Lars spoke again, repeating the name as though he were trying to come to terms with what he had just said.
"Abraham Meyer."
Amelia didn't know what to say. She watched him carefully, noticing how his expression had changed. Lars had been calm enough during their conversation, but now there was something different in his eyes, something she couldn't quite identify.
Lars turned toward her.
"But before I do that, I need to visit someone. Someone who's in danger if the Meyerns find out I'm still alive."
Amelia frowned.
"Who?"
Lars hesitated briefly before answering.
"There's a saying among the Meyerns: if you don't finish the job, the Meyerns finish you."
He paused, looking down at the floor.
"Within the mafia, failing to complete an assignment isn't an option. It doesn't matter why you failed or what went wrong. If you don't get the job done, they'll make you pay for it. And they won't stop with you. They'll torture your entire family, too."
