Chapter 19 - A Shortcut to Betrayal

"You still seem distracted," Felicity said, her honeyed voice cutting through my thoughts as we walked along the edge of the night market.

I'd barely spoken since we returned from the altar in the forest, my mind spinning with the strange whispers and the way Felicity had appeared so suddenly, asking those pointed questions about the symbols.

"I'm just tired," I lied, forcing a small smile. "It's been an eventful evening."

The market was beginning to wind down now. Vendors were packing away their unsold wares, and the crowds had thinned considerably. The festive atmosphere had dimmed along with some of the lanterns.

Felicity checked her watch and frowned. "It's getting late. We should head back to the Alpha's house soon."

I nodded, relieved at the suggestion. I wanted nothing more than to return to my room and sort through everything that had happened. Perhaps in the quiet solitude, I could make sense of the whispers, the raven, the glowing symbols.
