It had long since ceased to have anything to do with Gaspar's demands, or even the lingering grudge over the ear Ryan had taken at the theater. Romero wasn't working toward a confession or submission anymore; he was indulging a grotesque, sadistic pleasure that seemed to feed on every tremor and ragged breath the boy had left.
