Somewhere in Konohagakure

"Iwate… have you made up your mind?" Fugaku asked, staring directly into Uchiha Iwate's eyes.

After a brief silence, Iwate nodded. "Yes, Fugaku-sama… I will support you."

Hearing those words, Fugaku smiled. "Very good…" 'With this, I've gained the support of another jōnin,' he thought, pleased with the result.

"Alright then," Fugaku said aloud. "Since you've agreed, there is no turning back now."

"I understand," Iwate replied with a firm nod.

With Iwate's support, Fugaku now had six jōnin on his side. Two of them were Uchiha Makoto and Uchiha Seiji, and he had already secured three other jōnin as well.

In addition to the jōnin, he had also managed to sway a fair number of chūnin into his camp.

Overall, he was quite satisfied with the progress.

'I just need to keep going like this… soon enough, almost the entire clan will support me instead of that bastard and that bitch,' he thought, feeling a surge of confidence.

He could already picture it, the moment he would finally put Kanzou and Mikoto in their place.

"I'm assigning you to work alongside Seiji," Fugaku continued. "The two of you will look for more like-minded individuals within the clan."

Both Seiji and Iwate nodded, "Understood…"

Satisfied, Fugaku waved his hand. "Alright… It's getting late. You should all return to your positions and homes."

All six jōnin nodded and prepared to leave, but Fugaku called out, "Makoto… stay behind."

Uchiha Makoto paused, glanced at him, and nodded. "Understood."

The others exchanged brief looks before departing.

Once he was alone with Makoto, Fugaku asked, "Did you find anything? What is that bastard Kanzou planning?"

He was, of course, referring to the possibility of a coup.

Makoto shook his head. "I've been trying to snoop around, but so far there's been no sign of anything unusual. Everything seems normal, except that he hasn't been appearing in public very much lately."

"Not appearing in public…?" Fugaku muttered, narrowing his eyes as he thought it over.

'Why wouldn't he show himself?' Then a possibility struck him. 'Could it be… his Mangekyō Sharingan is losing its sight?'

Fugaku knew that the Mangekyō Sharingan lost its light with every use, but he had no idea how long that light could actually last. So he couldn't be certain whether Kanzou was hiding because his eyesight was failing… or if something else entirely was going on.

If that really was the case, then the opportunity to strike was drawing closer and closer. After all, without his Mangekyō Sharingan, there was no way Kanzou could possibly stand against the rest of the village.

But Fugaku, having been fooled once already, refused to lower his guard. He wasn't going to make another move without proper confirmation.

'Better to stay cautious… Knowing him, he might be planning something,' Fugaku thought.

In truth, while his caution wasn't entirely misplaced, since Kanzou wasn't going blind at all, Fugaku was also overthinking things. Kanzou wasn't plotting any grand scheme. The only reason he hadn't appeared in public lately was that he had been completely absorbed in creating the Mark of Ownership. Even now, he was simply studying other Fūinjutsu. There was no elaborate plot or strategy behind his absence whatsoever.

Unaware of all that, Fugaku instructed Makoto, "Try to find out why he hasn't been appearing in public lately."

"I'll do what I can," Makoto nodded.

Fugaku shifted to his next concern. "What about Tsubaki-san? Any progress with her?"

Makoto shook his head again. "I tried to gauge her attitude… but I don't think she'll join us. If anything, approaching her might expose everything."

Since Kanzou had personally forgiven her for failing to stop the intruder (Minato), Tsubaki had developed a strong sense of appreciation for him as the patriarch.

In her view, even if Kanzou was ruthless, violent, arrogant, or merciless toward outsiders, he was fair, and even forgiving, toward his own clansmen, so long as they remained loyal. The fact that he hadn't blamed her at all for that failure was proof enough for Tsubaki.

Because of this, her loyalty toward him had noticeably strengthened, something Makoto immediately picked up on.

Knowing this, he hadn't even attempted to reveal their plans to her.

