Chapter 13: Jemm's Unfortunate Headaches
The D.E.O.'s investigation into "the Glitch" was a low hum in the background of my existence. Alex Danvers' frustration was palpable even through the news reports; she was a woman used to answers, and I was providing nothing but questions. My last little coffee shop 'performance' for Kara had, by all accounts, worked perfectly. She was intrigued, not alarmed. That was a win.
The immediate concern, however, was Jemm. The telepathic Martian was escalating his attacks, abducting more people, getting bolder. Kara was on his trail, but I knew what was coming. Jemm's psychic powers were potent, and Supergirl hadn't yet learned how to effectively counter them. This wasn't just about an advantage; it was about ensuring her well-being without completely stepping on her learning curve.
"Alright, Jemm," I thought, watching a frantic news update about another kidnapping. "You're about to experience the cosmic equivalent of a really bad Tuesday. Courtesy of your friendly neighborhood imp-hybrid who knows all your weaknesses. Specifically, your weakness to crippling migraines and an inexplicable urge to tap dance." The gleam in my eyes was purely mischievous. The Burden of Power was heavy, yes, but it also came with a certain degree of creative freedom. And a dash of gleeful sadism for the bad guys.
My plan for Jemm was multi-faceted, focusing on Sensory Illusion and a subtle application of Minor Biokinesis. I wasn't going to fight him directly. I was going to make his life a living hell. A mind-bending, reality-warping, incredibly irritating hell.
The news showed Supergirl tracking Jemm to an abandoned warehouse. The fight began, a blur of motion against the flickering lights. Jemm's telepathic attacks hit Kara hard; I could almost feel the psychic pressure from my distant vantage point. Kara stumbled, clutching her head.
"Not on my watch, you overgrown headlamp," I snarled, my focus sharpening.
[SKILL: MINOR BIOKINESIS (LVL 2). APPLICATION: NEURO-MUSCULAR DISTURBANCE. FOCUS: TARGETED HEADACHE AND DIZZINESS.]
I pictured Jemm's brain, his neural pathways, and then, with immense concentration, I nudged them. Not to damage. Just to… irritate. To create the sensation of a sudden, splitting headache. A wave of intense nausea. A subtle but overwhelming sense of vertigo. Enough to throw off his concentration, to make him question his own sanity, but not enough to be truly debilitating for long. This was a mental prank, a cosmic wedgie for an arrogant alien.
Mid-telepathic attack, Jemm suddenly froze. His hands flew to his temples, his glowing red eyes widening in confusion. He swayed, a low groan escaping him. Kara, confused but ever-alert, took advantage of the momentary lapse, launching a fierce punch that sent him reeling.
"Excellent," I thought, a surge of power draining from me, replaced by a quiet satisfaction. "The first dose. Now, for the garnish."
[SKILL: SENSORY ILLUSION (LVL 3). APPLICATION: AUDITORY AND OLFACTORY DISTORTION. FOCUS: ANNOYANCE AND DISORIENTATION.]
As Jemm tried to recover, I unleashed a barrage of targeted illusions. I made his immediate vicinity smell faintly, but persistently, of stale cabbage and wet dog. Simultaneously, his comms, or wherever his telepathic thoughts resonated, would be filled with the sound of a thousand tiny bells clanging out of sync, punctuated by the occasional, inexplicably loud squeak of a rusty swing set. Then, for good measure, I would add a brief, intense illusion of tiny, invisible pixies doing a synchronized Irish jig right in his peripheral vision. Pure, unadulterated nonsense designed to destabilize his highly focused mental state.
Jemm cried out, clutching his head again, his movements becoming erratic. He swung wildly, seemingly at empty air, trying to swat away the invisible distractions. The D.E.O. agents watching the feed were utterly bewildered.
"What is happening?" Alex's voice crackled through a comms channel I was discreetly listening in on. "Jemm's vitals are fluctuating. He's… disoriented. Did Supergirl…?"
Kara, meanwhile, was clearly bewildered by Jemm's sudden erratic behavior, but she didn't question her good fortune. She pressed her advantage, unleashing a powerful combination of blows, ultimately overpowering the disoriented alien. Jemm, still clutching his head, was finally knocked unconscious.
"Another one bites the dust," I murmured, wiping sweat from my brow. That had taken a lot of energy, maintaining simultaneous, targeted illusions and biokinetic effects. But seeing Kara standing over the defeated alien, a new confidence radiating from her, was worth it.
Alex Danvers' post-mission briefing on the news was a masterpiece of controlled bewilderment. "Subject Jemm displayed highly unusual and inexplicable physiological and psychological distress during the confrontation," she stated, her jaw tight. "Our medical teams found no external cause for the sudden onset of severe disorientation, nausea, and… olfactory hallucinations. It was almost as if… an unseen force was actively undermining his mental state."
"An unseen force, you say? Why, Agent Danvers, you wound me," I thought, a tired but triumphant grin spreading across my face. "I prefer 'the universe's answer to a practical joke.' And you're just a pawn in my magnificent, benevolent absurdity." The D.E.O. was getting closer. Not to me, perhaps, but to the idea of me. And that, in its own strange way, was a victory.
