Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Jasper kept his jog light to maintain stamina. The last thing he wanted to do was show up to the deadly battle out of breath. This was about to be a large scale battle involving hundreds of spirit tamers, and potentially thousands of spirits.

A tier 4 spirit tear meant the strongest spirit there would be a powerful Beast. One Beast spirit can wipe a small town off the map, or cause mass destruction in large towns before it gets killed by spirit tamers. That is only in places that have a low density of elite spirit tamers. Just throwing a bunch of low tier spirit tamers at it would be fruitless. Jasper didn't even wanna get close enough to see it.

Then, there'd be 20-50 Core spirits. He predicted the group he traveled with to be Core level tamers. They probably all had at least 3 Core spirits along with many Ethereal. Then, there'd be a huge horde of Ethereal, Chrysalis and Pygmy spirits that will spread out over the wild.

Most of the stronger ones would get caught up fighting higher tier spirit tamers. Jasper just had to sit on the edges and hunt down Pygmy spirits that slip through the cracks. His thoughts began to sharpen as he could hear the distant sounds of battle. He could see people across fields running in the same direction as them. Spirit tamers converged on all sides.

His spirit had fully healed by now and was ready for battle. It looked like the core it had consumed earlier was helpful. Jasper communicated with it in his head. 'This is our moment to make serious progress. Try and grab as many spirit cores as you can.' He wanted to say more but he didn't even know what to expect yet.

The rest of the group had faded out of view now and he was left with the spirits West had assigned to guard him. Jasper was quite grateful but worried for West slightly. Spirit tamers can only simultaneously summon as many spirits as they can mentally handle. The average spirit tamer can keep 3 out at the same time.

This was quite a large battle and Weston would likely need everything he can get. Jasper could tell the spirits next to him were Core spirits. This meant they were significantly stronger than that monkey that almost killed him.

Jasper finally saw the edges of the battle as he saw spirit tamers locked into battles with spirits. Jasper looked if anyone needed help. A Chrysalis spirit threw a woman to the side as it charged down on her spirit. The spirit was also Chrysalis and withstood a blast of earth energy.

The women stood and held her wrist as if injured. She stepped back and avoided a long earthlike tentacle. Her spirit, a levitating water turtle, shot forward. It's beak slammed into the earth spirits neck as it tried to break its dirt like skin.

The earthen spirit was some sort of octopus looking tentacle thing. It's long heavy limbs smashed the turtle over the head knocking it from its body. The turtle had already been damaged before started Jasper watching. He sprinted now as he gained speed.

His spirit appeared on his shoulder. As he ran toward the fight the hedgehog suddenly started shaking. Its body turned harder and stone like as it curled into a ball. The spikes were now stone and gouged into the ground as the spirit shot off.

It carved a path in the ground as the sharp, deadly ball smashed into the side of the Chrysalis spirit. It screeched in horrid pain as the hedgehog refused to stop spinning. It pinned the creature to the ground beneath it and rolled continuously on top of it.

Spirit energy flew in the air as the Core spirit turned up the power. Brown and orange energy flashed as the weaker spirit was shredded into hundreds of pieces. Jasper was wide eyed at the scene of power. Jasper would've been turned to meat paste within the second he was hit.

He glanced to the women who seemed stunned as well. It seemed only her wrist was injured so Jasper shot deeper into the battlezone. His eyes scanned the plains in front of him for any frenzying spirit not already locked in battle.

He saw a small elf-like creature. It ran on two legs and had fiery shoulders. Its face was fairylike and very delicate. Its nose was upturned cutely and was rosy. It's skin was smooth and porcelain like. It ran wildly as it crossed the field. Its arms pumped at its side as its mouth opened.

Jasper changed his direction slightly and pushed his legs to run faster. It looked as though it was gonna join in a battle between a Pygmy spirit and spirit tamer. Suddenly, a loud screeching from a bird above caught Jasper's eye.

His face dropped as he saw its massive wing span and impossibly bright feathers. It was a Core light spirit. It's massive sail sized wings beat above as orbs of light energy condensed in front of it. It flapped its wings intensely, and sent the orbs striking toward Jasper. Before Jasper could even percieve what was happening a massive wave of heat rolled over him.

His face was bathed in hot air as a huge flame rolled out of the scorpions tail. The energy projectiles exploded as the two attacks canceled eachother out. Jasper looked behind him wide eyed. The scorpion was pulsing with fire energy.

Its carapace expanded as it glowed brighter. It's heat suddenly was pushed out from its body causing a huge cloud of steam to burst out from the scorpion. The bird's vision was obscured. Jaspers face flapped in the wave of steam. He sprinted through the steam toward his target.

