Chapter 50 - Chapter 50: Birthdays, Debts, and State-Level Audits

The rhythmic clack-clack-clack of the railway tracks did very little to soothe the tension in the train compartment.

On one side of the bench sat Erza, stiff and upright, alongside Kai, who was casually leaning back with a magnifying glass in one hand and a tiny, intricate brass clockwork assembly in the other. Across from them sat Gray—hands tucked behind his head—and Natsu, who had managed to stay conscious for approximately forty-five seconds after the locomotive pulled out of Magnolia station.

"Ugh... my soul is leaving through my ears..." Natsu groaned, his face turning an alarming shade of boiled-cabbage green. He flopped sideways, burying his nose into Gray's shoulder. "Gray... make it stop..."

"GET OFF ME, YOU FIRE IDIOT!" Gray yelled, shoving Natsu's face away with a palm against his cheek. "You're getting drool on my coat! Sit up!"

Natsu slumped over the small wooden table, his dark eyes pleading as he looked up at Kai. "Kai... please... the shocky thing... use the lightning shocky device on my head again..."

Erza turned her head toward Kai, nodding solemnly. "It was surprisingly effective last time, Kai. A mild electrical current to override his system could prove merciful."

Kai didn't even look up from his brass gears. A sharp, lazy smirk curled at the edge of his lips.

"Forbidden by doctor's orders," Kai drawled, flicking a tiny gear into place with his index finger. "Porlyusica explicitly barred me from deploying external magic while my origin pathways heal. I am a law-abiding citizen, Salamander. My hands are tied."

"YOU CAME TO THE STATION TO FIGHT A NOBLE!" Natsu screeched, leaning farther toward the window as his stomach gave a violent, liquid heave. "THAT'S MAGIC!"

"That's civil administration," Kai corrected deadpan, blow-torch-fusing two copper wires with a faint, non-magical spark from a flint wheel. "Suffer in silence, motion-sickness boy."

Natsu let out a pathetic whimper, his face pressed against the cool glass of the window.

Erza let out an exhausted, motherly sigh. "Enough."

THWACK.

Without breaking her rhythm, Erza's steel-clad gauntlet flew across the table, connecting cleanly with the back of Natsu's skull. Natsu's eyes rolled up into his head, and he collapsed onto the leather bench like a sack of potatoes, out cold.

"Aye..." Happy whimpered, hovering safely near the ceiling light fixture. "Erza's anesthesia is so scary..."

"Much better," Gray grunted, rolling his shoulders and leaning back. He cast a side-eye at the brass contraption in Kai's hands. "What are you even building anyway?"

"A multi-threaded spatial resonance tuning fork," Kai murmured, squinting into his magnifying glass as he tweaked a micro-screw. "Since Juvia's fluid mechanics proved that state-shifting doesn't require high-density mana output, I'm attempting to miniaturize my phase-anchor so I don't have to waste physical stamina stepping through shadow boundaries. Not that an ice-ballerina would understand molecular density."

Gray's brow twitched. "I didn't ask for the full lecture, eyes-and-gears."

Kai merely whistled a lazy tune, completely ignoring him as the train thundered south toward the vast, rolling meadows of the Heartfilia domain.

Far to the south, the sprawling, gilded gates of the Heartfilia Estate stood tall and imposing against the afternoon sky.

Lucy Heartfilia walked down the long, cobblestone path leading up to the main mansion, her leather boots crunching quietly over the gravel. Every step brought a crushing wave of nostalgia. Memories flooded back—some warm, but most heavy with cold isolation.

One memory in particular poked at her chest: a tiny, seven-year-old Lucy running down these exact stone steps, holding a clumsily wrapped bento box containing a rice ball shaped like her father's face—an innocent attempt to make him smile and remind him of her birthday. She remembered the cold, dismissive glare Jude Heartfilia had given her before telling the maids to throw the food away because he had an international trade meeting.

Today was her birthday, too. Not that anyone here would remember.

She let out a quiet sigh, stopping near the front courtyard garden.

"La-la-la~ sweeping the leaves away~"

A middle-aged woman in a crisp maid's apron was humming to herself, sweeping fallen pine needles off the marble steps with a straw broom.

Lucy's eyes softened, a small, genuine smile touching her lips. "Mrs. Spetto?"

