Chapter 55

Professor Lee Chan-ho, having finished his lessons with Soo-hyun, Jooyoung, Jinhee, and Junwoo, arrived at his office after ten at night, dragging his tired body.

'Phew!'

He wanted to collapse on the sofa, but there was a guest. Kim Eun-joo was sitting there, flipping through some documents. The professor, seeing her, smiled despite his tired face.

"You're late."

"I wanted to talk to you about Soo-hyun's academic guidance. But you look very tired. Should I come back next time?"

The professor sat on the sofa.

"No. It must have been a long way to get here. Let's talk, please."

His eyes were heavy, and the dark circles under them were quite pronounced. Kim Eun-joo looked at his face and asked,

"I see you have some concerns."

Professor Lee Chan-ho let out a long sigh.

"Honestly, I've lost my confidence. I don't know what to teach Soo-hyun or how."

"…"

'I heard he was a genius. But was he really such a brilliant child that even an experienced professor couldn't teach him?'

Lee Chan-ho pointed to a piece of paper sticking out of Kim Eun-joo's notebook.

"Did you say that was the picture of the house Soo-hyun drew?"

Kim Eun-joo showed him the drawing.

"That's right."

"Teacher, you said that house was where Soo-hyun lived when he disappeared, is that correct?"

"I'm not sure, but it seems to be the most reasonable assumption."

"Okay, let's see."

The professor looked at the drawing.

'Even to me, it doesn't seem like an imaginary house.'

He murmured as he touched the drawing,

"Who could have lived in this house? Who could have raised Soo-hyun like this?"

Kim Eun-joo replied, adjusting her glasses.

"I saw the interview Ms. Kim Ji-ye conducted. She said it was a place with no television or toys. As seen in the drawing, the only toys the boy had were three pianos. Isn't that why Soo-hyun is who he is today?"

The professor burst out laughing.

"Teacher, if a child could be turned into a genius just by putting a piano in a room, all parents would have raised their children in a prison with only a piano. You undoubtedly need a good teacher. All the geniuses we know have had them."

Kim Eun-joo nodded.

"I admit that."

Lee Chan-ho smiled at her and looked at the drawing again, touching the window where the bed and the sofa armrest were visible.

"Inside this place must have been Soo-hyun's teacher. The greatest teacher the world doesn't know."

"Has Soo-hyun ever said anything about his teacher?"

The professor thought for a moment.

"He told Professor Lech in Warsaw that his teachers were Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt."

"...Yes?"

"It's not surprising," the professor said with a smile. "He probably means a master of the mind, like how philosophers consider Nietzsche their master. Chopin and Liszt are masters of my mind too."

Kim Eun-joo nodded. It was a plausible answer.

"What else?"

"He just called them 'uncles'."

"It wasn't just one person?"

"I believe so. There must have been two men who raised Soo-hyun."

"I'll take a note. Thank you for the information."

Professor Lee Chan-ho sighed again. Kim Eun-joo noticed.

"Do you have other concerns besides work?"

"Haha, that's right. It's just a children's issue."

"If it's about children, perhaps I can help."

The professor spoke quickly.

"There are four boys in the piano department. Among them, Junwoo is very competitive. Today he asked me what Soo-hyun was studying. When I told him Beethoven, he threw away the Bach music he had brought and asked me to teach him Beethoven."

"Isn't that normal?"

"I've been teaching for a long time," the professor shook his head. "You can tell from a child's gaze. It was clearly jealousy. It's difficult to take care of Junwoo on top of my existing difficulties."

Kim Eun-joo smiled brightly.

"That's a simple problem. The way to get rid of jealousy is simple."

"What is it?"

"You just have to make the other person understand that they are not the object of your jealousy. Either they are too inferior to be your opponent, or they are too superior to reach. For Junwoo, is Soo-hyun the former or the latter?"

