Chapter 3: What Creates A Family

.

.

.

Reynolds Leywin POV:

—-----------------------------------------------------------

.

.

.

If you asked me when I was younger if I was going to have a family or find the love of my life, I might have laughed at you. I was rambunctious growing up; I left home quickly and became an adventurer. I wanted to see and experience more than the small town I grew up in.

Life has an odd way of doing things; the strings of fate that guide us have odd ways of tying knots or creating immense changes in our perceptions.

I got into a lot of trouble as an adventurer as all good adventurers do. I got to see so much more of the world than I had before. Good and bad; I got to see it all. The beauty and horror but despite the bad times or moments I look on those experiences fondly.

In those moments of struggle I was able to learn something, see something, and experience something.

So much of the world became clearer to me as I continued adventuring. Not everything was perfect, nothing was perfect but the feeling of grasping something with my own hands and seeing new parts of life is something beautiful for a lack of a better term.

My time with the Twin Horns; Adam, Angela, Durden, Jasmine, Helen, Lensa, and Alice. These years we spent together are something I know I'll cherish forevermore. I thought that everything was perfect for a time when all 8 of us were together… The life of an adventurer isn't a simple one though.

Death and despair are lurking around every corner, you see and experience so many things you couldn't begin to imagine in normal day to day life as if they were simple parts of life.

Though after all my years adventuring, all these countless experiences and trials we've faced- this is one I have no idea where to begin with in terms of handling it.

"Who are you people?" Standing before us is a child. Normally that wouldn't be an odd occurrence as children are everywhere in the towns and cities but not in the heart of the Beast Glades.

"I will ask again. Who are you?" The boy looks no older than 2, maybe 3 years old but there's much that is odd about him. Aside from being a child in the middle of the Beast Glades unsupervised he's surrounded by a mountain of corpses. The corpses of various mana beasts ranging from E-rank beasts to C-rank beasts. Nothing the average adventurer couldn't handle but something I never thought I'd see a child sat in the midst of.

I am at a loss as to how to approach this situation, something I can tell is a dilemma most of the Twin Horns are facing.

A child drenched in the blood of beasts with no adults in sight– I grew sickened at the thought that he may have been abandoned in the heart of the Glades, his parents or family casting him away left to die.

"We're adventurers." Oddly and quite unexpectedly Jasmine spoke up first. Jasmine was generally quite reserved and kept to herself- her stepping forward first is quite a surprise but it could be she feels a kinship with the boy oddly enough.

"Obviously, but that wasn't the question. So I will ask it clearer." The boy's eyes narrowed as his face contorted in a way I wouldn't expect of a child. A look of cold contemplation filled his face. His eyes emanated an odd feeling of power, their golden glow and somewhat feline appearance felt judgemental and analytic as they stared intently towards us.

"Are you friend or foe?" As the question escaped his lips a violet glow emanated from his body. It washed over him in subtle waves and these waves left an odd feeling in my chest. The boy was on guard, it was clear he didn't trust us.

I understood based on what he may have gone through that he wouldn't be so easily trusting. We could easily appear to him as a threat rather than people who he could ask for help.

A chuckle filled the air as I looked over towards Adam, the source of the laugh. I internally sighed as this was characteristic of him, he always found some sort of comedic relief in everything unexpected. It was both a good and bad thing.

In this case- bad.

"C'mon kid don't be so on guard. We're the Twin Horns, an adventuring party." I felt the urge to smack Adam for his terrible word choice that would lead to easy misunderstandings. I knew his intention to calm the boy down but his wording could've used some work.

Adam's words didn't seem to please the boy though as his guard remained steadfast and strong. He clearly took Adam's poor choice of words as most unaware of his personality would take them.

"Miss what's your name?" Adam, having taken a few steps towards the boy, stopped dead in his tracks with a look of shock on his face. He was being ignored and at least it seemed Jasmine's approach left the boy with more comfort than Adam.