The woman froze. The straw broom slipped from her fingers, clattering against the marble. Slowly, Mrs. Spetto turned around, her eyes widening until they looked like tea saucers.

"L-Lucy-sama?!" Mrs. Spetto gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

Before Lucy could say another word, the old maid burst into tears, her face twisting in pure, unadulterated joy. "OH, MY DEAR CHILD! YOU'RE BACK! EVERYONE! COME QUICKLY! LUCY-SAMA HAS RETURNED!"

Within seconds, the quiet courtyard erupted into chaotic noise. From the side doors, the kitchens, and the stables, a whole crowd of elderly staff members came running—cleaners, head cooks, gardeners, and senior maids who had served the estate since Lucy was in diapers.

"Lucy-sama! Look how tall you've grown!"

"Are you eating properly?! You look so thin!"

"Did you really write a novel?! We heard rumors you were in a wizard guild!"

"Oh, praise the heavens, the young mistress is home!"

Lucy found herself buried in a sea of tearful hugs, hands patting her shoulders and dusting off her traveling coat. For a brief moment, the suffocating weight of the estate lifted. This—these people—were the only warm parts of her childhood.

"I'm back, everyone," Lucy said softly, her eyes watering slightly as she hugged Mrs. Spetto back. "I'm so sorry I ran off without saying goodbye..."

"Nonsense, child!" Grandpa Belno, the chief gardener, wiped his eye with a dirt-stained handkerchief. "We were worried sick, but we knew you had your mother's fiery spirit!"

"Lucy-sama."

The cheerful atmosphere evaporated instantly.

A young, stiff-backed junior maid stepped onto the terrace, her head bowed respectfully. "Master Jude has observed your arrival from the upper balcony. He requests your immediate presence in the study."

The lively chatter instantly died out. The elderly workers shrank back, their expressions darkening with anxious worry. Lucy looked up toward the high, arched windows of the central tower, her heart tightening.

Even now... he hasn't changed at all.

Twenty minutes later, Lucy stood inside the cold, mahogany-lined walls of Jude Heartfilia's private study.

She had been escorted to her old quarters first, changing into a formal pink-and-black noble gown—a dress identical in style to the ones she had been forced to wear as a proper aristocratic lady. The fabric felt restrictive, and the seams were noticeably tight across her shoulders and chest. Either the dress had shrunk in storage, or she had simply grown stronger, broader, and healthier during her time in Fairy Tail.

Smoothing down the heavy skirts, Lucy knocked on the heavy wood. "Father. It is Lucy."

"Enter."

At the far end of the room, standing behind a massive oak desk overlooking the estate grounds, stood Jude Heartfilia. His hands were tucked neatly behind his back, his posture rigid and unyielding.

He didn't turn around immediately.

"So," Jude spoke, his voice cold, flat, and devoid of any parental warmth. "You have finally returned, Lucy."

Lucy stood at attention, her hands folded over her silk skirt. Not a single smile crossed her face. "Father. I apologize for leaving without a word. It was irresponsible of me, and I regret how I departed."

Jude gave a slow, curt nod, still staring out the window. "A surprisingly mature admission coming from you. Had you remained with that filthy guild of hooligans, I would have been forced to exercise the full extent of my financial capital and political leverage to completely erase them from Fiore."

He finally turned around, fixing her with a cold, analytical stare. "I trust you have now gained firsthand experience regarding how your selfish, whimsical actions cause severe trouble for those around you?"

Lucy nodded quietly, keeping her expression completely neutral.

"You are a Heartfilia," Jude continued, his voice dropping into a stern, lecturing tone. "You are not like those lower-class mercenaries. Your world is vastly different from theirs, and it is a stroke of fortune that you were able to understand that before destroying your standing entirely."

He paused, picking up a gold-embossed ledger. "Your return comes at an auspicious time. I have completed formal negotiations with the Duke of Jullenel. You will be wed to his eldest son by the end of the month."

Lucy's eyes darkened slightly, though her voice remained steady. "I assumed as much."

"A marital union with the Jullenel family secures the necessary territorial rights for Heartfilia Railways' southern expansion," Jude said, as if discussing a property acquisition. "This alliance will guarantee the long-term prosperity, power, and happiness of our house."

Lucy stared at him, repeating the word in a soft, hollow murmur. "...Happiness?"

