Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

I watched out the window as we drove past rolling hills, thick forests, and small towns dotting the landscape. The sun was setting on the horizon and soon darkness filled the sky.

As we approached our destination, I noticed an oppressive feeling in the air. A chill ran down my spine as I looked around at the deserted streets. We eventually reached a crossroads and Balthazar took a left turn, following a dark alley that seemed to go on forever.

We arrived in the town later that day and headed straight to our contact's office. As we entered, a middle-aged man with a greying beard greeted us. "Ah, Balthazar, it's good to see you again." he said, his voice gruff.

"What can you tell us about the paranormal activity in this town?" Balthazar asked, getting straight to the point.

The man sighed heavily before answering. "It's been getting worse in the past few weeks. People have been experiencing strange occurrences in their homes, like objects moving by themselves and shadowy figures lurking in the corners."

My skin crawled as I imagined the horrors that lay ahead. "Do you have any leads on what could be causing this?" I asked, eager to get to the bottom of things.

The man hesitated before responding. "There have been rumors of a cult practicing dark magic in the old abandoned church on the outskirts of town. They're said to be summoning some kind of demon, but no one knows for sure."

Balthazar raised an eyebrow at the mention of a demon. "A demon, you say? This just got a lot more interesting. Have you seen any physical evidence of the paranormal activity?" Balthazar asked, his voice calm and collected.

John nodded. "We've gathered some strange footage from security cameras around town. It's mostly blurred, but it's enough to make out some of the strange figures that have been spotted moving around late at night. There have also been some reports of unexplained deaths in the area." John trailed off, his expression grim.

Balthazar nodded thoughtfully, stroking his beard. "We'll need to take a look at that footage. And we should pay a visit to this abandoned church as well."

John nodded, leading us towards the basement. We followed him down a long staircase until we were standing in front of an old metal door. John unlocked it and we stepped into a room filled with monitors, displaying various security footage from around town.

As I looked around, I couldn't help but marvel at the old footage. In one of the monitors, an eerie figure could be seen lurking in a dark alleyway. Another showed strange symbols being drawn on walls and floors near abandoned buildings.

These images made me uneasy but also filled me with a sense of curiosity about what other secrets this small town held within its darkness. We watched for hours as more evidence appeared on screen, shadows moving through closed doors and people fleeing from unseen figures that gave chase through darkened streets and alleys.

With every new scene, a wave of dread would wash over me, but even so, I was captivated by the strange occurrences that appeared on screen. Eventually, after hours of searching, we found what we were looking for: an old video footage from the outside of an abandoned church.

We watched in awe as a tall figure emerged from the entrance before vanishing into thin air just seconds later. Balthazar immediately identified it as some kind of demonic entity and turned to us with a determined look on his face.

"We must investigate this church," he said firmly. "It's clear that something sinister is happening there."

I nodded in agreement, even though my nerves were starting to get the best of me. Balthazar led us out of the basement, and we made our way to the abandoned church on the outskirts of town.

As we approached, I could feel a sense of foreboding in the pit of my stomach. The church was old and dilapidated, with broken windows and overgrown vines creeping up the walls. Balthazar pushed open the heavy wooden doors, and we stepped inside.

The air was thick with an oppressive silence, broken only by the sound of our footsteps echoing off the stone walls. As we made our way further into the church, I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. Something about this place felt... wrong.

We eventually came to a large room at the center of the church. In the center of the room was a pentagram drawn in what looked like blood, surrounded by candles that flickered in an unseen wind.

Balthazar approached the pentagram, and I followed closely behind him, my eyes scanning the room for any sign of danger.

As we neared the pentagram, a chill ran down my spine. I couldn't help but feel like we were intruding on something we shouldn't be seeing. Balthazar, on the other hand, seemed undaunted by the eerie atmosphere.

He examined the symbols and markings on the ground with a look of intense concentration on his face.

After a few moments, Balthazar spoke, his voice low and serious. "This is definitely a summoning ritual. And it looks like they were successful in calling forth a demon."

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my nerves in check. "What do we do now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"We need to break the summoning," Balthazar replied firmly. "We'll need to destroy the pentagram and the candles. That should weaken the demon enough for us to banish it back to its own realm."

