Chapter 25 - The Rusty Bridge's Rebirth

Alaric sighed. This is going to be a long, long city optimization. But at least I'll have plenty of help. And plenty of embarrassing secrets. He placed his hand on the rusty iron railing of the bridge. The metal hummed, the rust flaked away, and the dull iron began to gleam with an impossible, Adamantine luster. Silverhaven's optimization had officially begun.

The transparent slime jiggled on his other shoulder. "Optimal aesthetic appeal! For research!" it squeaked, perfectly mimicking Alaric's thought.

Alaric groaned. "You! You little... you're going to be in charge of 'optimal aesthetic appeal' research! And I'll make you wear a tiny hard hat!"

The slime jiggled, then let out a tiny, perfectly pitched, defiant giggle.

Below them, the murky, stagnant river flowed sluggishly. It reeked of decay and forgotten refuse, a true D-Rank body of water. And maybe, just maybe, I can refine the water beneath it to be optimally transparent. For research into aquatic life, of course. And perhaps, for optimal visibility of... anything that might be lurking beneath the surface. For tactical reasons.

"Alright, you two! Lyra, Finn! And you, Imp!" Alaric announced, his voice echoing slightly over the river. Lyra, still looking a little dreamy but now with a determined glint in her eye, stood ready. Finn clutched his pickaxe, looking at the bridge with a mixture of awe and terror. The Imp Familiar chirped from Alaric's shoulder, its tiny wings fluttering. "This is our first major project. The Rusty Bridge. We're going to optimize it. For optimal structural integrity. And optimal aesthetic appeal."

He began with the railing, his hand sweeping along the length of it. The rust vanished in shimmering motes, the pitted iron smoothed, and the dull metal transformed into gleaming, indestructible Adamantine. The railing hummed with a faint, pure energy.

System Notification: [Basic Material Refinement] activated. Material: Rusty Iron Railing (D-Rank Iron). Result: Perfected 'Adamantine Guard Rail' (SSS-Tier Artifact). Condition: Indestructible, Self-Cleaning, Emits Aura of 'Unwavering Support'.

"Unwavering Support? Nice," Alaric hummed. "Now adventurers won't fall off. Unless they're suboptimally coordinated."

He moved to the crumbling stone pillars. One by one, he placed his hands on them, channeling his skill. The cracked, moss-covered stones vibrated, the impurities flowing out, and the rough surfaces became impossibly smooth, gleaming with an inner light. The pillars transformed into towering structures of pure, white marble, radiating an aura of ancient strength.

System Notification: [Basic Material Refinement] activated. Material: Crumbling Stone Pillar (D-Rank Stone). Result: Perfected 'Pillar of Eternal Stability' (SSS-Tier Artifact). Condition: Indestructible, Self-Repairing, Emits Aura of 'Ancient Wisdom'.

"Ancient Wisdom? Even better," Alaric grinned. "Maybe they'll give advice to passing adventurers. 'Don't forget your mana potions, young one!' Or 'Always check for traps, even the optimally refined ones!'"

Lyra, who had been watching with wide eyes, cautiously approached a newly refined pillar. She ran her hand over its smooth surface. "Master Alaric! It's... it's beautiful! And it feels so... wise!"

Finn, however, was still staring at the glowing bridge with a terrified expression. "Sir! The bridge is changing! I apologize! I'm not good with changing bridges!"

"It's optimal transformation, Finn," Alaric said with a sigh. "Now, Imp, you're on reconnaissance. I need you to scout the river below. Look for any D-Rank materials. And any... interesting aquatic life. For research."

The Imp Familiar chirped, then zipped off, a tiny black blur, darting down towards the murky river. The transparent slime on Alaric's shoulder jiggled. "Interesting aquatic life! For research!" it squeaked, perfectly mimicking Alaric's thought.

Alaric groaned. "You! You're going to be in charge of 'optimal aquatic life' research! And I'll make you wear tiny goggles!"

