Chapter 9 - I Hate This Damn Reincarnation (4)

Accompanied by Lucas, I returned to the cell.

I had no choice but to wait for another chance to check for a secret passage.

(So, the gray-haired guy's name is Lucas? At least, I learned his name.)

"Hmm…"

I stared intently at the ceiling.

"Hmmm…"

(It's time to sleep…)

Realizing I couldn't do anything today, I turned on my side and fell asleep.

Time passed, and morning came again.

"Ugh…"

I groaned as I sat up on the bed. How did I sleep? It felt like a herd of elephants ran over me.

"My body hurts, ugh…"

Stretching, a new day began.

Surprisingly, today the world didn't end. The sun rose, and people kept living.

There were no unicorns or other strange things, despite this being another world.

Ah, and of course, I was still sane!

Besides the problems of escaping, my illiteracy, and the thought that my past life was far behind me along with a fancy car and other comforts that still weighed over me, everything was fine.

Reincarnation into the body of a dead person wasn't uncommon in fantasy novels. In the stories I read, it often described not taking over a healthy body, but reincarnating into the body of someone destined to die, or possessing an already dead person and then becoming a child. So this type of possession was the most common.

But no matter how I thought about it, reincarnation into a prisoner?

(What for, my life never prepared me for this…)

(I guess I'm starting to believe in karma…)

Every time I thought about it, it pissed me off.

Holding back from cursing these damn circumstances, I pressed my lips together.

Walking into the prison's common room, where most noble prisoners rested, I wanted to sit on a free couch.

(I can't even read anything because of my illiteracy.)

"C…"

Crossing my arms across my chest in annoyance, I noticed a familiar guard.

(This isn't Lucas, but that's even better.)

"Rodger, how's it going with your wife?" — I approached, pulling a sly grin.

If I had a choice, I wouldn't ask for help so as not to attract attention, but…

I had no choice.

Grinning.

(Why are you still silent? Aren't we on good terms?)

"Oh, it's you, Rosie? Glad to see you. I did as you said, and she really forgave me!"

"I'm glad to help. How have you been? Looks like something's bothering you again lately…"

"Oh, can you tell? Actually, blah blah…"

"Oh my God, really, that's such a pity…"

Slowly talking, the familiar guard relaxed.

Despite his kindness toward me, I still needed to stay alert.

My reputation as the "crazy noblewoman" was well known among the prisoners, but it seemed most guards had seen too many people and weren't very afraid of it.

"Rodger, can only guards enter the dungeon?"

"Huh...? Why are you asking me that?"

For a second, distracted from his problems, he looked at me surprised.

"I've always wondered what's down there. I'll probably have to stay here a long time to save my family's reputation, so I'd like to check it out."

(Let's press the pity button a little…) Honestly, I didn't know anything about this body except that I was a noblewoman and my family, like most nobles here, was the scapegoat, and my name was Rosalyn — that was all.

"You don't want to…?"

"What a pity, I wanted to order those cigarettes you mentioned last time…" — I dramatically wiped a tear.

"The ones? You can really get them?"

Grinning.

"Of course!"

(Now, let's season it with a lie!) Most noble prisoners here, although they didn't love their families for being scapegoats, still maintained ties and wrote letters about what they wanted to receive.

It could be anything, from hairpins to cigarettes and expensive wine.

Of course, such privileges were only for nobles.

Ordinary criminals had no perks at all.

(Corruption exists wherever there are people. Isn't it wonderful?)

"Well… alright then. Ha…." — he sighed and finally agreed.

---

And so I managed to get inside.

I smiled nicely, looking at the small bunch of keys in my left hand, then shifted my gaze to the dim lantern in my right.

First, I needed to at least learn how to navigate here. It would be very funny if before escaping I simply got lost…

(It's time to prepare to leave, right?) It was late as usual, so my quiet night walk had to remain a secret.

"Let's see… turn left?"

I looked at the crumpled piece of paper with a still doubtful escape plan.

To find the escape plan in the library and blindly go check it out — what, is that senile dementia?

"Ha…" I sighed and ruffled my hair.

"Well, there's no other plan yet. Besides, you don't check, you don't know, right?"

With this thought, I turned the corner, hoping that this time I'd be luckier and actually find the right way.

Some time later

(Yeah, what the hell is wrong with this prison?! I feel like I'm going in circles.)

Turning off my lantern, I snorted irritably.

The most annoying thing was that I even had to avoid guards who had already changed positions, even though I wanted to finish before they came.

(Maybe I really am going senile?...)
