The mansion was too quiet.
Li Wei stepped through the tall marble doorway, the sound of her heels echoing across floors so polished they reflected the chandeliers. The place looked more like a luxury hotel than a home — cold, spotless, and painfully perfect.
Just like its owner.
Shen Zihan walked ahead without a word, not bothering to look back. His presence filled the space like winter air: sharp, silent, and impossible to ignore.
"You'll be staying in the guest room on the third floor," he said as they reached the grand staircase. "We'll keep up appearances when necessary. Otherwise, stay out of my way."
Li Wei arched a brow. "Not even a welcome drink?"
Zihan turned slightly, giving her a cool smirk. "You're not a guest. You're an investment."
Her heart burned, but she smiled sweetly. "Good. I always get my return."
Later that night
The maid showed her to a spacious bedroom with a private balcony and queen-sized bed. It was luxurious — but it wasn't hers. None of this was.
There were no photos. No warmth. No trace of a life being lived here.
Just expensive emptiness.
She changed into her old pajamas, curled up on the edge of the bed, and stared at the ceiling.
