"I–" Carl started as the door swung open. He didn't even know what he should say first. An apology? Ask where Ryan was? A plea? His throat felt tight, and every word that he had thought of vanished the moment the door opened.
Alex raised his brow as he leaned against the wall. His posture was still defensive and ready to strike. "How may I help you?"
The cats recognized his voice from that single word and soon appeared, falling over themselves as they raced to the door. Their loud, excited meows helped soothe his heart somewhat. Even Adalia, who was usually more reserved, also joined Jasmine in climbing up his pant legs.
Carl leaned down and picked them up, cradling both in his arms. Jasmine immediately began purring, rubbing her head against his chin, while Adalia settled on his shoulder as if ready to sleep.