Besides, he had known Tsubaki since they were young and understood her quite well; she was not the type of Kunoichi who would betray the clan's patriarch, regardless of who held the position. At best, she would have remained neutral.

But now, especially after gaining a favorable impression of Kanzou, her loyalty was only stronger.

"If it's hopeless… then forget it…" said Fugaku, sighing. Although having the support of an Elite Jōnin would have certainly helped his cause… exposure isn't something he could risk at the moment.

Makoto nodded. "Is there anything else, Fugaku-sama?"

Fugaku shook his head. "Nothing. You may go."

Makoto bowed respectfully and headed out.

As he watched him leave, Fugaku clenched his fist tightly.

'Very soon… I'll regain everything that should have been mine. And then… I'll make every last one of those traitors pay,' he vowed silently.

The hatred festering in his heart toward those who had betrayed him was far from satisfied. And he had no intention of letting it fade.

Uchiha Police Station,

"Well then, Makoto-san… I'll take over the shift from here. You can head home," Tsubaki said.

Remembering his earlier conversation with Fugaku, Makoto hesitated and glanced at her, as though he wanted to say something.

Noticing that look immediately, Tsubaki asked, "Did you want to talk about something?"

Makoto considered it for a moment… but since he had already told Fugaku she wouldn't agree, he decided not to bring it up. He simply shook his head. "No… nothing. Good night. Don't push yourself too hard, and make sure you go home on time."

"Go home? For what?" Tsubaki snorted. "It's not like anyone is waiting for me." With her husband and child long gone, work was the only thing keeping her moving forward, and she had no intention of slowing down.

Instead, she turned the advice back on him. "You're the one who should listen to that, Makoto-san. You have a wife and daughter waiting. If you keep Nashiko waiting every night, it'll strain your relationship. And Mira-chan, little girls need their fathers too, you know."

Makoto gave an awkward smile and scratched the back of his head. "Yes… I'll try."

"Hm." Tsubaki nodded with a small smile and waved him off.

With that, Makoto gathered his things and headed home toward the Uchiha Compound.

When he arrived, he pressed the doorbell.

Ding-dong.

The door slid open a moment later, revealing his wife, Nashiko, still in her familiar apron.

But instead of her usual warm smile, she wore a tense, uneasy expression. "Anata-sama…" she whispered, eyes trembling as she looked at him.

Makoto frowned immediately. "What's wrong?"

Nashiko lowered her gaze. "There are… guests waiting for you inside."

"Guests?" Makoto repeated. Judging from his wife's anxious expression, a bad premonition tightened in his chest. He quickly stepped inside, only to freeze the moment he saw who was waiting. "M–Mikoto-sama…?"

Mikoto was seated on the sofa, gently cradling his daughter Mira in her lap. When Makoto spoke her name, she lifted her head from playing with the child and smiled softly.

"Ara… look, Mira-chan. Your Otou-sama is home."

"Otou-sama, welcome home," Mira chirped, waving her hand.

Makoto forced a slightly stiff smile as he replied, "Y-yeah… I'm back." Then he looked at Mikoto, uneasy. "Mikoto-sama… for you to be here this late at night… won't the Patriarch be worried?"

"Indeed, my presence here this late is unusual," Mikoto said with a gentle smile. "But don't worry, Makoto-san… I'm here with my Danna-sama's permission."

"I… I see…" Makoto murmured.

A heavy silence settled over the room, tight, suffocating, until the sound of a sliding door broke it.

Shff—click.

Makoto turned sharply.

Hazuki stood at the entrance, quietly closing the door… sealing the way out.

His gaze darted to the window. Two masked figures stood there, motionless, each with a pair of three-tomoe Sharingan in their sockets that gleamed back at him.

He was surrounded. There was no escape, especially not when he was completely alone. Even Nashiko couldn't help him; she was a civilian, helpless in a situation like this.

The masked operatives outside were dangerous but still manageable… even Hazuki could be fought, if he pushed himself. Barely.

