Chapter 261 - Chapter 261: Sanctuary Blessing

"Phew…"

Duanmu Huai opened his eyes and stretched lazily.

After killing that stubborn creature that just wouldn't die, he, Claire, and Sherry had taken the train out of the city. Soon after, the game's result screen appeared—signaling the end of the first map.

"Let's see what good stuff I got…"

He muttered while opening the system menu, and almost immediately, the prompts appeared before his eyes.

[Biochemical Disaster Map — Chapter One Complete]

[Points Earned: 1000]

[Claire Cleared Without Injury +500]

[Sherry Cleared Without Injury +500]

[Defeated Mutant 3 Times in a Row +3000]

[Total Bioweapon Kills +13000]

[Total Points: 18000]

[Point Shop Unlocked…]

"Hmm…"

He browsed through the shop list. As far as crossover event rewards went, they were pretty average—nothing too powerful, nothing too useless. The only things worth anything to him in the real world were Construction Points for building facilities, and Experience Points. As for rocket launchers or shotguns? He didn't care for those.

But as he scrolled all the way down, he suddenly froze.

"'Special Reward — Sanctuary Blessing'? What the hell is that?"

Curious, Duanmu Huai opened the option. Instantly, a line of text appeared before him:

[Sanctuary Blessing: Increases followers' resistance to viral infection by 10% (48-hour cooldown). Removes one disease (unlocked after full redemption, 48-hour cooldown).]

So that's what it was.

He immediately understood. He couldn't use it himself—but his followers could. He remembered clearly that the Inquisition's sanctuary system followed the Skyrim-style mechanic. In other words, as long as an Inquisition follower prayed before a sacred icon, they would receive a blessing. This new Sanctuary Blessing essentially added an extra layer of power to that blessing.

This was definitely something worth getting.

The Inquisition's sacred icon was a warhammer and a skull. The current blessing effect granted +1 Intimidation and +10% damage against non-human species.

If he unlocked this Sanctuary Blessing, it would add an entirely new function.

It could be redeemed five times, each increasing resistance by 10%. That meant it could reach 50% in total. A bit pricey, though—each redemption cost 10,000 points. So the 18,000 points he'd earned this chapter were only enough for one. To fully unlock the blessing's entire functionality, he'd need 50,000 points. But…

That's fine. This is only the first chapter.

He didn't recall any such feature in the original game, but it made sense. Most players back when this crossover launched were nowhere near high enough level for such rewards. This "Sanctuary Blessing" was clearly a special bonus meant for players who possessed divine authority—priests, paladins, or gods. Ordinary players wouldn't be able to use it, making it a total waste for them.

But for Duanmu Huai, it was far from useless. The ability to remove disease and boost immunity was a massive advantage for Inquisition operations across different worlds. After all, aging, sickness, and death were things humans could never escape. And now, one prayer at a sacred icon could cure a disease? What other deity offered something like that? Disease resistance was also essential for Inquisition soldiers operating on dangerous worlds.

Sure, there was a cooldown—but still, not bad at all.

When it comes to destroying humanity, villains always use one of three methods—poison, plague, or armies. If I can boost disease resistance to fifty percent, then even in a Resident Evil–type world, that's a huge survival boost.

Though now I'm wondering—does cancer count as a disease?

If it does… the Inquisition would become the number one religious organization across every planet.

But strictly speaking… is cancer really a disease?

Hmm… that's hard to say.

Either way, he spent 10,000 points to buy Sanctuary Blessing +1. With the remaining 8,000 points, he used 1,000 to purchase a new Inquisition outfit, and saved the rest for later. Originally, he'd only intended to grind this mission for some EXP and to kill time. But after seeing such a powerful bonus? Not grabbing it would've been a loss.

Alright then… time for Chapter Two.

Closing his eyes again, Duanmu Huai lay back on the bed. Soon, the world around him shifted once more.

The next instant, he found himself standing in a withered forest filled with icy fog.

This was the opening of Chapter Two — Dark Heresy.

In Chapter One, players had teamed up with the Resident Evil protagonists to escape the city consumed by plague. But in Chapter Two, players took on their own independent identities.

