Chapter 13 - Chapter 12

Author's POV...

"Come on, we need to reach Eldervale Village before nightfall."

Maelis Ravencourt's voice cut through the rhythmic sound of hooves striking the forest path. He rode at the front, seated on a majestic black horse whose coat shimmered like polished obsidian under the fading daylight. The animal moved with discipline and pride, mirroring its rider.

Six years had passed in what felt like the blink of an eye.

Maelis Ravencourt was no longer the fourteen-year-old Crown Prince burdened by fate and prophecy. At twenty, he had grown into a man who commanded respect effortlessly. His long silvery hair flowed freely down his back, occasionally tied with a dark ribbon, catching the wind as he rode. His posture was straight, regal, and calm, as if the world itself aligned when he took the lead.

He looked unreal. Almost untouchable.

Behind him marched Ravencourt's elite soldiers, followed closely by the princes and princesses who had once been hostages. Time had softened sharp edges, rewritten hatred, and replaced rivalry with camaraderie. What once was fear had turned into loyalty, and what once was jealousy had become friendship.

On Maelis right side rode Riven.

At sixteen, Riven no longer resembled the thin, neglected boy who once slept in stables. His body had grown tall and well-built from years of training. His shoulders were broad, his movements precise, and his presence carried quiet authority. His dark hair framed a face that had matured sharply, his jawline defined, his eyes steady yet observant.

He rode with ease, keeping pace with Maelis without effort.

So much had changed.

Those who once bullied Riven now laughed with him. Those who once feared Maelis now trusted him. The plot had twisted, bent, and reshaped itself under Maelis influence.

This mission was proof of that change.

A week earlier, the King of Ravencourt had summoned them. A group of bandits had been terrorizing Eldervale Village, looting supplies and threatening civilians. The village head had pleaded for aid, and the King had entrusted Maelis with the task.

It was not just a mission.

It was a test.

The princes and princesses had completed their training. According to Ravencourt law, this would be their first and last joint mission. After its completion, their hostage period would officially end. They would be free to return to their kingdoms.

A quiet end to a long chapter.

As the group entered the edge of the Darkroot Forest, the atmosphere shifted. Towering ancient trees blocked much of the sunlight, their thick roots twisting through the earth like veins. The air was cool, heavy with the scent of damp soil and pine.

Maelis lifted his gaze.

The sky had begun to darken, clouds gathering slowly above the forest canopy. The wind grew colder.

He raised his hand.

"Halt."

The entire group stopped immediately.

"We cannot proceed further today," Maelis said calmly. "It will be dark soon, and everyone looks exhausted. We will camp here for the night."

"Yes, Crown Prince!" everyone replied in unison.

The clearing they chose was wide and protected, surrounded by tall trees that formed a natural barrier. The ground was relatively flat, covered in dry grass and fallen leaves. A small stream flowed nearby, its gentle sound adding peace to the air.

Soldiers quickly moved into action.

Some began setting up tents, securing them firmly to the ground. Guards prepared the perimeter, posting watch at key points. Others gathered firewood, stacking logs carefully at the center of the clearing.

Maelis tent was placed slightly apart, near the edge of the clearing, offering both privacy and a clear view of the surroundings.

As the bonfire was lit, warm orange flames danced against the darkening forest, casting long shadows across the ground. The crackling sound of burning wood mixed with low chatter and soft laughter.

The atmosphere felt strangely peaceful.

Maelis dismounted and stood quietly, observing his team. Princes helped princesses with tent ropes. Soldiers exchanged jokes while preparing rations. Laughter echoed softly, blending with the night sounds of the forest.

He smiled.

This was not how the story was supposed to go.

Unbeknownst to him, someone was watching.

Riven stood a short distance away, arms crossed loosely, his gaze fixed on Maelis. The firelight reflected in his eyes, making them appear darker, deeper. His expression was calm, but there was something intense beneath it.

"Do not stare at our Crown Prince like that, Riven."

Caleb's teasing voice broke the moment as he dropped a bundle of firewood near the bonfire. "I know he is the most beautiful view here."

Riven's jaw tightened.

Lucien snorted as he approached, crossing his arms. "Hey, do not you dare call the Crown Prince beautiful in front of Riven. Do you have a death wish?"

Kael laughed, draping an arm casually over Riven's shoulder. "Seriously, Caleb. Do you love your life or not? Everyone knows Riven is the strongest soldier here."

Elric stepped forward, pointing dramatically at a faint scar on his forehead. "Remember when I tried to sit beside the Crown Prince during training? He literally punched me. Look, the scar is still here."

The group burst into laughter.

Riven sighed, clearly used to this by now.

"Idiots," he muttered, brushing Kael's arm away. His expression softened almost instantly as he turned toward Maelis.

The contrast was startling.

The same boy who radiated danger to others now walked toward Maelis with a gentle smile, almost puppy-like.

"Crown Prince," Riven said respectfully, stopping just outside Maelis' tent. "The food is ready. Do you want me to bring it to you?"

Maelis turned, surprised slightly, then nodded. "Yes. Thank you, Riven."

Riven smiled wider, nodded, and hurried off.

Maelis stepped inside his tent, unaware of the silent gaze following him even as the forest settled into night.

The bonfire burned steadily.

The forest whispered.

And destiny waited patiently, watching the path slowly change.
