Chapter 20 - The Inferno’s Descent (Part 1)

The Shadow of Destruction

It was not the cheering that lingered after the battle, nor even the cries of the wounded, but the hush that settled over the City of Beginning as the dawn bled slowly over the ramparts. I stood on the ruined wall, sweat and blood caking my skin, the bodies of the twelve slain beast lords sprawled beyond the gate. For a single breath, it seemed as if we had achieved the impossible. Humanity had endured.

But even before the alarms sounded, I sensed it—a pressure in the air so ancient, so crushing, that even the victorious defenders fell silent. The world itself seemed to draw in a terrified breath.

From beyond the burning horizon, a shadow larger than any nightmare swept across the sky, eclipsing the newborn sun.

A roar split the morning—so deep, so primal, it felt as if the very bones of the city trembled.

The Fire Dragon had arrived.

No language in any world could truly capture what soared above us now. The Fire Dragon was more than a spirit beast. It was a living embodiment of destruction—a force carved from magma and fury, ancient beyond measure. Its scales shimmered with the liquid glow of living fire, runes flickering across its body like the script of forgotten gods. Each wingbeat sent hurricanes roaring across the battered rooftops.

Its eyes, molten gold, gazed down at our city with the cold arrogance of a sovereign who had come to reclaim its domain.

The first breath it exhaled set the northern forest ablaze, fire leaping from tree to tree with unnatural speed. A wall of heat slammed against our broken walls, turning night's ashes into rivers of flame. Birds burst into cinders in midair. The river boiled.

Panic swept through the city. Children shrieked, mothers called their families, elders wept. Even our bravest guards hesitated, their hands shaking as they gripped spear or staff.

But I—Ye Caiqian—could not hesitate. Every step I had taken, every lesson, every drop of spirit energy cultivated since my rebirth, had led to this. For the sake of my family, my city, all of humanity's hope, I could not flinch.

I shot into the air on a column of wind, heart pounding. The dragon's shadow fell over me, swallowing the world.

Not today. Not ever. I am Ye Caiqian.

"Evacuate the north quarter!" I screamed, amplifying my voice with spirit energy until it echoed like thunder through the city's streets. "Third-realm evolvers—hold the wall! All civilians, move south, now!"

My brothers, Ye Xuan and Ye Rong, were already sprinting toward the smoke and flame. Ye Xuan conjured a storm of wind to shepherd the fleeing crowds, lifting burning debris out of their way. Ye Rong stood by the river, summoning torrents of water to douse flames and cool the panicked masses.

The city's best—our fire, earth, water, and air evolvers—answered my call, assembling atop the battered north rampart, faces streaked with ash and fear. My family, my friends, and every dream for the future stood behind me.

Above, the Fire Dragon drew closer, its jaws yawning wide. The air warped with heat. A single beat of its wings sent a shockwave racing across the plain, flattening trees and upending entire houses.

Its first breath was annihilation—a beam of pure fire, white-hot and blinding, lanced down at the city's heart. I drew deep on earth and water, raising a barrier of stone and liquid ice. The two elements fused, forming a glistening wall between dragon and city.

The dragonfire struck. The world exploded in light. My shield groaned and cracked under the fury, spirit energy pouring from me like blood from a wound.

For a heartbeat, I thought the world might end.

But my barrier held.

Behind me, the last civilians sprinted into the southern streets, carried by hope and terror alike.

Tie Lao, battered but unbowed, bellowed above the din, "Ye Caiqian, we have to push it back! If it gets closer, we lose everything!"

My arms shook with exhaustion, but my spirit burned bright. "Wait for my signal," I gasped, calling fire and wind into my hands. The world shrank until only the dragon and I existed—two forces locked in ancient enmity.

"NOW!"

I shot forward, channeling the momentum of my wind, flame swirling in my fists. With a twist, I hurled a compressed spear of fire straight at the Fire Dragon's armored chest.

The blast was thunder and sunlight together. For a moment, I dared to hope—

But as the smoke cleared, I saw only the dragon's smug, mocking eyes.

