Back in the Wandering Palace, Cate entered seclusion to begin working on the next steps of her plan. Now that she did not have hunger hindering her thoughts, she was able to see a path forward, and this allowed her to concentrate on solving the problem.
Cate now had two keys of chaos. These two were both keys of destiny. She only needed to find the remaining key of destiny, and she would then be able to unite them and form the Key of Destiny. She would still need to collect all the other keys, but by having the fully realized key of destiny, Cate would immediately become one of the most powerful beings in the world.
Only after three keys are united can their true power be brought out. It was said that the complete key of destiny had the power to change one's fate, manipulate luck, and do many other things long deemed impossible even by the gods. Cate was one step away from getting the complete key of destiny. Unfortunately, she did not know where the third key of destiny was hidden.
There were no rumors about who held this key. To find it, Cate would even end up searching for centuries more. This was not something Cate was willing to do. She felt that she had waited for far too long. Her revenge was already cold, and seeing it frozen was out of the question.
In her room, Cate meditated about the matter, and in the end, she decided that she needed to get the aid of an oracle. In the world of the supernatural, there were seers like Mary and oracles. Seers were witches/warlocks with the ability to see the future, but their sight was limited by the amount of magic in their blood and their comprehension of magic.
On the other hand, oracles would see countless paths into the future without any limitations except time. Some could see a few seconds into the future, while others could see hundreds of years down the line. A seer was a less powerful version of an oracle, but oracles were still seers as well. Oracles were born from seers.
All oracles are born as seers. A seer can then become an oracle by binding themselves into service to a divine being. This can be a god, a devil, or something else. The only requirement was that the person needed to have divine power and authority over one of the laws that hold creation. Mary had yet to bind herself to a god, and so she remained a seer.
She was not the only seer who chose to remain independent. Becoming an oracle means being beholden to the laws and desires of the chosen god. Oracles served in temples and served their god as they wished. Many seers found this to be too constraining, and so they chose to give up on becoming oracles.
Cate now needed an oracle, but she did not know where to start. Cate was an enemy of the gods. This was how she viewed herself. She understood that the gods only saw her as a nuisance since she did not have the power to qualify her as an enemy. If she went around asking oracles about the key of destiny, the gods were sure to get wind of this, and they would come down hard.
She needed to find an oracle who would not blubber to the gods. The best option was to find an oracle bound to a god who was isolated from the other gods. A god who could possibly look at Cate/Medusa and empathize with her path. In the end, Cate concluded that she needed to find an oracle bound to one of the evil gods.
Evil gods tended to stand on opposite sides to the benevolent gods, and this meant that there was some room for Cate to make a deal with such a god. After thinking about all the gods, Cate landed on Set. Set was the god of chaos, storms, desert, and violence. He was part of the Pantheon of Kemet.
Set almost always stood against the other gods, and this was all because of his way of doing things. Set did not have too many oracles, but Cate fortunately knew of a temple dedicated to this god. Apart from Set being evil and therefore more likely to look at Cate with favor, Cate had something that she could use to entice Set into a deal.
On her first mission with Avalon, Cate was sent to Congo to deal with a pyramid that showed up out of nowhere. In that pyramid, Cate and her team fought against two eyes that had gained consciousness. Cate managed to steal one of the eyes for herself while handing the other to Avalon. Over the years, Cate studied the eye and researched extensively, and in the end, she accepted that she had been right about the eye belonging to a god.
The eye had divine power and was indestructible no matter what was done to it. When Cate came back to her palace, she managed to bring the eye out of the immortal realm. She stored the eye in her Wandering Vault. Cate now had a use for the eye.
The reason Cate believed that she could reach an agreement with Set was because the eye she had belonged to Osiris, Set's brother. Set had in the past betrayed his brother out of jealousy. He killed Osiris and tore his body into forty-two pieces. Set then scattered the pieces all over the world.
Cate now understood that in order to ensure that his brother never returned from the dead, Set created pyramids and prisons for the pieces. The pyramid where Cate got her hands on the eyes was one of the prisons. Cate was sure that Set would want the eye back at all costs.
He had to make sure that his brother never returned. If Osiris, who was said to be more powerful than Set, returned from the betrayal that had held him for years, Set was sure to be in deep trouble. Even death would be a possibility at that time.