I nodded, steeling myself for what was to come. We quickly set to work, breaking the candles and smudging the symbols on the ground. As we did, I could feel the air around us grow heavy and oppressive, like a weight was pressing down on me from all sides.

"Where do you think the demon went?" I asked as we finished breaking the last of the candles. Balthazar shook his head, his eyes scanning the room for any sign of the demon's presence.

"It's hard to say," he replied, his voice low and serious.

"But we need to be prepared in case it decides to make an appearance."

Just as Balthazar finished his sentence, the temperature in the room dropped drastically. I could see my breath as I exhaled, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. Suddenly, a low growling noise filled the room, and I could feel the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

"Get ready," Balthazar whispered, his hand reaching for the silver amulet around his neck. I followed suit, gripping my own amulet tightly as we waited for the demon to reveal itself.

The growling grew louder, and I could feel the room trembling around us. As it stepped closer to us,

What appeared before us was nothing like what I had expected. Instead of a horrifying creature, a small, cuddly animal stepped out from the shadows. It looked like a mix between a rabbit and fox, with long ears, beady eyes and soft fur. I couldn't help but feel my heart melt at the sight of it. This was not the demon I had been expecting.

I had to do a double take. Instead of the horrifying beast I had been expecting, a cute and cuddly creature, like a bunny, emerged from the shadows. It hopped towards us, its eyes shining. I saw it a small, cute creature with long ears and soft fur like that of a bunny. It had sharp claws and glowing eyes, but it didn't look nearly as terrifying as I had expected. In fact, it almost looked... cute.

Balthazar stepped forward, his face set in determination. "We must banish you back to your realm," he intoned firmly. The demon seemed to consider this for a moment before hopping back a few steps, as if it were trying to get away.

Balthazar stepped forward again, and the creature shrank away from him. Balthazar stepped forward cautiously, his hand still resting on his amulet. He moved slowly towards the creature, speaking to it softly in a language I didn't recognize. The creature seemed to understand him, though; it blinked its eyes and hopped closer to Balthazar, rubbing its head against his leg as if it wanted to be petted.

Balthazar reached down and gave the creature a gentle scratch behind its ears, smiling in spite of himself. I watched in amazement as Balthazar interacted with the creature.

I had been prepared for something terrifying, something that would make my heart race and my palms sweat. Instead, I was witnessing something almost... wholesome. As Balthazar continued to pet the creature, I couldn't help but ask, "What is it?"

"It's a Kitsune. A type of fox demon."

I stood there completely dumbfounded, staring at the Kitsune. I had heard of demons before, but never had I imagined one to be so... cute. Balthazar noticed my confusion and gave me a knowing smile. "Don't let their appearance fool you. Kitsune can be quite mischievous and dangerous if provoked."

The Kitsune seemed to have taken a liking to Balthazar, following him around like a lost puppy. It nuzzled against him, and he scratched it behind the ears. "What do we do with it?" I asked.

Balthazar sighed. "Unfortunately, we cannot let it stay here. Kitsune are known to cause havoc when left to their own devices."

As he spoke, the Kitsune let out a low whine, as if it understood what he was saying. Balthazar patted its head, trying to comfort it. "Don't worry, little one. We'll find a way to send you home."

I watched as Balthazar pulled out a small book from his bag and began flipping through the pages. He muttered to himself as he read, occasionally stopping to stroke the Kitsune's fur.

"You haven't been causing these villagers' disappearances, have you?" Balthazar asked the Kitsune, who shook its head in response.

"That's good to know," Balthazar said with a nod. "I think I know someone who can help us with this little guy."

"Who?" I asked.

"An old friend of mine. She's a witch who specializes in demonology. She'll know how to send the Kitsune back to where it came from."

Balthazar closed the book and put it back into his bag. "But first, we must find out who did all this. Fluffy here saw his chance to slip through, but we still need to find out what these crazies brought through in the first place."

We ventured further into the village, the Kitsune trailing behind us. The streets were eerily quiet, devoid of any signs of life. The only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the cawing of crows in the distance. Balthazar and I kept our eyes peeled for any clues as to what had happened here.