"And naturally," Jude added casually, opening his ledger, "you will be expected to produce a male heir within two years to secure the Heartfilia bloodline. That is all. You may retire to your quarters while the seamstresses adjust your wardrobe."

The study fell dead silent.

Jude dipped his quill into an inkwell, preparing to sign a document. "Why are you still standing there? Dismissed."

"Father..." Lucy spoke quietly. "...please do not misunderstand."

Jude's quill paused mid-stroke. His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked up. "What?"

Lucy took a step forward. The timid, nervous girl who used to tremble under his glare was gone. In her place stood a mage of Fairy Tail.

"I did not come back here to surrender, Father," Lucy said, her voice growing firmer with every word. "I came back because running away without saying goodbye was wrong. I came here to look you in the eye and tell you my decision before I leave for good."

Jude froze, staring at her in genuine shock. "Leave...? Have you lost your mind?!"

"Happiness isn't something that can be decided or bought for someone else!" Lucy shouted, her voice echoing off the high mahogany walls. "It's something you have to find for yourself and hold onto with your own hands! I am going to follow my own path, and you don't get to decide who I become or who I marry!"

She reached up, grabbing the collar of the heavy, suffocating silk dress.

RIP!

With a sharp, decisive tug, Lucy tore the formal sleeves and heavy silk overlay right down the middle, stepping out of the restrictive hoops and letting the expensive fabric pool around her boots like garbage.

"And don't you EVER mess with Fairy Tail again!" Lucy yelled, pointing a finger directly at his face, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "If you ever target my guild again... I—and every single one of my friends—will consider you an enemy of the highest order!"

Jude stood paralyzed behind his desk, his jaw slightly open as he stared at his daughter.

"If you hadn't stooped so low as to hire Phantom Lord... maybe we could have talked like a real family," Lucy muttered, turning her back on him as tears finally began to streak down her cheeks. "But it's too late now. You hurt my friends. You tried to destroy the people who gave me a home."

She walked toward the heavy double doors, her shoulders straight and unbending.

"I don't need your money. I don't need these dresses. I don't care about being an heiress or a Heartfilia," she said softly. "I just want to be Lucy. The Lucy that my guild accepts for who I am. Fairy Tail is my family, Father—a family that is a hundred times warmer than anything in this cold house."

She reached the brass door handles, pausing for just a second. "It hurts to leave the place where I grew up with Mom... where Spetto, Grandpa Belno, and everyone took care of me. But..."

Lucy looked back over her shoulder, offering her father a sad, beautiful, tearful smile.

For a fraction of a second, as the golden evening sunlight streamed through the window behind her, Jude didn't just see his daughter. Standing right beside her, framing her glowing form, was the faint, radiant silhouette of his late wife.

Layla... Jude's mind whispered, his heart executing a violent, agonizing thud against his ribs.

"If Mama were here today..." Lucy whispered softly, "...she'd tell me to follow my heart."

She pulled open the doors and stepped out into the hall. "Goodbye, Daddy."

An hour later, the crimson glow of the setting sun washed over the quiet hilltop overlooking the estate.

Lucy stood in her normal traveling clothes—her blue skirt, white vest, and leather belt firmly in place. She was standing in front of a modest marble gravestone surrounded by blooming white lilies: Layla Heartfilia.

She set down a fresh bouquet of flowers, bowing her head in quiet reverence. "I did it, Mama. I finally told him."

"LUCYYYYYYY!"

Lucy blinked, her head snapping toward the base of the hill.

Sprinting up the grassy incline at breakneck speed were four familiar, chaotic figures. Natsu was in the lead, waving his arms like a madman, with Gray right behind him, Happy flying overhead, and Erza striding forward with her hand on her sword hilt.

Before Lucy could even open her mouth—OOF!

Happy flew through the air like a blue cannonball, slamming directly into her chest and wrapping his arms around her neck, sobbing violently. "LUCYYY! WE WERE SO WORRIED!"

In a split second, Natsu, Gray, and Erza swarmed her, all shouting over each other in absolute chaos:

"LUCY! ARE YOU OKAY?!" Natsu roared, stumbling over a tree root and tumbling head over heels before springing right back up. "DID THAT OLD BASTARD LOCK YOU UP?!"

"Guys?!" Lucy gasped, her jaw dropping as she caught Happy. "What are you—how did you get here so fast?!"