But the real threat sat calmly on the sofa, smiling softly as she cradled his daughter in her lap.

Uchiha Mikoto.

And Mira, his precious little girl, sat nestled comfortably in Mikoto's lap, completely unaware of the fact that she had been held hostage.

With Mira held hostage, and Nashiko being a civilian completely unable to fight, Makoto had no options left.

A cold dread crept up his spine. He swallowed, mouth dry, mind racing. He briefly considered reaching for the weapon in his shinobi bag… but Mikoto's hand rested lightly around Mira's neck. He wasn't certain he could move even a fraction of a second before she snapped his daughter's throat.

He froze, helpless.

Then, breaking the tense silence, Mikoto spoke in a pleasant, gentle voice, one that only made the situation more terrifying.

"By the way, Makoto-san, your daughter Mira-chan is really cute… and to think she is also truly talented and smart…" Mikoto praised, patting the girl's head. "She always gets top marks in the Academy. And when I taught her a few things she must always remember as a kunoichi of the Uchiha Clan… she memorised them instantly. I am impressed."

Makoto tried to speak… but couldn't speak at all…

Mikoto ignored him and smiled sweetly at the girl, praising her, "Mira-chan… you really are amazing…"

The little girl who hadn't yet sensed the tense atmosphere puffed out her chest proudly and nodded. "Of course! Mira is the best!"

"Fufu… indeed, Mira-chan is the best." Mikoto smiled softly before continuing in a gentle tone, "Mira-chan, why don't you tell Makoto-san the things I taught you? You remember them, right?"

"Naturally," Mira nodded confidently. She turned to her father and recited, word for word, what Mikoto had taught her: "Etoo… A traitor is worse than scum… a traitor, no matter how close, must be punished. I must always remain loyal to Kanzou-sama. Only what Kanzou-sama says is right… Only what he does is right. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong… anyone who opposes Kanzou-sama is an enemy… and a traitor. Anyone who betrays Kanzou-sama deserves to die… even if that person is family, they still deserve to die."

With every word Mira recited, Makoto's face grew paler and paler.

Mikoto, however, didn't seem the slightest bit bothered. She brought her hands together and praised the girl brightly, "Perfect."

"Ehehe…" Mira giggled happily before turning to her father. "Otou-sama… did I do good?"

Makoto couldn't force out a single word. His entire body felt cold, rigid, frozen in place.

The little girl blinked at his silence, a faint frown forming as she noticed something off about him. "Otou-sama… are you listening?"

Makoto didn't answer her. Instead, he looked toward Mikoto. "Mikoto-sama, plea—"

But Mikoto cut him off smoothly, turning to Mira. "Mira-chan… what would you do if you found out about an Uchiha who became a traitor and plotted against Kanzou-sama?"

"If someone like that existed in front of me… I would kill them," Mira replied instantly, without hesitation.

"Even if that person was your Otou-sama?" Mikoto asked.

"That's such a silly question, Mikoto-sama," Mira giggled. "Otou-sama isn't like that. He would never betray Kanzou-sama." Then she looked toward Makoto with an innocent smile. "Isn't that right, Otou-sama?"

But Makoto still didn't answer.

Mira's smile faltered, stiffening at the edges.

"Otou-sama…?" she called again, softer this time, yet no response came.

And this time… she seemed to sense that something was wrong.

"Well… perhaps Makoto-san didn't quite understand your question," Mikoto said softly, leaning down to whisper into the girl's ear. "Why don't you ask him again… clearly this time whether he betrayed Kanzou-sama…."

Mira swallowed, her voice trembling as she tried again. "Otou-sama… y-you… didn't betray Kanzou-sama, right? …Right?"

"Mikoto-sama… please, I—" Makoto began again, addressing Mikoto instead of his daughter.

But Mikoto cut him off again, her gaze still gentle as she spoke to Mira. "Maybe Makoto-san doesn't want to answer. Mira-chan… why don't you ask the same question to Nashiko-san? She might answer honestly… since she is the one who told me something about your Otou-sama's secret not long ago."