Suddenly, the Kitsune perked up its ears and let out a low growl. It darted off into an alleyway, and we followed close behind. We turned a corner and found ourselves face to face with a grotesque creature. It had the body of a man, but its face was twisted and deformed, with large, bulging eyes and a gaping maw filled with razor-sharp teeth. Its skin was a sickly shade of green, and it was covered in slimy, writhing tentacles.

Balthazar stepped forward, his hand going to the hilt of his sword. "What manner of demon are you?" he demanded.

The creature let out a hissing laugh. "A mere servant of my master," it spat, its voice a low, guttural growl.

"Who is your master?" I asked, my hand going to the gun at my side.

The creature sneered. "As if I would tell you," it said, its tentacles writhing in anticipation. "You'll never be able to defeat him. He's too powerful."

Balthazar stepped forward, his sword at the ready. "We'll see about that," he said, his voice firm and resolute.

The creature let out a high-pitched shriek and lunged at us, its tentacles whipping through the air. Balthazar first his shotgun and rock salt sprayed the creature, causing it to writhe and screech in pain. I aimed my gun and fired a couple of shots at the creature.

The bullets hit the creature, causing it to let out a guttural scream, but it didn't stop it from attacking. It lunged at us again, its tentacles flailing wildly. I dodged and weaved, trying to avoid being hit, but one of the tentacles caught me, wrapping around my leg and squeezing tight. I gritted my teeth and aimed my gun at the creature's head, pulling the trigger. The bullet hit its mark, and the creature let out a final, pained wail before collapsing to the ground, its tentacles writhing spasmodically.

Balthazar rushed to my side, helping me to my feet. "Are you alright?" he asked, concern etched on his face.

"I'm fine," I replied, rubbing my leg where the tentacle had squeezed it. "What the hell was that thing?"

"That, my boy, was a Shoggoth," Balthazar said gravely. "A creature of immense power and intelligence, created by an ancient race of beings known as the Elder Things. They were once used as a servant race, but they turned on their masters and now roam the universe, feeding and reproducing at an alarming rate."

I shuddered at the thought of facing more of those creatures. Balthazar wiped his sword clean and sheathed it. "We have to be more careful from now on. The shoggoths are one of the most dangerous creatures we have ever faced. If we're not careful, we might not make it out alive."

I nodded in agreement, my heart still racing from the adrenaline. "What can we do to stop them?"

Balthazar stroked his beard, lost in thought. "There isn't a surefire way to kill them, but we can weaken them by using certain spells and weapons. We need to be prepared and have a plan before we face them again."

As we walked back to our van, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The shoggoths were just the tip of the iceberg. There were more dangerous creatures out there, lurking in the shadows. And it was up to us to stop them.

The paranormal pest removal business was never easy, but it was never boring either. I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else. The world of the paranormal was vast and ever-changing, and I was just a small part of it. I needed to be vigilant and constantly aware of my surroundings if I wanted to survive.

As we reached the van, Balthazar looked at me with a serious expression. "We need to be extra careful from now on, Brian."

I nodded in agreement, my mind racing with all the possibilities of what could be out there. "What's our next move?" I asked.

Balthazar sighed, his eyes gazing into the distance. "We need to rest and regroup. I have some research to do, and we need to stock up on supplies."

The Fluffy scrambled in the back door of the van and Balthazar slammed the door shut. We drove back to the city, the van's engine humming along as we made our way through the streets. Balthazar was deep in thought, his brow furrowed as he contemplated our next move. But our new Kitsune friend, Fluffy, didn't seem bothered as it snored loudly from its chosen bed on the dashboard.

After what felt like hours, we finally arrived back at our headquarters. Balthazar led me into the basement, where we kept all of our equipment. He began rummaging through the shelves, pulling out various potions and weapons.

"Why don't you go home and get some sleep, kid we should head out early tomorrow."

The Kitsune plopped down heavily on the couch and began cleaning her fur while Balthazar continued to prepare for our next mission. I decided to take his advice and head home, but I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep. My mind was still reeling from our encounter with the shoggoths and the thought of more dangerous creatures out there.
