Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: THE PRICE TO PAY TO LIVE

The aftermath.

As Lauren opened her eyes, the echoes of her transformation still lingered, leaving her in pain. Her body ached, but this time, it wasn't unbearable. It felt like something had numbed her hurt. Instead, an overwhelming strength washed over her.

Lauren walked towards the mirror to see herself fully. She noticed she looked different. Not a bad different, but one full of vibrance and awe. Her body exuded power, and her eyes were alive; they didn't look dull anymore. Something powerful shimmered in them.

Still looking at the mirror, Lauren placed her hands on her chest, where her wolf once felt alive, but there was nothing—not exactly nothing, just not awake yet.

Lauren was still in a daze when a knock interrupted her. A maid entered and quickly lowered her head and eyes. She handed Lauren her clothes and told her that the Alpha wanted her downstairs.

Before the maid left, Lauren noticed how she trembled in fear. Confusion filled Lauren; she hadn't done anything to make the maid nervous. She wondered, "Maybe it's the fear of Michael. It can't be because of me. Or is there something else in the house that is frightening her?" Suddenly, Lauren felt the urge to explore the house to find out if something was really going on.

Lauren decided to set aside the thought of exploring and went to meet Michael. She descended the stairs into a grand hall lined with maps and relics of war that told stories of long-forgotten battles. In one corner of the hall, Michael stood, his presence commanding respect.

As Lauren approached him, the soft rustle of her footsteps echoed. Michael's gaze met hers, and his eyes pierced through the dim light. The air felt heavy with unspoken tension, and Lauren's heart raced in anticipation.

"Lauren," Michael called out, his deep voice resonating. "I've been waiting for you." His words hung in the air, charged with an intensity that made her skin prickle.

With each step, Lauren felt drawn into a world of power and intrigue, where loyalty and danger blurred. What lay ahead, only time would reveal.

Michael extended his hand, giving her a blade with an intricately designed hilt. The blade was light and cold against her skin. Lauren narrowed her eyes as she assessed the weapon, her mind racing with questions. "What's this for?" she asked skeptically.

"To remind you that survival has a price," Michael replied, his eyes glinting in the dim light. "Weakness only matters if it turns into rage."

Lauren scoffed, refusing to take the blade. "I don't need a weapon to survive," she said dismissively.

But Michael wasn't discouraged. He tossed another blade at her feet, the metal clattering on the stone floor. "If you're going to keep being hunted, you might as well decide how to bleed," he said coldly.

As Lauren looked down at the blade, Michael laid out the terms of their alliance. "I'll protect you, train you, and help you recover your wolf," he said, his eyes burning with intensity. "But in return, you'll help me destroy the Moon Crest Pack."

Lauren's instincts screamed at her to refuse and walk away from the danger Michael posed. But then he dropped a bombshell that made her blood boil.

"There's one condition," he said, anticipation dripping from his voice. "You must swear loyalty to the cause, not to me."

Lauren hesitated, her mind racing with the implications. Before she could answer, Michael pulled out a phone and played a video clip. Lauren's heart sank as she watched Alpha Nuel, her former mate, standing before a crowd, a smug smile spreading across his face.

"May the world forget that traitorous girl who thought she could be Queen," he toasted, his words laced with venom.

Lauren's rage ignited, fueled by the pain and betrayal she thought she had left behind. She felt her wolf stirring, responding to her emotions. Without thinking, she picked up the blade, the weight grounding her.

In that moment, she knew she'd made her choice. The question was, what would be the price of her decision?

The training montage began with Michael pushing Lauren to her limits. Each scene brimmed with tension as she struggled to keep pace with his demands. Sweat dripped from her brow, and her muscles protested, but Lauren refused to back down.

Michael's words cut through the air, "You want revenge? Start crawling toward it." Her body trembled with exhaustion, but she forced herself to move, to keep forging ahead. She collapsed, vomited, and cried, but didn't plead with him to stop.

In a fit of raw fury, Lauren struck Michael back, knocking him slightly off balance. He smirked, "You're starting to smell like someone who won't die easily." Lauren's chest heaved with exertion, but a spark of pride ignited within her. She was beginning to find her strength.

That night, Lauren's dreams changed. She walked through a foggy forest, the mist swirling around her ankles. A voice whispered, "Are you ready to stop running?" A glowing wolf emerged, its eyes shining like moonlight. This was her Luna wolf, always buried beneath layers of abuse and betrayal.

The wolf's voice was low and husky. "You cannot be both prey and Queen. Choose." Lauren felt a surge of determination. For the first time, she chose herself. She woke with silver eyes glowing faintly in the dark, her Luna wolf stirring, slowly returning.

Michael received a message from his scout, and his expression was unreadable. Lauren sensed something was off and listened in, her heart sinking as she heard, "Bring her back alive. The Alpha wants to punish her himself." Fear threatened to overwhelm her, but she heard her own voice in her mind, "We burn our fear. We don't feed it."

Lauren steadied herself and walked to Michael, her eyes locked on his. "Let them come. I'll be ready." Michael nodded, a hint of approval in his voice. "Then it's time you meet the rest of the wolves who hate Moon Crest as much as we do."

As Lauren followed Michael, she felt purpose growing within her. She was starting to find her place, her strength, and her pride. The journey ahead would be filled with danger, but she was ready to face it head-on.

As Lauren stood tall, ready to confront the challenges ahead, resolve washed over her. For the first time in a long time, she felt in control of her life and destiny. Fear and uncertainty still lingered, but they no longer held her back.

With newfound determination, Lauren turned to Michael and said, "I'm not just fighting for revenge; I'm fighting for myself. I'm fighting to be the wolf I was meant to be."