"Jasmine. Jasmine Flamesworth, A-Class Adventurer." She answered calmly and waited patiently with a somewhat expectant look on her face awaiting the boy's response. I was a bit taken aback that she fully introduced herself like she did but I didn't question.

The boy stared intently for a moment, his gaze seemingly analyzing Jasmine as if trying to find any lies in her statements. I don't know why but before this boy I had the feeling I shouldn't regard him as a simple child. He radiated some cool confidence as he spoke and the corpses of mana beasts surrounding him helped greatly in altering how I perceived him.

"Jasmine…" He seemed pleased as he pondered a moment before he spoke, "Can I ask a favor of you?" Jasmine wordlessly nodded, the boy looked pleased as the waves of purple surrounding him dissipated. He almost seemed like a normal boy for a moment if not for the fact he was drenched in blood.

"Can you-" The boy's confidence dissipated as exhaustion seemed to wash over him before he tried finishing his request. "Take me w-" Unable to finish his sentence the boy collapsed amidst the dead beasts. His request, despite incomplete, was heard by everyone and Jasmine seemed to have got the message quick enough to catch him before he fell face first into a pile of beast guts.

"I accept this request~Rimuru" Jasmine gently carried the boy in her arms as walked back towards us. Oddly she spoke the boy's name but before I could ask how she knew Adam spoke up.

"How'd you know the kids name? He never said it."

"It's written on his collar. His eyes motioned towards his collar before he passed out." I hadn't noticed the small shift in the boy's gaze that Jasmine did. Given her attention to detail and superior perception it wasn't surprising she'd noticed a small motion like that.

"Adam, we really have to work on that wording of yours." Durden sighed heavily as he reprimanded Adam for his choice of words. Everyone got a small chuckle out of this as Adam acted oblivious.

"What?"

After taking a moment to collect ourselves we examined the area looking for any signs of activity. Footprints, broken branches, you name it but we couldn't find anything off aside from where we met the boy.

We were all at a loss as to what transpired here but it was clear that the boy wasn't so simple and his situation was in a word~ Complex.

We decided to go to a safe place and camp for the night. We would be postponing this mission so we could assist this boy, Rimuru.

3rd Person ~> Ciel POV:

—-----------------------------------------------------------------

.

.

.

"Young Miss, it's time to wake." No response was returned.

"Young Miss?" Once again no response, "Coming in, pardon my intrusion." The young woman sighed as she looked towards her, the young lady still asleep in bed. Not a single care in the world, her sleeping face looked peaceful beyond belief as she slept soundly unbothered by all.

"Young Miss, I must apologize but I need you to get out of bed. You have a long day ahead of you" A small smile crossed the woman's face as she internally apologized before tearing open the blinds and letting the bright morning sun flood into the room in an instant.

The girl groaned slightly as she sat herself up looking towards the maid. "Good morning Merial, apologies. I was in the midst of a lovely dream."

.

.

"It's alright Lady Ciel, I merely entered early today since you have a longer itinerary for the day." I regarded Merial with a smile, she was quite a sweet woman. She didn't enjoy enforcing rules onto me or making me follow through with menial tasks that didn't interest me. Despite this she was very punctual. We got along swelly due to these traits of hers.

It was also a fact that I was just pretending to sleep hoping to see how Rimuru and Velzard were. Frankly Rimuru should've interfered in his own reincarnation so he didn't deal with the issue he is currently.

It's been 3 years since I reincarnated into this world. These years have been quite entertaining to say the least. For starters the magic here is quite unrefined and lacking in development but the nature of the mana and its functions are quite fascinating to say the least. I do find the nature of its deviants and division quite intriguing but it appears that very few people know much beyond the basics.

Returning my gaze back towards Merial she held a small cup in her hands and over her arm she had draped was a set of clothes. I assumed she took the liberty of deciding my clothes for me today due to the tasks I have today. "Thank you for making a cup of tea for me Merial and choosing my clothing for today."

"It's nothing Lady Ciel, I just wanted to ensure that you had the proper time and energy to mentally steel yourself for today. I am aware your excitement regarding the tasks you'll have to do is effectively 0."

