Chapter 2 - outcasts

It's finally lunch time and boy am I starving.

I pack up my books and stuff them into my bag. I haven't gotten a locker yet because the one I was supposed to use has a problem with the lock.

I wait for Bridget to finish packing her things so we could head to the cafeteria.

"Noelle," I look at her "do you want to be my friend?"

I stand there shocked as to why Bridget would want to be friends with me.

"I..I..I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked. Forget I even said anything."

I blink twice, clearly surprised that Bridget would want to be friends with lil old me.

"Bridget are you sure you want to be friends with me?" I genuinely ask because my friendships in the past haven't been quite rosy and sweet like friendships you see on TV or on novels. "I do want to be your friend but hope you won't find me weird later?"

"Of course not stupid. We'll be weird together." Bridget really is one heck of a bubbly girl.

"Come with me, friend." She says, emphasizing on the 'friend' more than she did other words.

We join the line of students who queued up to get food from the lunch ladies in the cafeteria.

Mmm..mashed potatoes and gravy, my favorite.

We collect our portion of food from the lunch lady and head to go sit down but instead of Bridget to go sit where other kids were sitting, she goes to sit down in an isolated corner…near the dumpster. Gross.

"So, let me break down the social classes in the school." Bridget said looking at me shining her 32 with her braces still lining them. "Over there are the popular kids" I turn my head and see a table with kids pressing really expensive iPhones, wearing really cool branded clothes and the girls had their nails done.

"Over there are the jocks,"

"Wait, aren't the jocks supposed to be part of the popular kids?" I asked out of sheer curiosity.

"Ohh, yes. They were together but one of the jock guys and one the popular girls were in a relationship and let's just say that it didn't end well."

Yikes.

"You see those three girls over there?" I turned to the direction Bridget was pointing and I saw three girls with makeup that made them look like clowns. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating it a little too much but if you want to apply makeup, learn to apply it well you know. Some of us have eyes that'd rather want to enjoy the beauty of God's creation that let my eyes feed on things that'd probably give me nightmares for weeks.

"Those girls look stupid." I say

"Tell me about it. Over there are the nerds."

"Wait, aren't we supposed to be part of the nerd social group?"

"No silly, I don't belong in any of the social groups I just mentioned."

I look at her wondering what in the world she was saying. "I'm an outcast."

"A what?"

"An outcast."

What's an outcast. This is me thinking to myself.

"An outcast is someone who doesn't fit in anywhere."

"Shoot, did I think out loud? I'm sorry." I say mentally face palming myself for almost ruining my first friendship since the incident.

"Don't be sorry. Your facial expression gave you away and I just thought to explain it to you." She explained. "I'm glad you're my friend and we get to be outcasts together."

"Cheesy much. But we're not the outcasts you know? We're the normal ones and they are the outcasts."

"Now look who the cheesy one is."

We both laugh as we face our food to start eating.

While we were eating, the door dramatically opens and dare I say that the finest looking guys I have ever set my eyes on came in, causing literally every girl in the room to make dreamy eyes- well, everyone except me and Bridget. She gave them the stink eye which was really weird because I've only ever seen her smile.

"Who are those guys?"

"Ohh those? They are in the social group called the bad boys and even the popular kids don't come close to the influence they have over thus school." Ohhh, that's why the girls were going crazy right now.

"Just do your best to stay away from them."

"You don't have to tell me twice. I avoid the word 'drama' like a plague so you have nothing to worry about. "

I turn back to start eating when I notice one of the guys start to approach us.

"Code red. Code red." Bridget whisper-screamed.

I try to turn back and I see one of the Mr bad boys standing by our table. Weird.

"Hey there tiny woman, I haven't seen your face around here." He says, smiling at me and for some reason, his smile was making me uncomfortable.

"First of I'm not tiny." Okay, maybe I am but he doesn't get to tell me that. You think I don't know already? " Second, it's because I'm new. Bridget, let's go."

I take Bridget's hand and storm out of the cafeteria but the main reason I did that was so that I could get away from him.

"Tiny woman's feisty."

I turn back and glare at him but Mr bad boy just stood there smiling at him with his forearms folded.

Boy do I want to slap that smile off his face. Who does he think he is to call me tiny.

"Hey Noelle, don't get angry at what he said. You're not tiny."

"Oh shut up." I say playfully "you're only saying that because we're both the same height.

"His name is Trevor and he's the one you should stay the farthest from among the bad boys."

"I think that's gonna be a problem because I don't think he's going to forget my face so quickly."

Oh God!! I say as I use my book to cover my face.
