Facing the relentless haze, the massive Dragonite narrowed its eyes.
It had fought countless battles, but this, this opponent was unlike any it had encountered.
From its maw, a blinding, white-hot beam of energy began to condense, roaring to life with terrifying force.
"Hyper Beam!" Sam recognized the move instantly.
The blast tore forward, shaking the very air.
When the beam struck the haze, it was like a blade slicing into a sheet of dark fabric, tearing it apart without hesitation.
The explosion rattled the island, leaving behind a massive crater.
Dust and debris rained down as the ground trembled under the force.
Dragonite's wide eyes scanned the battlefield, searching for Darkrai's figure.
But before it could lock on, the haze swirled back together, reforming into Darkrai's shadowy silhouette as if nothing had happened.
A jet of pure black energy shot out from the haze in response.
"Awrrr!" Dragonite roared, refusing to falter.
In an instant, it gathered energy once more and unleashed a Dragon Pulse to meet the incoming Dark Pulse.
The collision erupted in another explosion, shockwaves tearing through the air.
Yet no matter how fierce Dragonite's attacks were, the haze, Darkrai's shield, reformed again and again, leaving the dragon visibly frustrated.
Its deep roar echoed across the island, filled with both anger and defiance.
Dragon energy surged wildly from its body, boiling like water in a storm.
With a deafening roar, Dragonite raised its aura to the peak.
Above, countless blazing orbs of energy appeared, swirling together like falling stars.
Sam's eyes widened.
"Draco Meteor…"
The ground cracked as he braced himself, leaping aside to avoid the incoming storm.
One after another, the meteors rained down, each crash shaking the earth and blasting the haze apart.
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Each impact lit up the battlefield in fire and smoke, as Dragonite unleashed its fury without restraint.
The entire island shook violently, as if it might collapse under the bombardment.
If a few more attacks of that scale landed, Sam feared the island itself might sink.
The haze covering the battlefield tore apart under the constant explosions.
For the first time, the black veil looked fragile, like cloth shredded by too many blades.
Craters pockmarked the ground where meteors had slammed down, smoke rising from every direction.
But Darkrai was nowhere to be seen.
Dragonite's instincts screamed.
Something was wrong.
The dragon's eyes darted around the battlefield, its body tense despite its exhaustion.
"Darkrai, use Dark Void!" Sam's sharp command cut through the chaos.
A hiss echoed from the shadows.
From behind Dragonite, Darkrai's form emerged, its body wrapped in a sinister aura.
A swirling black void expanded above Dragonite's back, writhing with otherworldly energy.
From within, dozens of shadowy hands clawed outward.
Dragonite roared, trying to dodge, but its body was slow, worn down after using Hyper Beam and Draco Meteor in quick succession.
The hands grabbed hold.
Dragonite's cry echoed across the island before its eyes grew heavy.
Its massive body lost control, dragged into the abyss of sleep.
With a thunderous crash, the dragon slammed into the ground, earth trembling beneath its weight.
Sam's eyes flashed.
"Now, Darkrai, use Dream Eater!"
"Hissss!" Darkrai screeched, its claws glowing with a dark, eerie light.
It pressed its attack, siphoning Dragonite's very dreams.
Wisps of pale energy, like starlight, leaked from the fallen dragon's body, flowing directly into Darkrai's form.
The shadow Pokémon shuddered as its strength surged back, replenished in an instant.
The wounds it carried from the earlier attacks vanished, its aura growing darker and sharper.
But Dragonite wasn't finished yet.
Within seconds, its willpower fought back, breaking through the forced slumber.
With a groggy roar, its eyes snapped open.
Yet the battle was already decided.
The once-mighty dragon's body sagged, its energy completely drained by Darkrai's nightmare-fueled attack.
No matter how it tried, it had nothing left to give.
"Awrrr…" Dragonite roared weakly, then tilted its head back.
With a final cry that echoed through the sky, it conceded the battle.