Its voice crashed down like falling mountains. "Is that all, little human? You kill my lords and raise your walls, but I am the Fire Sovereign! Prepare to burn!"

The Fire Dragon dove, claws scything through the north wall like it was made of sand. Stone exploded, defenders flew through the air like ragdolls. In the chaos, I saw a squad of young elementalists caught by falling rubble. A girl, barely older than twelve, was trapped, smoke coiling around her.

I landed hard, pain flaring in my ankle, and with a surge of earth power, lifted the broken masonry. Air swept the smoke aside. I seized her hand and dragged her free. "Run!" I said, barely recognizing my own voice. "Stay low—get to the south gate!"

She nodded, eyes wide with terror and awe.

All around me, the Fire Dragon's power reigned unchecked:

Earth evolvers raised walls only for the dragon to smash them flat with a flick of its tail.

Water users summoned rain, turning fire to steam, but the flames simply rose higher.

Air users scattered smoke and carried orders, their courage the only thing keeping panic from turning to chaos.

The dragon lashed its tail, shattering a line of houses. Its wings beat hurricanes, sending archers tumbling from the walls.

My heart pounded. Every sense screamed at me to run, but I forced myself to stand tall. The spirit energy inside the dragon was ancient, bottomless—a storm I could barely fathom. But I was Ye Caiqian. I would not yield.

I need more than brute force. I need strategy. Combinations. Everything I've learned…

I leapt onto the ruined edge of a burning house, channeled water and earth together, and forged spears of mud and stone. I hurled them at the dragon's left wing joint, aiming for the chink between scales.

The impact left a wound—molten gold spattered on the earth, and the dragon's hiss shook the air. But the wound closed as quickly as it opened, cauterized by the beast's living flame.

The dragon's molten gaze locked on me. "Impressive. But still a child's trick."

Its next attack was a wave of fire, so hot it burned the very air. I pulled earth and water together to raise a shield, but the flames licked past, burning my sleeves, searing my skin. I gritted my teeth and forced myself not to scream.

Behind me, healers gathered around the wounded, water and spirit energy knitting flesh and cooling burns.

"Ye Caiqian!" Ye Rong shouted, pointing upward.

The Fire Dragon arched its back, wings casting the entire city into shadow. It inhaled, pulling all the heat and air into its vast lungs. If it breathes now, the city's heart will be erased…

I reached into the depths of my spirit, drawing on every drop of wind, water, earth, and fire. With a wordless cry, I wove them together into a swirling dome above the market square, a barrier of every element.

The dragon's breath rained down, a river of sun-bright flame. My shield held—for a heartbeat, for two. Cracks spiderwebbed through the weave. The air itself seemed to catch fire. I screamed, forcing everything I was into the barrier.

Behind me, I saw faces—family, friends, every dream I'd ever dared.

Not today. Not ever.

The barrier shattered. The force hurled me backward, smashing me into the ground. Agony blossomed through every limb. For a moment, I could not breathe.

But I lived. I forced myself to stand, blood running from my nose, vision blurry. Above, the dragon circled, looking for its next prey.

The Fire Dragon landed, claws plowing through the ruins of the north gate, tail lashing. Its voice, ancient and terrible, rang out:

"You persist, little king. But even ants must burn. Will you stand alone, then, and see your city die?"

I forced myself upright, surrounded by those who remained—my brothers, Tie Lao, Lian, Hu Shan, battered but unyielding. They ringed me, shoulders squared, faces lit by the flames.

I summoned a ragged grin. "You'll find we're hard to burn, dragon. We stand together."

Tie Lao barked a laugh, wiping blood from her cheek. "What's the plan, Ye Caiqian?"

I closed my eyes, reaching out with my spirit sense to every soul in the city—cultivators, healers, even children armed with nothing but hope.

"We draw the dragon's fire. We protect the city. I'll buy you time—hold nothing back."

Ye Xuan gripped my arm, voice rough. "Come back, Ye Caiqian."

I tried to laugh. "I plan to. Eventually."

The dragon's roar split the sky, a call to doom and destiny both. I soared up on a cyclone of wind, flames burning in my fists.

The true battle was only beginning.