He'd only get in the way of these powerful beasts. His body was so damn hot. He had to get out of this steam cloud. Finally, he burst through the steam, his body steaming as well. As he ran the air slowly cooled him down.

He glanced back in time to see the steam fading. The hedgehog was balled up and slammed into the ground. From the earth around it, spikes of stone shot into the air. The bird quickly avoided the spikes with careful movements. Its wings were spread wide again as light energy condensed on its skin. It flashed brightly, temporarily blinding anyone looking in its direction. Jasper had realized what was happening and turned his head forward in time to only get the edges of his vision fried.

He rubbed his eyes as he ran toward the little elf spirit. It noticed Jasper and turned to run toward him. He smirked as he pulled his spear and shield from his back. The caterpillar readied itself on his shoulder as his spear swung toward the creature. Jasper had been planning a new fight style with his spirit that would require precise communication.

They could communicate via their spiritual connection. He realized that he moved faster than his spirit, so he could be the speed that gives his spirit a good way to jump from him. It's jump was surprisingly fast and accurate. The creature brought its flame covered fist up and deflected the spearhead. Jasper backpedaled as he readjusted his grip for a thrust.

Before he could attack, the spirits red glowing fist shot forward leaving a flaming fist projectile that traveled quickly. Jaspers head moved to the side just in time as his eyes tracked the small fireball. Flames licked the side of his face as it flew by. Jasper face hardened as the spear smashed into the creatures head.

Stunned, it swung another fist at Jaspers knee. Jasper pulled his leg up and brought it down on the creatures shoulder. Its eyes shook as it stumbled backward. Now the caterpillar leaped off of his shoulder and sunk its mandibles into the creatures shoulder.

It quickly dislodged itself and jumped back onto Jaspers shoulder. Jasper shot forward his spear carving through the air. It shrieked and ducked under the blade. It leaped at Jasper its fists flaming with energy. Jaspers leg shot up and slammed into it's side. It was able to block some of the attack with a flaming fist. But it ended up skidding across the ground as Jaspers strength overpowered the spirit.

Jasper hissed in pain as he felt the burns on his leg. They were probably second degree burns and would only hurt. He still had a lot of fighting to do. He shouldn't hurt himself when he could've made a different move. Jasper leaped, his spear poised to skewer the spirit. It rolled to the side and narrowly avoided the strike.

Just then the caterpillar jumped forward again. Its mandibles sunk into the same wound. Its skin had already began to turn black from the initial bite. With more necrotic energy being injected, the wound festered. This forced the spirit to either focus on fighting the necrotic energy with their spirit energy, or using it to strengthen themselves in combat.

The caterpillar wrestled with the spirit for a moment before jumping away. The second it hopped away Jaspers spear was slashing down on the spirit. It raised a fist and shrieked in rage. It's body began glowing brightly as fire energy condensed in it. Jasper quickly ran backward and beckoned his spirit to jump to him. The caterpillar landed on his shoulder as he was pushed back by a mini heatwave.

His arms shielded his face as the creature turned into a small sun. It slowly began losing intensity as it was running out of energy. It stumbled as the fire energy dissipated slightly. Jasper had considered trying to tame this spirit because of how it looked. It was a funky looking little guy.

It wasn't often that humanoid spirits popped up. Of course he'd be at a major disadvantage because of the affinity difference. But he could push it. There were people who specialized in taming anything. They reject the prospect that one should only focus on their affinity.

Jasper suspected Weston was one of those people from his differing spirits. There was a skill to taming, but the first thing he had to do was get close enough to touch the spirit. His feet shuffled as he ducked under a fire projectile. His spear glanced off of its fist and into the dirt. It leaped at him again, its fists poised to strik Jasper.

Jasper grit his teeth as his shoulder powered his arm forward. The edge of his shield smashed into the creatures face damaging it heavily. It was thrown back a few feet and landed on its back. It's eyed were squeezed shut as it rubbed its damaged face.

Jasper's hand reached out and was placed on the spirits forehead. Time slowed as his spirit reached out to the creature. Inside his spirit, colors exploded as the two spirits clashed. This meant the spirit did not easily assimilate, and instead chose to keep fighting.

Jasper could try and overpower it with his spirit, but that's how one could possibly recieve spirit damage in return. If he was damaged that bad right now he'd be weakened for the rest of the battle. He still wanted to take down more spirits.

He removed his hand from the spirits head and brought the edge of his shield down. The first one stunned it more, the second made its eyes lose focus, and the third ended its life.
