Chapter 8 - The Next Day

"The Siege of Itzá Ruins in 1587, the country Beal and Mirianea fought against Ryarca, for the world's largest supply of Aether, resulting in the biggest disaster. City's were layed to waste, homes were burned down, nothing but destruction.

The biggest disaster left the capital of Beal and any city in its path after the destruction of the Ruin, it was nothing but fires and rumbles, and many lives were lost."

"It was a territorial dispute and the Ruin wasn't evaluated, Federica." Maverick said sitting down check his laptop reading off a article. "You have to fact-check the articles, or you're taking a remedial class."

"Tell me again, how did you become my project partner?" Federica said clearly annoyed with his comment.

Maverick whispers to himself, "Maybe because the first thing you did was to see everyone's ability by force."

Cracking her knuckles with a smile, "What was that?"

"Um… Did you know the ruin contains five dragons, and it took your father three days to hunt them all down?"

Federica placed her hand on her chest, looking proud, "I know, he told me the story hundreds of times, and he kept one of the dragon's claws as a trophy."

"You'd better write that down before you forget," Maverick said as he stood up and closed his laptop.

"Where are you going?"

"I have an assignment today." Maverick put on his coat with a wolf patched on the sleeve, a chest plate, and a bow pin on its collar and left the room.

Entering the armory, Maverick walked up to a counter with a bar window. Ringing the bell, a man with a beard enters into view, "How can I help Maverick?"

"I'm going to need my usual loadout, Angel"

"Please present your ID numbers and confirmation."

Waiting for a moment Angel brought out a pouch and a sack. "That's twelve Shock Needles, and thirty Pellets." He grabbed the items and placed them into his coat. Angel gave him a form to sign off.

Maverick's phone began to ring, taking his phone out, he answered. "What do you want, Nancy?"

Nancy answered him coldly, "You have no right to talk to me like that."

"Cool, what do you want?" Maverick said as he left the armory.

Clicking her tongue "Father wants you to come home."

"Well, you can tell him no."

"There is no room for no, or he'll decrease your allowance to only pay for rent."

"Tell him to go ahead, I don't want anything to do with the family business."

"Wait, you ca-" Maverick abruptly ended the call as shack his phone in anger. Looking back at his phone a message read, "I'm here, where are you?"

Leaving the Defensa a limo was parked while the chauffeur was in front of the building. Opening the door, Maverick entered and was welcomed by someone with long shaggy hair and an undone tie. "It has been a while, Maverick."

"Hey, Luke," Maverick said as he took a seat. "So, why did you request me?"

Letting out a slight chuck, "I was just hoping to talk to a friend."

Cracking a smile, "Yeah, sure, I'll help you."

Luke adjusted his tie and brought out the files. "I'll keep it simple. I want to be the next heir of Rover INC." Opening the files, Maverick examined and was amazed by the content. "I know your uncle is already a con artist, but this is on a whole other level."

There were photos of Luke's uncle with Adrian, emails sent that contained important information about buying locations, potential ruin sites, intentional disruption of funds, etc.

"By the looks of it, why do you need my help? You have plenty of evidence-?" Luke gestures to him to be quiet.

Leaning forward, "Because the investigator I hired is in the hospital," Luke said quietly as if they were being watched, "And I fear that the Asesino are involved."

Maverick's face turns pale, and he grabs Luke by the collar, "Why are you telling this? The world's most dangerous assassination group is coming after you."

"Don't worry, we're working on security details for the annual fundraiser tonight, so I was allowed to request you, and if my life is truly in danger, we can take increased measures."

"Using the fundraising as extra security, find then, hand me the details."

Handing over a binder to Maverick, he examined it; Grand Hall, thirty thousand square feet, two hundred guards. They want fifty guards in the main room, another fifty protruding around the building. Thirty guards at the front entrance, and seventy roaming around the perimeter.

Checking the floor plans: two floors, no roof access, four entrances, the south entrance is the main entrance.

"I think you can increase the guards from two hundred to three hundred and put extra security in the back," Maverick said as he handed back the binder to Luke.

"Now I want to disclose something about the main event," Luke whispered into Maverick's ear, leaving him in utter shock.

"Are you serious?"

"Yes, if it gets stolen, it will leave Rover Inc. in ruins. That's why everything has to go smoothly."

