your light OUT!" The spirit collected Gray and faded into the darkness.

Milliard mocked, "And then he said, if you ever cross my path again, I will snuff your light OUT! He's so dramatic. But anyway, he went WHOOOOSH, and they both disappeared. The end."

I face palmed. One area that he is not undefeated in is the art of storytelling.

I sighed, "Ok, but why did that spirit attack me? It seemed like it knew me or something. It kept smiling at me and it called out to me in my friend's voice when I was about to get away."

"Really? That is quite interesting. That will be good information to add to my debrief." He paused and nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders, "But to answer your question, I have no idea. I've never seen a spirit quite like that one before. All I know is it is certainly quite dangerous. I'm not even sure if any of the other Archigos could defeat that thing. It certainly had the third most sinister presence I've ever experienced…"

"What kind of spirit had the first?"

He glanced at me and then looked away, "I unfortunately can't speak on that at this time."

"Aww, are you holding out on me? What's wrong? Did a spirit get the big bad Archigos scared...What even is an Archigos?"

He shuddered, "Yes…it did. Never once have I felt so helpless in my entire life. Its power was completely overwhelming, even to me. I had no place facing off against it…and I'm not sure if I ever will. If it had not disappeared when it did…I would be a dead man right now."

His words chilled me to the bone. "Hey man, I'm sorry for teasing you…I…"

He stared blankly into the street ahead, "No, it's fine. I hate to end things on a sour note but there are other important matters I must attend to. There will be plenty of time for questions. For now, let's head to the palace."

Before I could react, I was in the air, over his shoulder and we were beaming to the palace. I was able to stay awake a bit longer before passing out this time.

I woke up naked on the cold hard ground once again. I wish Milliard would learn to put the bodies that he snatches into chairs.

It was pitch black outside the palace windows. The warm radiance from a super cool sword hanging on the wall was the only source of light. We were in that throne room again except this time it was just us and the king. I saw the other pompous pricks filing out of the room. Once again, my stomach gave way, and I regurgitated the apple sauce and crackers I had just been fed at the hospital. I will never let this happen again!

The king was on the shorter side, but his muscles were still well defined. He could probably end up playing slot receiver or something. He looked to be in his fifties, and he sat with a frustrated expression on the throne.

"But what exactly would you have me do with the boy, Milliard? The other council members want him imprisoned and studied until further notice. We don't know what dangers are related to his presence here. It is more than enough that the strange spirit seems to be targeting him…"

"Father, at all costs that cannot happen! I should not have to explain to you why this is cruel and inhumane! The boy did not come here of his own volition, and he has no way of returning home! Why should he be treated as a lab experiment in a foreign land?"

I was intimidated by the sheer presence of the two individuals in this heated debate. The wind whipped and I could feel some kind of energy pooling around the throne room. I want to advocate for myself but if I open my mouth I might die!

"His feelings and well-being are not my concern. If this mysterious terrorist group is targeting him then his very presence brings danger to us all. We should find out why, utilize this advantage for ourselves and dispose of the remains so our enemies cannot use him for whatever sinister plot they have in mind."

"No! That's just wrong and you know it, father! Has this kingdom lost its way? Are we in such fear of these terrorists, whose lives I could snuff out in a single breath, that we would give up our morals and murder an innocent bystander?"

Milliard's energy became a tempest swirling around the room and I had to hold onto a pillar to remain in one place. Suddenly, the king's energy rose to overtake Milliard's and the pressure emanating from their auras was overwhelming. I couldn't see a thing due to the radiance they exuded as the yellow and crimson currents illuminated the palace. My pores felt like they were being set ablaze as the cyclone of energy swept me off my feet.

The king's voice rose in intensity, "I will not be intimidated by your aura boy! Your power may be great, but you are MY seed! You may very well be able to snuff out our enemies, but we have no knowledge of what kinds of powers they wield, or what kinds of maniacal schemes that they may be laying. If you keep filling your head with such delusions, they may very well be able to catch one such as yourself off guard, boy! We cannot take care of every stray dog you bring to us!''