Makoto was stunned.

From Mikoto's words… it sounded as if Nashiko had told her everything.

"Nashiko… you…" He whispered, disbelief and hurt twisting in his voice.

At the sound of her name, Nashiko trembled. She didn't dare lift her head. She knew she had betrayed her husband, revealing something that should never have reached Mikoto's ears. But what choice did she have? She had to protect her daughter.

In her mind, Fugaku never stood a real chance. If he had awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, maybe there could have been hope… but without it? Absolutely impossible.

That was what she firmly believed.

Even as a civilian, she knew a few things about the Mangekyō Sharingan's power. When she was younger, her grandmother used to tell her stories of Uchiha Madara, of the terrifying strength he wielded. Her grandmother had served in Madara's household as a caretaker and maid, and had personally witnessed fragments of that overwhelming might.

From those stories alone, Nashiko understood one thing very clearly: Against Kanzou and Mikoto, both Mangekyō awakeners, no ordinary Uchiha could possibly win. Especially not Fugaku, who has already been defeated once.

So she made her choice… the only one she believed would keep her daughter alive.

Mira, still shaking, turned to her mother. "O-Okaa-sama… Otou-sama… h-he didn't… right?"

Nashiko said nothing at first, frozen in guilt and fear.

Then Mikoto's calm voice urged her, "Go on, Nashiko-san. Tell your daughter what you told me."

Forced to answer, Nashiko lifted her teary eyes and whispered, voice cracking: "It's true, Mira-chan… Y-your Otou-sama… he… he betrayed Kanzou-sama… h-he did…"

"Otou-sama, you… Are you a traitor?" Mira whispered, fear, sadness, and disbelief trembling in her voice.

Makoto sank to his knees. His wife had betrayed him and informed the enemy. His daughter was a hostage on Mikoto's lap. He was surrounded on all sides. There was nothing he could do, no path forward, no escape, no resistance that wouldn't end in his family's blood.

All that remained was to kneel… and give up.

'What a foolish thing to do… What was I even thinking…?' Makoto thought with a heavy, sinking sigh.

He had agreed to Fugaku's solicitation out of loyalty to the late Uchiha Dōma… and without truly considering his wife and daughter. No, perhaps he had considered them, but his dissatisfaction toward Kanzou's actions, fear that Uchiha would be annihilated if they continued to walk on the path that Kanzou was leading on, and the belief that Fugaku, working alongside the Hokage, would be the better choice had clouded his judgment.

But now, confronted with reality, that belief shattered instantly.

He finally understood just how utterly foolish he had been.

Who holds power, who takes control, who is right or wrong, none of that mattered.

The only thing that mattered was the safety of his wife and his daughter.

"I will do anything… any punishment… just please, please spare my wife and daughter. They… they had nothing to do with this…" he begged.

Even though his wife had betrayed him, Makoto didn't blame her. Now that he thought about it, his actions of joining Fugaku were foolish, and it was only natural for her to take the side that ensured their daughter's safety.

At his plea, both Nashiko and Mira trembled.

Hearing his desperate plea, Mikoto smiled… but there wasn't a single trace of mercy in her eyes. They were cold, icy, emotionless. To her, the man kneeling before her was someone who had betrayed her danna-sama. In her mind, he deserved to be impaled by a hundred spears, chopped into a thousand pieces & fed to dogs, and thrown into a pit filled with millions of red ants. Every instinct in her urged her to do it herself, to give him a death worse than an animal's.

But she restrained that impulse.

Her voice turned sharp and frigid as she spoke, "I need names," she said flatly. "And the reason why."

The reason wasn't particularly important, but she still wanted to hear it. Only by understanding what drove these people to betray Kanzou could she craft countermeasures to prevent such treachery in the future.

"I-I'll tell you everything…" Makoto nodded, defeated, and began to speak.
