"In a manner of speaking," Nathan confirmed. "The Shadow Council has been getting more aggressive in recent years, more bold. They came close to discovering my father's identity several times. He knew it was time to pass the responsibility to the next generation."
"To you," I said.
"To me," Nathan agreed. "Though it's more complicated than that. You see, the Morrison family – we're all born with the potential to be Sovereign Guardians. But each Guardian is matched to a specific royal heir. My father was matched to your mother. My grandfather was matched to her father. And so on, going back generations."
I leaned forward, fascinated despite myself. "But you said you didn't know I was your... your match. How is that possible if your family has been protecting mine for so long?"
