The first warning came from the great hall.
A sharp crack echoed through the chamber as the protective glass surrounding Maelius's Heart fractured. The scholars working nearby recoiled, their instruments trembling upon the tables.
Then the artifact pulsed again.
A wave of pale blue light spread across the hall, washing over the marble pillars and ancient banners. Every lamp flickered. The guards stationed at the entrance reached for their weapons, uncertain whether they faced an attack or some disturbance of the old magic.
Mira was the first to approach.
"Everyone, move away from the pedestal."
The scholars obeyed, though several hesitated, unwilling to abandon their observations. One elderly researcher remained close enough to watch the Heart's surface.
"Lady Mira," he whispered. "There are markings appearing."
