Chapter-08

Múspellsheim,

Yggdrasil,

Earth – Year 2126,

Overlord Verse;

The next day arrived with quiet anticipation. Logging in once again, Kai appeared near the central outpost of Múspellsheim. His was calmer now, a steadiness in his eyes that hadn't been there the day before – as the loneliness that ate away at his psyche had dwindled.

The days he spent playing Yggdrasil alone during beta had made him crave for comrades – while he had been against the idea at the beginning, but the solo grinding bored him to death – the endless battles with never ending monsters in the whole of Yggdrasil, with no one to share glory and failures with.

Exploring the vast worlds of Yggdrasil – battling Boss monsters was not possible for a lone player without the World Item that turned a player into World Enemy. And with the limited progress he could make playing solo in a DMMORPG – his ambition to be the top was not feasible. 'I'll have to find potential members for my Guild. As joining Ainz Ooal Gown is not an option now. With Shouko in tow, we should be able to create a stronger guild. Her meddling hasn't triggered the dream yet… It could be a loophole – after all the moment I called and tried talking about future plans of Yggdrasil with Kayaba, the memories of that place – of that dream gets triggered. She could be my salvation in this accursed world.'

He stood alone, contemplating his future plans, as a thought occurred to him. 'But will Shouko play the game till the end? Her current enthusiasm… is admirable but will it last?' he stood pondering as he reached a road block on his future plans. 'Well, it up to her. All I can do is play till the end, with or without anyone. While it is her decision to make. Moreover, we still have twelve more years before closedown. I am sure it will somehow play out, while, all I can do is try.'

Not long after he began his contemplation, Evernight Candidum appeared beside him in a radiant burst of light from the skies, the familiar red cape flowing as she took in her surroundings.

"You're early," she said. While Kai stood dumbstruck at her method of travel.

'Though I have a lot of questions about that flashy entrance, but it's easier and better for my serenity to have some questions unanswered.' He mused.

Kai sighed as he turned to face her. "Anyway, I logged in ten minutes ago. Let's get going now, we can't have anyone else snatch that dungeon from us."

She mentally rolled her eyes at his indifferent attitude, while she had so dearly wished for him to question about her entrance.

"I hope you're ready," he said, snapping her out of her thoughts. Opening the map, he pointed towards an unmapped region of the map. "There's a dungeon in this region I've been eyeing since beta. A Middle or Upper Intermediate-tier dungeon, it's quite a difficult dungeon in the early stages of the game – for a low-level party to challenge that is. With it being in the open – it's begging for players to attack it, I suppose the devs wished for it to be cleared at the early stages."

"Oh?" she exclaimed – he had managed to grab her attention, igniting both their competitive spirit.

"Tyrant of Flames. It should not be too hard, but it isn't easy either—not unless you've are a decent player with a good team. It should prove difficult for even for a Level 100 player to challenge the dungeon alone."

"But then, how are we supposed to clear it with you – a Level 49 player?", she spoke sceptically, doubt evident in her voice – with none of her flamboyant attitude present.

Kai smirked. "Well, it's Level 62 now. I did grind in a good monster rich region and cleared a dungeon along the way – late night before going to bed."

She grinned. "I guess the level gap may have wounded someone. Still, that does not explain about the plan for dungeon diving. With you still being Level 62…"

"Noted. And as for the dungeon, it's quite simple. We can clear the mobs – no worries, and that's the easiest part of this dungeon. I'll explain the plan for the Boss on the move."

With Kai casting a Gate to the nearest point he could, both of them walked through it.

 ******

The Tyrant of Flame's dungeon stood carved into the heart of a magma basin. Lava flowed through deep channels, casting orange light across the jagged obsidian walls. The inside was hot enough to distort visibility, heat shimmering off the ground in waves. 'It's great that I have resistance against heat.' Kai sighed in relief. As none of the previous dungeon dealt as much fire damage as this dungeon.

Kai and Shouko stood at the entrance, their footsteps echoing off blackened stone.

"This place is filled with monsters," Shouko muttered firing off arrows from Golden Bow.

Kai grinned. "That's how you know it's a good farming place." Having formed a party, the experience gained by them both is equally divided between them – it was quite an advantageous situation for him. Kai could have never expected to get carried by another player. 'Still, this should allow us to concentrate more on quests and side-quests.' He mused, while punching, slicing and firing spells at monsters swarming them.

They advanced, fending off fire-slimes, ember hounds, and molten skeletons, flame serpent, salamanders, Imps, Fire Elementals and many other species of monsters. The enemies were tough enough to warrant caution but not overwhelming—thanks to their combined synergy. Kai handled the aggro and ranged bombardments using , , , , and even a spell, while Shouko handled close combat, cutting through enemies with precise spear thrusts and firing arrows.

"Stop stealing my kills," Kai called once, half-joking, as her bow that had transformed into a Golden spear tore through an Intermediate Fire Elemental.

