Chapter 94 - 94

But before John could stand to leave, Ra's couldn't help himself. The boy's lack of ego was unsettling. "Are you not frustrated? Annoyed?" he asked, his voice probing. "To be used as a catalyst for others? To be anchored to a training hall instead of seeking your own glory?"

John, whose mind was already busy calculating the best way to spend a fortune that was about to overflow his pockets, looked up at Ra's. A look of genuine, blink-and you'll miss it confusion washed over his face. To him, the trade was simple, a little bit of mental energy for assets he needs for his goals.

"Why would I be annoyed?" John asked plainly.

Ra's, seeing the blank confusion in John's eyes, pressed further. He couldn't wrap his head around such a pragmatic spirit in a warrior of John's caliber. "In our exchange just now, I never once went on the offensive. I only defended. As a Grandmaster, does that not insult you? To have your mantle tested by an opponent who never truly took you seriously?"

"No," was John's immediate, clipped answer.

Feeling the answer might come across as disrespectful and potentially jeopardize his newfound salary, John added a bit more weight to his words. "I never harbored the delusion that I could defeat you, Demon Head. My only goal was to pass your assessment. I have done so. The rest is irrelevant."

Ra's stared at him for a long, silent moment, searching for a spark of pride, a flicker of ego, or even a hidden resentment. He found nothing but the cold, steady calm of a man who had just clocked out of a shift. Finally, he gave a weary, dismissing wave of his hand.

"You may leave."

John stood, offered a crisp, respectful bow, and turned on his heel. He didn't linger. His mind was already miles away, likely cataloging the premium cuts of steak he was going to buy for Dog with his first week's pay.

The moment the sliding doors clicked shut behind him, a hidden panel in the far wall glided open. Sensei stepped into the light, his expression unreadable as he looked at his disappointed son.

Ra's sighed, the weight of his centuries seeming to settle more heavily on his shoulders. He didn't turn around to face his father. "It is such a waste," Ra's murmured, his voice tinged with a rare bitterness. "Such immense talent, such a disciplined mind. And yet... he is tethered to nothing. Sadly, he can never be what I hoped he would be."

Sensei nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on the door where John had recently vanished. "It seems you have finally accepted the most efficient way to utilize him."

Ra's turned to face his father "I previously refused to admit your assessment of the boy," he admitted, his voice low. "But seeing how he remains unchanged, even with the immense strength and power he now wields... it is unsettling. He has no apparent goal, no grand ambition on the horizon. He carries strength and gift unknown to many and the spirit of a clerk."

"Even his new status and the respect of the League seem to have caused no ripple in his composure," Ra's continued, a hint of grudging respect in his tone. "I had to accept the reality of his nature."

He paced the length of the balcony, his silk robe trailing behind him. "The boy does not disobey orders. Rather than searching for a grand passion to hold over him, something to tie him down or make him easier to manipulate, it is far more effective to weaponize the very flaw that makes him predictable."

Sensei gave a knowing nod. "Stability," he said, the word hanging in the air. "Stability is the boy's greatest weakness. Because he craves a life without chaos, he avoids anything that threatens that equilibrium, be it the pursuit of absolute power, the distractions of women, or the heat of ego. This, in turn, makes him the perfect soldier. For John, disobeying an order is not a matter of rebellion, it is a threat to the stable world he has built for himself. He will serve us simply because it is the safest path to the quiet life he desires."

Sensei's gaze lingered on the empty doorway, a subtle, calculating glint in his eyes. "Does the boy remind you of Bruce?"

At the mention of the Detective's name, Ra's momentarily stiffened, his posture turning rigid before he slowly shook his head. "There are similarities in their discipline, yes. But unlike Bruce, the boy has no anchors. Bruce is tethered to Gotham, to Talia, to Damian who is still unknown to him. His heart is a map of vulnerabilities that I have ways to navigate."

Ra's let out a dry, mocking chuckle that lacked any real mirth. "I once thought the Detective was flawed because he cared too much for too many things. I called him weak for his sentiment. But now, staring at a man who cares for almost nothing... I find I cannot bring myself to let such a vacuum succeed me. A king must have a kingdom he loves, or at least one he hates. This boy simply wants to be left in peace."

Sensei said nothing, his expression as unreadable as he began to walk toward the same door John had exited through, his footsteps light and rhythmic.

Just before his figure disappeared into the shadows of the corridor, he paused, casting one last thought over his shoulder. "The boy showed a remarkably singular interest in money. I find myself wondering... for a man who claims to want so little, why does he suddenly crave so much?"

With that final thought, Sensei vanished into the gloom, leaving Ra's al Ghul alone with his reflections. Ra's eyes narrowed as he stared at the spot where his father had disappeared. "The old man still understands him too well," he murmured to the empty air.

Despite his voiced disappointments, Ra's had not truly given up on the boy. Assigning John to the High Instructor position was a calculated move, a velvet trap designed to entice him with the one thing he claimed not to want, power.

The role was far more complex than a simple teaching job. By placing John at the head of the Academy, Ra's was granting him direct access to the League's lifeblood. Being an instructor meant John would wield immense influence over every recruit, he would become the face of their strength, the master they looked up to with religious fervor. Ra's wanted to see if, once the crown of leadership was placed upon his head, could John truly resist the urge to rule.

To sharpen the pressure, Ra's planned to have even the veteran assassins, the League's established powerhouses attend John's classes. It was a trial by fire. He wanted to see if John would shrink back or rise to command those who were once his seniors.

The truth also was, Ra's felt a deep-seated disgust for the current state of the League's rank and file. For his grand vision of a purged and remade world, the blades he wielded needed to be of a higher caliber than the blunt instruments currently at his disposal. John was the whetstone. If the boy could provide the assets Ra's required, he would be worth every cent of his exorbitant salary and perhaps, in time, he would finally find an ambition worthy of his blood.