Arriving at the Grand Hall, the area was surrounded by a garden, and in the center was a weathered statue of the Silver King, with his sword embedded in the ground. Entering the building, the entrance was almost fully decorated as employees were scrounging for the last of the decorations.

Meeting with the receptionist at the front desk, Luke spoke to them and handed over the binder. Looking through it, the receptionist nodded, "Please follow me."

Following her throughout the Hall as she led them to a theater. Seeing the employees setting up banners and speakers, they walk towards the stage.

"Director, you have guests," she said to a woman standing on the stage as she was testing the microphone. Turning around and jumping off the stage, the Director greeted them.

Handing over the binder, the Director looked through it, adjusting her glasses with a disgusted look," Why are you hiring the private security team from Berkley?" she said while looking at Luke.

"Come on Megan. Berkley has high-quality security."

With fury in her eyes "I don't care, he's nothing more than a shady clown." Throwing the binder back at Luke, a needle was thrown, pinning the binder before hitting his face, and it flew into Maverick's hand. "So, this is the reason why you requested me."

Luke tried to convince but Magen quickly dismissed him. Watching them arguing, Maverick said to the receptionist "Are they always like this?"

"Well, last time he was here, she threw an entire car at him, and that was over a double booking on two different conventions, so pretty much," she said as Megan ripped the chairs out of the ground, throwing them. Taking the pellet out, Maverick flicked them, knocking the chairs away, preventing them from hitting Luke.

Taking a breath, Megan calmed down and placed a chair down, adjusting her glasses. She agreed as long as Luke takes full responsibility for any accidents. With a sigh of relief, Luke wasn't shaken, knowing how Maverick's ability to 'guide' was capable of.

Maverick began to remove the needle from the binder, and the pellet that was flicked, retreated back into his hand. Handing the binder back to Luke.

"I might not trust Berkley, but your judgment on character is something else. If you need me I'll be here until two."

Leaving the theater, Maverick asked what Luke's relationship with Megan was. He reveals that Megan was his fiancée. Taking back, Maverick's head practically explodes with this information trying to process.

"Relax, it was out of convenience."

"Then, why her?"

"Well, both of our parents wanted to arrange a marriage for business purposes, and neither of us wanted that. It was a good thing that both our families are very promising, or else I'd be living on a deserted island."

Entering a room with glass casing, observing them, Maverick was amazed, the room was filled with artifacts. For him they glow in a violet color, some of them glow with intensity and others are dim.

"Judging by your face the appraisers did their jobs well." Luke said as pick up a necklace tossing it to Maverick.

Looking at the necklace, it looks like it was made out of gold with gems ingrained into it, however it was not glowing violet as the other items. Confused Maverick said "This isn't an artifact?"

"Correct, what you are holding there is a genuine antique from the Old Era."

Panicked, Maverick, faced drained of color, quickly gave the antique back to Luke; anything from the Old Era has enough purchasing power to buy an entire city block. Luke was amused with his actions, setting the necklace to the side.

Looking around the room making sure nobody else was here, he even looked at the vent, it was not impossible with one ability they can easily bypass the size requirement to fit into one.

Cleaning his throat Luke once again spoke quietly, "I have reasonable beliefs that Adrian is Ares or connected to him."

Maverick was astonished, making a claim such as that has to be circumstantial at best. The investigation on Ares goes back a month ago, and at most they found his name and the coins that follow, and thanks to Gray the Defensa managed to find the age range and the coin were used for distribution, but based on Maverick knowledge, Adrian was forty-five. Unless the common factor laws were in effect, meaning that either he or another one had the same ability.

"It's possible for him to be Ares, he could be working as the head. He did moved into the city a few months ago." Maverick said as he rested his hand on his chin

"And that is the reason why," Luke said, raising his voice. "I checked the city that he was previously at, and it was concerning"

"What do you mean?"

"Every city he was in, the coins followed."

This revelation was donating, Maverick wondered why he didn't give this information to Tenma, but Luke gave his reasons.

Tenma is the highest ranking Defensa member; Omi rank, first class. The influence he carries with that rank, he is essentially a president of his own country, and not only that he is also regarded as the one of the world strongest. If Adrian was truly a part of Ares, it would no longer be a case of getting out of the city, but the matter of seconds would take for Tenma to find him.

If Luke would have turned the information in, it would allow Tenma to investigate Adrian, but once that happens, Adrian will quickly leave.

"We will need to bring evidence against him, for that we need someone in the inside or a low rank with exceptional ability."
