Chapter 14: Bizarro and a Heartfelt Plea
The news was surreal, even by National City standards. A twisted, pale reflection of Supergirl, flying through the city, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. Bizarro. Adam felt a chill run down his spine. Maxwell Lord was playing God, and he'd created a monster. And that monster was targeting Kara.
He found Kara in the D.E.O. bullpen, looking utterly distraught. The concept of a corrupted, evil version of herself, a living mockery, was clearly tearing her apart.
"So," Adam said, his voice softer than usual, "you've got a crazy ex-clone now? That's a new level of complicated. Even for you."
Kara looked up, her eyes filled with a raw pain. "She's… she's me, Adam. But twisted. Everything I am, but wrong. And she's hurting people."
Adam sat beside her, offering a comforting presence. "She's not you, Kara. She's a perversion. A cheap knock-off. You're the original. The hero. Don't let Lord's twisted science make you doubt that. She's a victim, too, in a way. A weapon. Not a person." He paused, then continued, his voice gentle but firm. "And you know what? You're strong enough to deal with her. Because you're Supergirl. And you're Kara. And that's more than enough."
Kara leaned into his presence, finding solace in his unwavering support. He saw her pain, her disgust, her fear, and he didn't flinch. He just offered quiet understanding and a steady hand. His unwavering support through this disturbing ordeal further solidified his bond with her. She saw his genuine care for her, not just Supergirl, but Kara Danvers, the vulnerable human beneath the cape.
Later, as the D.E.O. struggled to find a way to stop Bizarro without harming Kara, Adam approached Winn, who was staring at a complex diagram of Bizarro's cellular structure.
"This is insane," Winn muttered. "Lord used Kryptonian DNA, but he messed with it. She's… unstable. And she seems to be immune to everything we've thrown at her."
Adam leaned over the console. "Hmm, unstable Kryptonian clone, huh? You know, I remember reading about a theoretical concept in advanced biology. Sometimes, when a clone is created with corrupted or unstable DNA, it can have a unique vulnerability. Like, a specific frequency that resonates with the instability, or a chemical compound that targets the corrupted cells. Almost like a 'cure' for a disease, but for a twisted clone. It's a long shot, but if her physiology is a mirror image, maybe her weaknesses are too. Or opposite."
Winn looked at him, his eyes wide. "A specific frequency? A chemical compound? You think there's a way to… reverse it? Or stabilize her?"
"Hey, I'm just a guy who reads too much sci-fi," Adam said with a shrug. "But if I were trying to create a twisted clone, I'd probably leave myself a backdoor. Or a kill switch. Just in case it went rogue. Lord's a genius, but he's also arrogant. He probably thinks he's too smart to make a mistake. But everyone makes mistakes. Even evil geniuses."
Winn was already typing, his fingers flying across the keyboard, a renewed sense of purpose in his eyes. "Adam, you're… you're a walking encyclopedia of weirdly relevant information!"
"Just trying to keep things interesting," Adam quipped. "Now go save your friend. And try not to get turned into a Bizarro version of yourself. The world only needs one of me."
After the intense confrontation, with Bizarro safely neutralized and returned to a comatose state, Kara found Adam in the quiet of the CatCo office, both of them exhausted but relieved.
"She's contained," Kara said, her voice soft. "Winn and Alex… they found a way. A compound that stabilized her. It was… your idea, wasn't it?"
Adam just offered a small, tired smile. "Just a lucky guess. Glad it helped." He looked at her, his expression serious. "You okay, Kara? That was… a lot. Seeing yourself like that."
Kara nodded, then shook her head. "It was. But… you were there. You always are. You didn't look away. You just… helped me see that she wasn't me. And that I was still me. Even when I felt like… like a monster." Her hand instinctively reached out, gently touching his arm. "Thank you, Adam. For everything."
Adam covered her hand with his own, a silent acknowledgment of the deepening connection between them. His unwavering support through this disturbing ordeal had solidified their bond. She saw his genuine care for her, not just Supergirl, but Kara Danvers, the vulnerable human beneath the cape. The romantic tension, a palpable hum, filled the space between them.
"She sees me," Adam thought, a warmth spreading through him. "She truly sees me. And she trusts me. That's more than I ever thought I'd get."