"You know me so well Merial. Now, how is-" Before I could finish my sentence a small figure burst into my room. Her face wore a large smile. I couldn't help but chuckle as she paused abruptly, forgetting her courtesy.

Taking a step back she knocked on the door giving me an expectant look. Her Crimson red eyes glistened from the light of the morning sun. "Come in." I felt a smile tug across my face as her eyes lit up for a moment.

Not wasting a moment she ran towards my bed and jumped up next to me. I couldn't help but find this action quite adorable, "Ciel, are you ready for today?"

"Not yet, I still have to get dressed like you do." She looked at me for a moment as I teased her before she slightly pouted finally understanding what I said.

"We can get ready together, how does that sound?" She whipped her head back towards me and nodded excitedly as her maid Nessa walked through the door into my room with a small sigh and a smile across her face.

"Sure we can do that Caera." I couldn't help but pat her head, she was quite adorable acting like this. I did feel a sting in my heart at imagining how she'd stop acting like this to her big sister eventually and would mature- become interested in boys.

I sighed mentally as I think I finally understood the feeling that Benimaru and Shuna have.

"Nessa, Merial. Would that be alright for Caera and I to get ready together?" I looked towards our respective maids as they both regarded each other for a moment before nodding.

"Looks like we can. Want me to tie your hair again?"

"Please." With a nod we got out of my bed and began putting on the clothes we had for today. It was a simple white long sleeved shirt, one generally used for exercise or training and a pair of simple black pants with simplistic shoes. It appeared that today we were going to be training or having some kind of exam done. We usually wore these types of clothes for those occasions but I assumed it'd be the former.

After putting on our clothes with Nessa and Merial's assistance Caera sat down in front of me so I could tie her hair up. Looking towards Nessa she handed me a hair tie as I began to pull back Caera's hair. She had beautiful midnight blue hair that draped down in waves, the tips of her hair somewhat curling outwardly.

Her hair was silky smooth and lush to the point that most women would feel quite envious. My little sister was quite adorable but I hadn't a single doubt that once she matured she'd have grown into a beautiful woman. A woman who would draw the eyes of all, not just for her status but for her beauty and much more.

Pulling her hair back I began to softly brush her hair. She woke up each morning with quite wild hair styles, something I think most women are glad they don't have to deal with. I know at least I myself am glad I don't have to and Velzard would likely mimic these thoughts of mine.

Caera sat silently staring out the window at the morning sky while I brushed her hair. These moments of peace and tranquility I spend are things I never thought I'd experience before. I suppose having lived this way for a small while I may have gleaned the reasons Rimuru wanted me to reincarnate into a body of my own as well.

Caera and I spent a few minutes silently as I finished brushing her hair and began to braid it together into a loose fishtail braid letting a few strands of hair fall down out of the braid.

Merial came in with perfect timing as she handed Caera a mirror. She sat silent for a moment as she looked at her hair before turning to me with a smile filling her face.

"Thank you Ciel." She paid me for my hard labor in tying her hair and dealing with her bed head with a warm smile and a small hug.

It was an acceptable payment, a hug that I would reciprocate for but a moment before we would have to head down for breakfast.

"Thank you for tying Lady Caera's hair as always Lady Ciel."

"It's fine Nessa, I quite enjoy these moments and I think you do too. Right Caera?" She responded with a small nod as she ran her fingers over the braid.

This was nice. Being an elder sister, it was quite a rewarding existence. It might be due to the fact that Caera doesn't act like a brat or a rampaging toddler but whatever the reason may be. I enjoy this and these moments are times I doubt I will be able to forget.

Though I have to ask myself. What is Rimuru thinking?

He intentionally Reincarnated both Velzard and I but didn't bother thinking of his own rebirth. He still seems to put us before himself. I appreciate his gestures but I don't think the start to his life is something he should've dealt with.

That's a card he shouldn't be dealt. I won't complain but I do hope to get some answers and maybe see him soon.

But I do wonder. Are Velzard and Rimuru in Alacrya or somewhere else?