This setting was the world of Resident Evil 4. According to that game's plot, the main character was Leon, a secret agent sent to rescue the president's kidnapped daughter, Ashley, from a mysterious cult.

However, in this version, the player's story was entirely different.

If Chapter One was about reliving a classic, then Chapter Two served as a reminder of what the players truly were—Inquisitors. Their mission this time was their most sacred duty: the extermination of heresy.

That's right. Unlike Leon, who came here to rescue someone, the player's task was simple—wipe out every last cultist in this chapter, and destroy the vile organization known as the Los Illuminados!

This time, Duanmu Huai's appearance had changed as well.

Unlike the bare-chested Terminator look from the previous chapter, he now emerged already dressed. Beneath a leather coat, trousers, and high boots, he wore a long, black trench coat with a high collar that covered half his face. Golden skull-shaped buttons gleamed down the front, and where his cape was fastened at the chest, a blood-red cross-and-skull emblem stood out boldly.

On his left shoulder, two parchment seals were pinned beneath dark red lacquer markings. Upon them was inscribed a chilling phrase:

"The heretic craves the flame of salvation.

Let them not fear—

For we shall grant it unto them."

"Ahh… much better."

Duanmu Huai rolled his shoulders. This was, after all, standard attire for an Inquisitor—though the outfit prioritized agility over protection, which was why only the sneaky types preferred it.

Still, if you wanted to charm someone in a foreign world, this was the outfit to wear. In the game, this was basically just a "cosmetic skin." You could wear it, but it offered no practical benefit—aside from looking cool.

Though results may vary.

Alright then—time to work.

Collecting his thoughts, Duanmu Huai strode down the slope toward the nearby village.

At first glance, it looked like an isolated farming settlement. People bustled about with tools in hand, tending to crops and chores, living simple, dull lives. Of course, that impression only held if one ignored the roaring bonfire in the village square—and the burning corpse impaled above it.

The moment the villagers spotted him, panic rippled through the crowd. Several men brandished machetes and pitchforks, shouting as they charged toward him.

Well, even if they weren't cultists, most people would probably attack him on sight.

But Duanmu Huai wasn't bothered in the slightest.

"Die!"

Roaring, he clenched his fists and charged straight into the mob. The villagers screamed and swung their weapons—but their attacks had no effect. Duanmu Huai barreled into them like a runaway tank, sending several flying through the air. With a sweeping motion of his arm, he slammed the rest aside, knocking them all to the ground.

Before they could even rise, he stomped down—turning their bodies into pulp.

Bang!!

More villagers appeared from the houses, some armed with rifles. They aimed and fired. Bullets slammed into Duanmu Huai's chest, but the impacts barely slowed him. He turned toward one man firing from a second-floor balcony, broke into a sprint, then leapt high into the air. The villager's scream was cut short as Duanmu Huai brought his clasped fists down with all his strength.

Boom!!

The entire wooden house collapsed instantly. The unfortunate gunman was reduced to a bloody smear beneath the debris. Duanmu Huai rose from the dust, his body spattered with dark red blood. Just standing there, he looked like a warlord of destruction—an embodiment of wrath and ruin.

Even the frenzied villagers began to falter, trembling as primal fear took hold. Their hands shook on their weapons, none daring to move first—terrified that a single step might trigger their deaths.

"AAAAAAAHHH!!!"

Suddenly, the wall beside him burst apart, and a man wielding a roaring chainsaw lunged at him. But Duanmu Huai didn't even turn his head. He simply raised one arm and caught the spinning blade mid-swing. The chainsaw shrieked in protest, its rotation grinding to a halt under his grip.

Then his right hand clenched.

CRACK!

The chainsaw exploded into fragments in his palm.

The man holding it froze in shock. Before he could react, the broken end of the chainsaw stabbed forward—straight through his skull. His body went limp and fell to the ground with a heavy thud.

The other villagers stared in horror. Under Duanmu Huai's cold gaze, their bloodlust melted into trembling fear. Every creature understood, deep within its bones, the instinct to fear death—and the one before them was death incarnate.

Duanmu Huai took a single step forward, crushing the corpse's skull beneath his boot.

"Alright then—die, heretics. You have no tomorrow."

A cruel smile twisted across his face, making him look every bit the demon king who had come to destroy the world.