'Junwoo has placed in the top three in eight national competitions. He's been called a genius since he was a child. But competing with Soo-hyun? I suppose it's the latter. But it could be traumatic for the child.'

Kim Eun-joo said, snapping her fingers.

"There is a family with two dogs. They just growl at each other. What should we do?"

"Well, shouldn't we raise them separately so they don't get hurt?"

"No, the parents should step back and let the two dogs fight until they bleed."

"…?"

"Then the hierarchy is established. And the two don't fight again."

"Children are not puppies!" the professor suddenly got angry. "Junwoo! How do you think he would feel having to bow his head after losing? Would you say something like that if Junwoo were your own son?"

Kim Eun-joo said with a blank face.

"There is only one leader in the pack. But that doesn't last forever. Those who recognize it and retreat sharpen their knives behind his back. Whenever he feels weak, he bites and tries to become the leader. That will be the strength that will sustain Junwoo. He will try harder to reach Soo-hyun."

The professor was convinced, but he hesitated.

"What should I do?"

"Let them be. Whether they fight or become friends, there will be a result."

Professor Lee Chan-ho thought for a moment and then nodded.

"Thank you for the advice."

"Soo-hyun said you came for work, right?" he asked.

"Yes, for the curriculum order. Ji-ye said that Soo-hyun can't ride the subway."

"Yes, that's right. He lost his parents in a train accident."

Kim Eun-joo held out a piece of paper.

"When learning about emotions, we start with the emotions that humans are most likely to feel. Fear and anger."

The professor's impression hardened.

"Are these the two emotions you're teaching Soo-hyun first? For a child who has been through such things?"

'This is ridiculous. Why is this happening?'

Kim Eun-joo said with a serious face.

"I understand the professor's desire to lead children to a happy and cheerful life."

"Aren't you?"

"Me too."

"But why are you doing this?"

"Are you going to make your son a happy and cheerful fool?"

The professor was speechless. Kim Eun-joo looked him in the eye.

"Human emotions are complex. But these two emotions are very clear. They are simple, and they are the most explosive and powerful. So I'm going to start with these two."

The professor just sighed and looked at the ceiling.

"Bee-bee-thoven?"

Beethoven, with his red face and messy white hair, looked at Soo-hyun's mouth. He nodded, and then showed him the notes he had scribbled in his notebook again.

"I was wondering what kind of person you were. They wouldn't stop talking about you."

Then, his expression suddenly changed.

'Huh? That's no reason to be angry, so why do you have that expression?'

Beethoven threw down the note and ran off somewhere.

'That looks like a bathroom. I guess he just frowned because his stomach hurt.'

Soo-hyun turned his head again and looked at the growing saplings. When Beethoven came back, he sat on the piano stool and started writing again while looking at Soo-hyun. As the other person couldn't hear, they had no choice but to communicate in writing. Beethoven showed him what he had written:

"There are many trees growing. Thousands of them are growing right now. However, few become zelkovas and enter the Pianist's Village. Most grow and are covered by other trees."

'Zelkova? The Pianist's Village? What is that?'

Soo-hyun and Beethoven exchanged notes.

'What is the Pianist's Village?''You don't even know where you are? Is this also where Uncle Franz and Uncle Frederick live?'"Of course. Aren't those trees over there?"

Soo-hyun turned his head.

'The tree that Uncle Frederick dug up to the roots. Is it yours? So, what kind of tree is Uncle Franz's? And whose is the sapling growing next to it?'

Beethoven came to talk to me again.

"When I see you, I think of an unlucky guy."

The face of a grumpy, stubborn old man. Very different from the other two old men. Soo-hyun replied.

'What kind of person is he?'

Judging by the way he was writing, pressing hard with the fountain pen, he must be writing the name of someone he really didn't like. And when Beethoven threw the note, Soo-hyun was surprised to see what was written there.

"Damn Mozart. The child genius who ruined my life."

'What do you mean? Wasn't Mozart… your teacher?'