"Then hit faster."

They reached the final chamber in just under an hour. The ground trembled as a gigantic figure rose from his throne of molten rock.

The Tyrant of Flames towered over them, eyes glowing like coals, his body encased in glowing runes. He held a long blade made of hardened lava, molten rock and earth.

"Ready?" Kai asked, checking his buffs.

Shouko pulled her bowstrings. "Let's get this over with."

A towering monstrosity, easily thirty meters tall, with skin like molten stone veined with frozen magma. Every movement exhaled steam and crackling embers. The long blade he wielded was forged of magma-infused ore—so vast it scraped against the ground, hissing and carving trails of fire.

Its glowing eyes locked onto them.

"He's big," Kai muttered, already casting , and .

"Don't worry," Shouko smirked, stepping forward and drawing her golden spear.

The boss roared—shoulders heaving with volcanic fury—and swung the sword sideways in a wide arc.

Kai immediately cast to avoid the sweep, while launching from above, watching as frozen spears pelted the boss's shoulders and slowed its movements. Steam hissed violently where ice met molten skin.

Shouko darted in, her golden spear glowing with buffs as she slammed into the boss's knee—agile and aggressive. Her attacks chipped into the runes engraved on its legs, drawing its ire.

"Draw aggro!" she called out.

"I'm trying!" Kai yelled, casting to knock the boss back, to no affect except dealing few HP it lost.

The Tyrant bellowed and slammed its fist on one side of a wall—summoning four magma clad rocky arms through the air that lashed outward like whips. One caught Kai mid-flight, slamming him into a jagged wall.

"Okay," he growled from the impact. "That hurt. It f*cking took quite a bit of my HP"

surged from his fingers, crackling across the boss's shoulder and causing its molten armour to harden and fracture. Shouko used the opportunity to vault off one of the arms and land a deep slash into the monster's back.

Then the Tyrant raised its sword overhead. The runes on its body lit up blindingly red.

Kai's eyes widened. "It's moving!"

The ground beneath them cracked as the blade fell—an earth-splitting cleave of molten rock and fire. The entire chamber quaked. Lava splashed skyward like geysers.

Kai took the full brunt of the outer wave, but his dual layers of shielding kept him upright with quite a loss of HP. Shouko had dodged just in time, leaping onto a pillar before firing arrows straight into the boss's eye.

"Now!" she yelled.

Kai cast —three shadowy versions of himself appeared on either flank and behind the Tyrant, their forms flickering with dark mist. He didn't have time to waste.

The Tyrant's anger surged, sensing its impending defeat.

Kai barked out the command mentally—

All three versions of himself acted in tandem, launching icy lances that streaked across the chamber. The projectiles struck true, crashing into the Tyrant's chest.

The Doppelgangers cracked and dissipated instantly, fading into smoke. 'A great spell that's demon race exclusive but they can only be used to cast a single spell each or a skill once before they disappear.,' Kai reminded himself.

The Tyrant screamed—not in pain, but in defiance.

The ground beneath their feet began to tremble violently.

As the Tyrant of the Flames invoked its special skill, .

A wave of explosion of flame burst outward in all directions with the Tyrant at the centre—searing and wild. Lava surged upward from the explosion in the chamber floor, spiraling around the room, as they collected behind the Tyrant, forming an illusion of a setting sun. The ground shook violently as magma geysers erupted from beneath, blanketing the room in a flood of liquid flame.

"Fall back!" Kai shouted, casting to dodge a column of rising fire.

Shouko dashed to the side, spinning through a wall of heat with , her form wreathed in golden light as she hurled her bow turned spear forward—just as the lava reached her heels.

The battle raged on, as Kai summoned monsters, demons, and undeads to keep the Tyrant in check.

 ******

After what felt like eternity – Shouko dropped from the air like a falling star. Her golden spear surged with blinding divine(Or Holy) light.

She plunged the weapon straight into the Tyrant's forehead.

A shudder ran through the boss's colossal form. Its eyes dimmed, the flames flickered, and then, finally—

The Tyrant collapsed with a tremendous roar. Molten rock cracked apart as its body disintegrated into obsidian shards and ashen mist, its throne crumbling behind it like a mirage.

The room grew quiet.

Only the faint hiss of dying lava remained.

Kai stood staring at the disappearing body of the Tyrant, as he spoke. "It was a great battle."

Shouko smiled, resting her spear against her shoulder. "You didn't get impaled this time."

He grinned. "I suppose, I've made some progress on that department."

Together, they walked toward the loot, the flames of the battlefield still crackling behind them.

His heart was still racing, the rush of combat clinging to his breath. It had been intense—chaotic, even—but for once, it didn't feel empty. The silence that followed wasn't lonely. Just... peaceful.

Not a bad day, he thought.

And in that moment, under the blistering heat of the dungeon, Kai smiled.