Out of fear for my life I spoke out, "Umm, excuse me can I say something…"

Somehow, they both heard me and the fear I had before was immediately washed away. A primal, animalistic terror arose in me as their glowing eyes shifted. I could feel the malevolence of their gaze's land on me and the sensation was so intense I felt as if I could have withered and perished from their attention alone. I shrunk my presence as much as possible, hoping, praying for their terrible sight to fall away from me.

They returned to their discussion. "That will never happen father! James is only here because of my inability to get the job done! I swear on my honor I will not fail again! I will take full responsibility and custody for the boy. He should be enrolled in Prism Academy immediately and given a chance to live as normal of a life here as possible until we can send him home! I won't accept anything less!"

"This is not a negotiation, and you will make no demands of me boy! What exactly would you do if he is sent home, and he makes his world aware of our presence here? Your might cannot solve that issue! Your skill cannot remedy that catastrophe! The immeasurable risk posed by setting him free is not outweighed by your childish desire to give this boy that you don't even know a good life. Who knows how many lives will be lost if he unleashes his strange abilities?" He shook his head, "I know you miss Kalios, but I refuse to put the billions of lives under my authority at risk so you can have another friend to make a playdate with! I love you too much to allow you to make such an errant and foolhardy mistake my son."

Milliard's energy magnified and radiated like the sun. It took the form of a raging lion as it completely enveloped and overwhelmed his father's energy, "IF YOU LOVE ME THEN LISTEN TO WHAT I AM TELLING YOU! HEAR ME AND HEAR ME WELL, BECAUSE I WON'T ASK AGAIN! THIS IS WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS! WHATEVER HAPPENS TO THIS KINGDOM BECAUSE OF THIS BOY'S PRESENCE IS A CONSEQUENCE OF MY ACTIONS! PUT IT ON MY HEAD, BECAUSE I CAN TAKE IT! IT'S MY FAULT AND MY FAULT ALONE THAT HE IS HERE! AND IT IS MY FAULT ALONE THAT HE'S NOT AT HOME!" His voice broke as tears streamed down his face, "It's my fault that he's not with his family… It's my fault he can no longer seek the dreams he has worked for and craves with his entire soul." He balled his fists, "Anyone who steps to lay a hand on this boy will be dealt with by me and I promise to bring retribution on their heads a thousand-fold!" His eyes blazed with crimson fire, "He deserves justice, and I will be their judge, jury, and executioner. This is the final time I will petition you father. Please…let this boy have a chance to live a decent life".

Silence filled the room.

The king smiled, "Very well, my son. I shall grant your request. But let it be known that you will take responsibility for all his actions. Along with their consequences."

Milliard bowed as his energy slowly dissipated, "Thank you father. This is the right decision for our kingdom."

"Let us hope you are correct."

The king stepped down from his throne and they shared an embrace. "I love you, my son."

"I love you too, father."

"You are to maintain full custody of the boy. He will be enrolled in the Prism Academy upon the morrow." He glanced at me, "Now take him to his new lodgings and complete your debrief with the other Five Star Generals." He glared at my nakedness, "And remove his detestable presence from my sight before I end his meager life myself."

I'll let that one slide.

Milliard smiled, "Yes father. Perhaps when I return, we can discuss an anger management course for you to enroll in."

The king chuckled, "Kings do not partake in courses, young one. A king without a great wrath to strike fear into the hearts of his enemies, is a king unfit to rule."

Milliard gave him a thumbs up, "We certainly have different philosophies in that regard, father. It will be a shame when your furious tirades come to a close after I become king." Milliard said as he approached my awestruck body on the floor.

The king gave a beaming smile, "Words cannot express how much I look forward to that day my son."

Milliard extended a hand, "Come on. We will take the stairs this time."
