Chapter 46 - Chapter 46 – Headaches

Commissioner Lewis scowled in irritation as he hung up on yet another person trying to book an event at the fairgrounds for Heidi Rockwell and her class to perform at. The office had been flooded with calls almost nonstop throughout the week from people either asking if there was an event or trying to schedule one themselves. He had already spoken with their IT department to try and get an auto-attendant menu set up on their phone system to begin screening calls, but apparently their phone system was from the stone ages and didn't have that kind of functionality. Either that or their IT department just didn't know how to set it up.

Miss Devons had already assured him that she had no plans of holding a concert at the fairgrounds with her class. The problem had been upgraded from an annoyance to a serious headache when thousands of fans had begun arriving in town the previous day, intent on watching a concert at the fairgrounds. All of the hotels and campgrounds were sold out, and people had begun setting up camps all around the town. While the local business owners were ecstatic about the unexpected influx of business, local law enforcement had been forced to call in reinforcements from the surrounding counties to help monitor the quickly growing mob of determined fans.

Margaret, the Director of Facilities Management, had stopped accepting calls from any numbers from out of state, which had resulted in people calling the commissioner's office directly.

Commissioner Lewis groaned when he saw the caller ID for the governor's office show up on his phone.

"Commissioner Lewis," he answered, trying to keep the resignation out of his voice.

"Good morning, Commissioner Lewis, this is Governor Halberd," the governor spoke in a jovial tone.

"Good morning, Governor Halberd," he replied, suppressing a sigh.

"I've got a bit of a problem I was hoping you could help me out with, Commissioner," Governor Halberd said in the same cheerful voice.

"Of course," he answered in a neutral tone.

"The Chamber of Commerce tells me we have a flood of paying tourists hoping for an unplanned concert at your fairgrounds, but that nobody at the county offices is willing to work with them to arrange for a safe environment," the governor said cheerfully. "I assured them that our county commissioners were the kind of people who could get things done when unexpected challenges arose. I hope I wasn't mistaken in my assessment of your office's abilities."

"Of course not, governor," he replied, unable to keep the resignation out of his voice.

"Glad to hear it!" he declared jubilantly. "I was planning on flying down to watch the concert as well, so please save me a seat."

"Yes sir," Commissioner Lewis agreed with a sigh. "It would be our pleasure."

"Fantastic," the governor enthused. "I knew I could count on you. See you tomorrow night then."

Commissioner Lewis groaned as he hung up the phone. What a nightmare. He picked the phone back up and began placing calls, all of them met with varying degrees of consternation. Somehow, it made him feel better that he wasn't the only one having a bad day.