Erza stepped up, her eyes scanning Lucy from head to toe for injuries. "We recovered your note in Magnolia. We came to ensure you were not being held against your will."

"You idiot!" Gray grunted, crossing his arms. "You don't just run off back to your rich family without telling anyone! We thought Phantom forced your hand!"

Lucy stared at the four of them, a mixture of shock and overwhelming warmth washing over her. "You guys... you came all the way here for me?"

"Of course we did!" Natsu growled, fire flickering around his knuckles. "Where's your dad?! I'm gonna melt his desk!"

"I-It's fine! Really!" Lucy chuckled awkwardly, waving her hands defensively. "I didn't come here to surrender! I just... I needed to tell him off face-to-face and close that chapter of my life. I'm done with this place. I'm coming back to Fairy Tail!"

Natsu, Gray, Erza, and Happy all blinked, staring at her in utter silence for three seconds.

"Wait..." Gray scratched his head. "That's it? You just yelled at him and walked out?"

"Aye!" Happy cheered. "Lucy used Verbal Attack! It was super effective!"

"Hey! What's that supposed to mean?!" Lucy yelled, her face flushing pink.

"Yawn."

A long, theatrical yawn echoed from the treeline behind them.

Kai stepped out from the shade of an oak tree, his hands tucked lazily into his coat pockets. He looked around at the pristine estate grounds, then fixed Lucy with a thoroughly unimpressed, golden-eyed glare.

"So, to summarize," Kai drawled, his voice dripping with dry sarcasm. "Standard rich-girl family drama, resolved by a dramatic arrival and emotional declarations. Exactly what I expected from Blondie."

Lucy went dead-still. Her mouth dropped open as she pointed a trembling finger at him. "K-KAI?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?! Wait... did you come to rescue me too?!"

Natsu immediately grinned, slapping Kai on the back. "Yeah! Kai said he wanted to—"

SWIPE.

Before Natsu could finish his sentence, Kai grabbed the back of Natsu's scarf, spun him around, and tossed him sideways directly into a thick, thorny berry bush.

THUD.

"Don't put words in my mouth, you ash-brained ape," Kai said flatly, adjusting his lapels without skipping a beat. He turned his eyes back to Lucy, his expression going completely blank. "Don't flatter yourself, Blondie. I didn't travel three hours on a train to participate in your adolescent rebellion."

Lucy twitched, her face flushing crimson. "THEN WHY ARE YOU HERE?!"

"I am here to conduct official business with Jude Heartfilia," Kai said smoothly, stepping past her and walking down the cobblestone path toward the mansion's main entrance.

Lucy blinked, her anger instantly morphing into deep concern as she trotted after him. "Talk to my dad? Why?! What do you want with him?"

Kai offered her a slow, dangerous smirk over his shoulder. "Oh, nothing much. I just wanted to give him a big, warm hug for bringing such a noisy nuisance into the world."

Lucy froze, a bright red blush exploding across her cheeks. "W-WHAT?! STOP JOKING!"

Gray groaned, slapping a hand over his face, while Erza let out an exhausted sigh.

Kai didn't even slow down, heading toward the estate's front entrance. "Then don't ask stupid questions, Blondie. Why else would I want a word with your dear old dad? The man literally funded an illegal inter-guild war."

Lucy's blush faded, replaced by a sudden, anxious spike of concern as she remembered the destruction Phantom Lord had brought upon Magnolia. She took a step toward him. "W-Wait... Kai, what are you actually going to do to him?"

Kai shrugged lazily, his hands buried deep in his coat pockets as he approached the front doors of the mansion. "Who knows? Depends on his attitude."

Erza stepped forward, her brow furrowed with genuine concern. "Kai, do not do anything rash. The Council is already monitoring our guild's post-war activities."

Kai stopped at the top of the marble steps, turning his head back slightly. His golden eyes were cold, calculating, and completely void of mercy.

"Rash? Me?" Kai murmured, a faint, mocking smile tugging at his lips. "Come now, Red. You're talking like I'm a killer..." He paused, his smirk widening just a fraction. "...Well, I used to be one. But that's in the past. I'm a good boy now."

He waved a lazy hand over his shoulder as he pushed open the grand mahogany doors of the estate.

"You kids run along back to the station. Or stick around for my return. Your choice."