The slime jiggled, then let out a tiny, perfectly pitched, defiant giggle.

Alaric spent the next few hours systematically refining the entire Rusty Bridge. The decrepit wooden planks became 'Polished Adamantine Planks' that hummed faintly. The crumbling arches transformed into 'Arches of Ethereal Strength' that shimmered with a rainbow of colors. The entire bridge, once a symbol of decay, became a breathtaking marvel of engineering and aesthetics, radiating a powerful, harmonious aura.

System Notification: Structure: [Rusty Bridge] has been fully optimized. Condition: Perfected 'Bridge of Eternal Glory' (SSS-Tier Artifact). Provides Safe Passage, Emits Aura of 'Inspirational Grandeur', Minor Side Effect: Causes Overwhelming Urge to Cross (Repeatedly).

"Bridge of Eternal Glory? Causes Overwhelming Urge to Cross?" Alaric chuckled. "Nice. Tourists are going to love this. And probably get stuck in a loop of crossing it. Optimal tourism revenue!"

Just then, the Imp Familiar zipped back up, landing on Alaric's shoulder, chirping excitedly. Master! Master! I found something! In the river! A very large, very old, very... suboptimal object! And it has a faint, perverted aura!

Alaric's eyes widened. A perverted aura? In the river? This is new. And intriguing. "Lead the way, Imp," Alaric said, a predatory grin spreading across his face. "Time for some optimal aquatic exploration. And optimal perverted artifact retrieval."

He made his way to the riverbank, Lyra and Finn cautiously following. The Imp Familiar darted ahead, hovering over a particularly murky section of the water.

System Notification: Item Detected: [Submerged, Unknown Object (D-Rank Material)]. Condition: Ancient, Corroded, Emits Faint 'Perverted Aura'.

"A perverted aura, huh?" Alaric hummed, pulling out his 'Lens of Universal Perception'. He held it over the murky water, focusing. The lens shimmered, cutting through the murk, revealing a large, corroded, metallic object at the bottom of the river. It looked like some kind of ancient, broken statue. But its form... it was undeniably suggestive. A female figure, in a highly provocative pose, covered in barnacles and rust.

System Notification: Item Identified: [Ancient Statue of Lust (D-Rank Corroded Metal)]. Condition: Broken, Corroded, Submerged, Emits Strong 'Perverted Aura'.

Alaric nearly choked. "Ancient Statue of Lust?! Submerged?! Emits Strong 'Perverted Aura'?! Holy crap! This is amazing! This is the ultimate pervert artifact! For research, of course! To study the historical context of perversion!"

The transparent slime on his other shoulder jiggled wildly. "Optimal perverted artifact retrieval! For research! To study the historical context of perversion!" it squeaked, perfectly mimicking Alaric's thought, its giggles now echoing across the river.

Alaric groaned. "You! You little... you are definitely getting that tiny hard hat now! And a tiny, optimally flexible, demon maid outfit!"

He turned to Lyra and Finn. "Alright, you two! New task! We need to retrieve this 'Submerged, Unknown Object'! It's very important for Silverhaven's cultural history! For optimal historical preservation!"

Lyra, still a little dreamy from the mana pool, nodded. "Optimal historical preservation, Master Alaric!"

Finn, however, looked terrified. "S-sir! I apologize! I'm not good with murky water! What if there are... murky things in it?!"

"Don't worry, Finn," Alaric said, pulling out his 'Net of Unseen Capture'. "We'll be optimally prepared. And Imp, you're on retrieval duty. Use your 'Optimal Service' to pull it up. Carefully. We don't want to damage any... historical details." He winked at the Imp.

The Imp Familiar chirped, then zipped down into the murky water, a tiny black blur. Alaric watched, a triumphant, slightly manic grin on his face. This was going to be a very interesting retrieval. And a very, very public one, if the slime had anything to say about it.
